Religion In Modern Sports Fanaticism: From Classical Antiquity To Online Sports Forums, Matthew Prokopiw
Religion In Modern Sports Fanaticism: From Classical Antiquity To Online Sports Forums, Matthew Prokopiw
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In tracing the concept of religion to its theorization and study by French sociologist Émile Durkheim this dissertation presents concrete and abstract support for a commonly forwarded proposition: fanaticism of the modern spectacle of sports amounts to religiosity, characterized by a social logic of vitality and totemism, notably present as well in the ancient Roman spectacle and Greek agōn. Based in the contemporary theory of French sociologist Michel Maffesoli, following Durkheim and the study of the sacred by Le Collège de Sociologie, this dissertation contributes an immersive and critical investigation into the nascent but encompassing online dimension of fanaticism …

Rugby League As A Televised Product In The United States Of America, Mike Morris
Rugby League As A Televised Product In The United States Of America, Mike Morris
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects
Rugby league is a form of rugby that is more similar to American football than its more globally popular cousin rugby union. This similarity to the United States of America’s most popular sport, that country’s appetite for sport, and its previous acceptance of foreign sports products makes rugby league an attractive product for American media outlets to present and promote.
Rugby league’s history as a working-class sport in England and Australia will appeal to American consumers hungry for grit and authenticity from their favorite athletes and teams. Established coverage of English soccer has paved the way for rugby league media …

Informational And Normative Influences In Youth Sport, Hannah Von Zup
Honors Theses
It is widely accepted that participation in youth sport has abundant benefits. These include improving overall fitness, higher self-esteem, and socialization with others. In a 2014 study on those between the ages of six to 18, 27 million reported participating in team sports, and 60 million reported participating in any form of organized athletics within the United States (DiFiore et al.). Sports are an enormous part of American society and a great pastime for viewers and players alike. Most athletes report starting their sport at an early age, and many adults claim some of their best memories are from their …
Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto
Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Human communication requires the disciplines regarding physical fitness, codified language, and the performing arts to overlap, and exist symbiotically. Within the realm of artistic performance, the three disciplines working together deliver a deliberate message in a way unique to performing artists. The general tendency to compartmentalize sports, communication, and the performing arts into their pigeonhole categories of Kinesiology, Linguistics, and Theatre Arts is impractical, particularly for performing artists simply because all of the disciplines are mutually dependent in the context of all kinesthetic communications.
The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss several concepts and the ways in …

Virtually Invincible: The Impact Of Social Media Presentation On Rock Climbing, Lilly Posner
Virtually Invincible: The Impact Of Social Media Presentation On Rock Climbing, Lilly Posner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rock climbing, a distinguished and culturally relevant ‘extreme’ sport, has experienced a remarkable increase in popularity and media attention. Sparse research has been conducted on the impact of social media presentation and how it may inspire athletes to intensify risks. This element introduces a paradox in the evolving nature of extreme sports that warrants a deeper examination; Can the authenticity of a private, individualized sport be retained in a social space dedicated to public spectacle? By method of documentary and inspired by a descriptive phenomenological approach, this research explores the meanings, motivations and risk perceptions of rock climbers to discover …

Framing Sports’ Corporate Social Responsibility: U.S. Women’S Vs. Men’S Soccer Leagues, Paul Schattschneider
Framing Sports’ Corporate Social Responsibility: U.S. Women’S Vs. Men’S Soccer Leagues, Paul Schattschneider
Honors Program Theses
Professional sports are a rich industry for corporate social responsibility (CSR) research because today’s sports organizations are big businesses that generate shared identities and strong affective connections among fans, teams, and players. Further, today’s professional sports consumers expect organizations to behave in socially responsible ways and to give back to their communities. While nearly every sports organization, like most other major businesses, practices CSR, sports teams are in a unique position because they receive greater media coverage than other businesses. Not all of this coverage is positive, however, as news reports about the controversy over compensation inequities in women’s soccer …

The Cost For Our Entertainment, Jasmine Younger
Communication Senior Capstones
Abstract
Sports hold such a dominant role in our society. They provide entertainment for individuals, job opportunities, and have a great impact on any given communities’ economy. However, we as the consumers and fans of the industry, tend to lack further examinations on the dynamics of the economic roles within sports. We sometimes become caught up in the glory of sports and never truly take the time to examine all of the money that goes into the industry. This paper will illustrate the ways in which the sports industry disburses their funds. From the cost of being a fan, to …
