Hurricane Andrew was the costliest natural disaster to strike the United States, and the strongest hurricane since the 1920s. Andrew permanently changed the landscape by wiping out entire communities and scattering the people who lived in them. At least 20 deaths were directly attributed to the storm. Property damage was calculated into the tens of billions of dollars. We can lessen the impact of such a future event upon people by gaining a greater understanding of the communication patterns that develop among survivors after a hurricane or other natural disaster has passed--particularly, survivors of differing ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Country music has the fastest-growing audience in America but it is still rather scandalous for an intellectual to admit to liking it. Contemporary cultural theory—which is to say cultural studies—has thus had practically nothing to say about it. At first glance, it may seem that everything has already been said. Within the past decade, there has been tremendous growth in the number of businesses and not-for-profit organizations which have become equipped with computers and have empowered workers to use them to communicate. This new form of on-the-job empowerment is known as Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). CMC's use has resulted in greater production and performance in the workplace. It has also resulted in an increased amount of tension observed between management and subordinates.
