The CDC (2013) reported an unparalleled 50 percent increase in HIV infections in young Black MSM from 2003 to 2009. Dense, homogenous sexual networks are believed to be a major contributing factor to unparalleled transmission rates; if so, communication within these networks about HIV status and condom use is essential to fighting this epidemic. Yet there is a dearth of research on how Black gay men communicate about condom use and HIV status. Examinations of discourse are essential for documenting the linguistic variations of a particular culture. In turn, linguistic variations across cultures may suggest similar variations in global discourse measures. It is imperative for clinicians to first understand the framework and cultural norms of a particular dialect or language to properly identify deficits in disordered language. Since the early 1990s, feminist scholars have declared that a post-feminist media culture has arisen throughout the Westernized world to attack the ideas and values promoted by feminists and the second-wave feminist movement that became established in the late 1960s and 70s. In order to meet the academic demands of the school system, school-aged children must be able to understand the language (discourse) of their teachers and the curricular expectations for verbal expression.
