The exposure is non-intrusive, serving as a backdrop to the sports action occurring at the arena. Because it cannot be separated from the action, this communication form is difficult to tune out perceptually.

Newspaper Theft, Self-Preservation And The Dimensions Of Censorship, Erik Ugland, Jennifer L. Lambe Sep 2010

Newspaper Theft, Self-Preservation And The Dimensions Of Censorship, Erik Ugland, Jennifer L. Lambe

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

One of the most common yet understudied means of suppressing free expression on college and university campuses is the theft of freely-distributed student publications, particularly newspapers. This study examines news accounts of nearly 300 newspaper theft incidents at colleges and universities between 1995 and 2008 in order to identify the manifestations and consequences of this peculiar form of censorship, and to augment existing research on censorship and tolerance by looking, not at what people say about free expression, but at what they do when they have the power of censorship in their own hands. Among the key findings is that …

Journalism In Second Life, Bonnie Brennen, Erika Dela Cerna

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Our research seeks to understand the emerging journalism practiced in Second Life—a computer-generated alternative reality. Framed by postmodernism, this study uses an ideological analysis to evaluate the three Second Life newspapers: the Alphaville Herald, the Metaverse Messenger and the Second Life Newspaper. We suggest that journalism in Second Life focuses on community building and education, considers the influence of the on-line world to resident members' off-line lives and raises important questions about freedom of expression.

Symptom Information In Direct-To-Consumer Antidepressant Advertising And College Students' Perception Of The Lifetime Risk Depression, Jin Seong Park, Jean M. Grow

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

While consumers’ health cognition and behavior are likely formed through multiple influences, the current study focused on the effects of exposure to specific content elements in direct-to-consumer advertising. The study revealed that consumers’ exposure to the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) diagnostic guideline has potential to reduce their perceived lifetime risk of depression and intention to consult a health professional to discuss the health issue. The study further revealed when an antidepressant ad mentioned a long list of symptoms, exposure to the diagnostic guideline reduced risk perception and consultation intention significantly, whereas in the presence of a short list of symptoms, …

The World War Ii Patriotic Mother, Ana C. Garner, Karen L. Slattery Apr 2010

The World War Ii Patriotic Mother, Ana C. Garner, Karen L. Slattery

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The archetypal good mother and the archetypal patriotic mother are important symbols in American culture. Both are rooted in maternal work but are separated by two conflicting assumptions. The good mother nurtures her children and protects them from harm, while the patriotic wartime mother remains silent when the government sends her child directly into harm's way. This study explores how the World War II press positioned mothers of soldiers to sacrifice their children in support of the nation's war effort. The findings point to the importance of understanding the role of archetypes in news narratives.

Consumer Ethnocentrism: A Comparison Of Arab And Western Audiences, Kevin Keenan, James Pokrywczynski Jan 2010

Consumer Ethnocentrism: A Comparison Of Arab And Western Audiences, Kevin Keenan, James Pokrywczynski

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The subject of consumer ethnocentrism is discussed in the context of advertising country-of-origin effects. The literature and suggestions concerning the phenomenon in the Middle East are brought up and a study using U.S. and Egyptian samples is described. The findings show some evidence of consumer ethnocentrism in both countries, though statistical significance is only achieved with U.S. data, generally consistent with prior writing and research focused on developed versus developing countries. Special attention is given to the construct of worldliness and though not statistically significant, results suggest it may be a factor deserving additional study.

Getting On The "E" List: E-Mail Use In A Community Of Service Provider, Craig R. Scott, Laurie K. Lewis, Scott C. D'Urso

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This case examines how a community of organizations providing service to people experiencing homelessness made use of an electronic mail list. Current economic conditions have encouraged organizations in various sectors—including nonprofits—that might normally compete for scarce resources to collaborate with one another to increase their chances of survival. One set of tools likely to be of value in such relationships includes various online discussion technologies. An examination of this community’s email list use over a three-year period suggests a somewhat complex picture regarding technology use. More specifically, some issues both constrain and enable use. Additionally, seemingly basic and minimal uses …

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland Jan 2010

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This Article contends that contemporary arguments about the reporter's privilege are increasingly situated within a divided framework in which protections for confidential and nonconfidential information are treated as separate interests that lack a shared theoretical justification. This is both a cause and consequence of a broader tendency among judges, legislators, journalists, and lawyers to emphasize policy-based conceptions of the privilege that are focused on case-specific calculations of harms and benefits, rather than principle-based conceptions focused on journalistic autonomy and the need for a structural separation of press and government. Policy arguments present the privilege as a narrow, utilitarian device for …

Projective Techniques In Us Marketing And Management Research: The Influence Of The Achievement Motive, Lawrence Soley Jan 2010

Projective Techniques In Us Marketing And Management Research: The Influence Of The Achievement Motive, Lawrence Soley

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the use of projective techniques for published marketing and management research in the USA. The paper emphasizes the influence that McClelland, Atkinson, Clark and Lowell’s study, The Achievement Motive (1953), has had on subsequent research. That work applied quantitative analysis to responses obtained using projective techniques.

Design/methodology/approach – The approaches used in this paper consist of descriptive historical methods and a literature review. The historical analysis was conducted using Kuhn’s 1967 conception of paradigms, showing that the paradigm from which projective techniques emerged – psychoanalysis – failed to gather many adherents outside the …

Emerging Interpersonal Norms Of Text Messaging In India And The United States, Robert Shuter, Sumana Chattopadhyay Jan 2010

Emerging Interpersonal Norms Of Text Messaging In India And The United States, Robert Shuter, Sumana Chattopadhyay

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study examines whether there are emerging interpersonal norms of text messaging—an etiquette (“textiquette”) of texting—that guide its use in India and the United States. One hundred and thirty-seven participants recorded multiple text messages sent and received in specially designed text logs. Each log secured data on the following dimensions: (1) the context in which a text was sent and received/read; (2) who each participant was with—and the reaction of this person(s)—when the participant sent or received/read a text message; and (3) what constitutes impolite text messaging behavior. Results reveal emerging interpersonal norms of text messaging in both countries that …
