News media coverage of labor traditionally has been used as a supporting example for Political Economy Theory. It holds that that content production and distribution, and hence the news content itself, is subtly influenced by ownership and control. Certainly one can notice over the past few decades a dramatic decline in the journalistic resources devoted to labor coverage. This has lead some observers to suggest the growing corporate concentration of media ownership correlates with strike coverage that has declined beyond any ratio suggested by the declining power of unions and the reduced number of strikes. This research examined whether U. …

That Is Not Goldfish Swallowing: Newsreels Encounter Protests Against The Vietnam War, Mark D Harmon
That Is Not Goldfish Swallowing: Newsreels Encounter Protests Against The Vietnam War, Mark D Harmon
School of Journalism and Electronic Media Publications and Other Works
Universal Newsreels did not shut down until the end of December 1967, so it had an opportunity to present images and narration about the growing U. S. antiwar movement. British Pathe´ Newsreels lingered longer, not shutting down until 1970. Thus, it was able to cover the rapidly growing U. K. antiwar movement. The researcher explored how these established and establishment media forms (which had not technologically or ideologically adapted as the world changed) handled such protests. A critical viewing of those last newsreels as they encountered antiwar protest validated social movement theory. Mediated resistance spewed forth in many forms, but …

Attribution Theory observes that people have a compelling need to explain things, and those explanations break down into things internal to the self or to an outside force. This article notes how neatly that theory parallels work by Lakoff that conservatives and Republicans take a "stern father" approach to issues, finding individual fault for almost any problem, while Democrats and liberals look to external forces. Mediated portrayals of poverty tend to enforce the former view rather than the latter. Through secondary analyses of many polls, the researcher confirms that political ideology and party align at highly significant levels with how …

Illusions Of Control: Media Uses And Preferences Among University Students, Charles Primm
School of Advertising and Public Relations Publications and Other Works
Uses and gratifications theory and the situational theory of publics are used to frame an analysis of media uses and preferences of university students. Results of a survey of university students (n=202) reveal that students reported different levels of use and preference for e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and text messaging with campus leadership and their own instructors. Students who considered themselves more active in campus issues preferred newspapers, magazines and UT websites to obtain more information about the university. Professional recommendations on maximizing communication effectiveness between universities and their students include using UT websites, text messages and campus and …
