Variations In The Facial Prominence Of A Hollywood Action Heroine: The Case Of Katniss In The Hunger Games, Alexandra M. Mastorides
Variations In The Facial Prominence Of A Hollywood Action Heroine: The Case Of Katniss In The Hunger Games, Alexandra M. Mastorides
Communication
Numerous studies have found that in a variety of media, men are depicted with a greater degree of facial prominence than women. This tendency has earned the name, “the face-‐ism phenomenon.” It is argued to promote sexist notions that enable the objectification of women while simultaneously reinforcing stereotypical gender roles. Greater focus on the face is said to give off stronger impressions of intelligence, dominance, and the personality of an individual. This study measures the face-‐ism of the character Katniss Everdeen over the course of film, The Hunger Games. The results found that compared to other women in previous studies, …

Investigating The World Of Disney’S Heroines: A Close Analysis Of Cinderella And Beauty And The Beast, Victoria Margaret Gurrieri
Communication
This thesis will provide an in- depth analysis of the films Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, drawing principally (though not exclusively) on techniques of film analysis propounded by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson’s Film Art. Bordwell and Thompson provide explanations of the devices that should be used to critique a film. These include repetitions and patterns, visual and aural techniques, and narrative structures, which all serve to enhance the overall film. After examining each film individually, the two films are compared and contrasted. This highlights the progress made by Walt Disney Studios and their filmmakers in the years between …

Journalism Program
For a journalist, there are only a few things that can land you a job. One of those things is having a professional portfolio. That’s why the Journalism Department has its students complete a professional portfolio as part of their Honors program. The Honors Program takes work students have already completed, then asks them to revise it, or even do it again. That way, when we leave the program, we’re ready to start sending out portfolios and resumés to potential employers. My portfolio is dominated by work that I wrote for a print medium because that’s what our program focuses …

Newspaper journalism in the early 21st century is experiencing economic predicaments and a crisis of professional authority, both connected to technological changes of public communication. This is the backdrop of this study of political journalism. It is based on three years of qualitative field research on political press corps in Albany, New York and Munich, Germany, encompassing 72 interviews with reporters (from 31 news organization) and spokespeople (across all political parties and branches of government) as well as about 350 hours of observation. It also draws on professional discourses, including news stories about journalism (meta-journalism), obituaries of journalists as well …
"I'M A Home Health Aide, Not A Home Health Maid" : An Analysis Of How Home Health Aides Talk About And Interpret Their Role, Muriel E. Scott
"I'M A Home Health Aide, Not A Home Health Maid" : An Analysis Of How Home Health Aides Talk About And Interpret Their Role, Muriel E. Scott
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Home health aides are paraprofessionals who are critical to the health and well-being of elderly adults and their ability to continue living in their own homes for as long as possible. However, a crisis is looming because the demand for home health aides is rapidly increasing as America ages. Filling today's need for home health aides is already difficult, and turnover rates are high across the country. The job is physically and emotionally challenging, while financial rewards are severely constrained by public policy and the lack of value placed on the position. Conflicting expectations of home care agency supervisors, clients …
Gender Balanced Or Gender Biased? : An Examination Of News Coverage Of Male And Female Governors, Lauren H. Bryant
Gender Balanced Or Gender Biased? : An Examination Of News Coverage Of Male And Female Governors, Lauren H. Bryant
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Male and female candidates are on an uneven political playing field with women continually disadvantaged in terms of the news media coverage they receive. Research has shown that female candidates receive more negative coverage and coverage based upon traditional gender stereotypes and role expectations of women in our culture. However, what is less clear is the type of news coverage women receive after Election Day. As more and more women are elected, it becomes increasingly important to examine the coverage they receive while in office. This study employed a content analysis to examine the differences in the news coverage of …
Political Criticism And The Power Of Satire : The Transformation Of "Late-Night" Comedy On Television In The United States, 1980-2008, Nickie Michaud Wild
Political Criticism And The Power Of Satire : The Transformation Of "Late-Night" Comedy On Television In The United States, 1980-2008, Nickie Michaud Wild
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
How has political comedy on television in the United States changed over time? Earlier examples of political comedy on television were shows like Saturday Night Live and various late night talk shows, which focused primarily on political or personal scandals or personal characteristics, rather than policies or substantive issues. In other arenas of television and the public sphere in general, there was serious criticism of scandals, but not in political comedy. Shows that attempted to criticize politicians or serious public issues using satire, irony, or invective such as The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, were routinely censored by network executives. With …
