Language Contact And Variation In The Spanish Of Catalonia, Nikoleta Papa

Communication

When taking into consideration the language situation of Spain, it is important to realize that the presence of different languages varies with each region of the country and that the knowledge and status of these languages impact the use of Castilian. Catalonia is one such region in which it is important to understand and be able to recognize the differences in the Spanish language production of bilingual Castilian/Catalan speakers as opposed to monolingual Spanish speakers. The subject matter of this study is the variation in the use of Spanish language in Catalonia. Catalan has been spoken in the history of …

Perceptions Of The “World”, Marybeth Frances Staebell May 2013

Perceptions Of The “World”, Marybeth Frances Staebell

Communication

The overarching question of my research was to discover in which ways adults perceive Walt Disney World, not the Disney brand or Disney movies, but the theme park itself. Much research has been put into discovering what types of “fantasies” or “dreams” the Walt Disney Company has manufactured and subsequently Walt Disney World has stepped in to bring to fruition. However, we have not discovered what it is that others “dream” about who do not buy into the typical Disney fantasies we must look as how it is that adults perceive the park, not just at how children experience it. …

Empirical studies pertaining to media effects on career aspirations have focused particularly on children and junior high school students. However, there is a lack of research focusing on college students and the impacts the media have on their career choices. A Senior’S Anthology, Jason Robert Seligson

Communication

The first piece in my portfolio is a narrative article about the growing phenomenon of Quidditch. I did a lot of preliminary research about the evolution of the game—including how it was adapted from the pages of Harry Potter to an actual college sport. The Quidditch World Cup is an annual event in New York City and has received coverage from mainstream media outlets over the past few years. I have a close friend who plays the sport at Tufts University, which was what first drew me to the topic. I attended a tournament at Hofstra University and interviewed a …

Witnessing The Holocaust: More Than Just A Story, Ashley Steinberg May 2013

Witnessing The Holocaust: More Than Just A Story, Ashley Steinberg

Communication

In this paper, I use discourse analytic procedures informed by conversation analysis to understand the testimony of Holocaust witnessing. This is important because, in looking at Holocaust witness testimony, we can understand how witnesses use specific tactics to prove their ownership of a certain experience and event that has occurred, and make that experience available for his or her audience. I use video testimony, produced transcripts of that testimony, and analyzed the two. My conclusions are drawn from this evidence to explain how Edith sequentially builds her narrative. In doing so, we can see her stories as specific and different …

Selected Writings, Ian Goldstein May 2013

Selected Writings, Ian Goldstein

Journalism Program

These writings make up the different forms of journalism that put together my thesis/portfolio. These selections illustrate the expansive reach of the journalism major. My thesis includes articles covering various issues. The research and writing that went into each piece was an important step in my journalism career. Inside are two narrative pieces, the first one short and simple and the second a lengthier, more extensive piece on religion on college campuses. The piece after that is one called Senseless, a story on a product that seems be marketing false claims to users. My most personal essay succeeds those—it is …

In response to the growing population of older adults who will need assistance to care for themselves, this research evaluates media coverage of care options for older adults presented in local newspapers, an informational resource used by baby boomers and older generations interested in planning for their futures and caring for their loved ones. Computer databases for four newspapers representing the Capital Region of New York State were scanned for keywords to identify articles about older adult care, then articles were reviewed to ensure they were relevant to older adult care.
