"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. A Clash Of Cultures: The Integration Of User-Generated Content Within Professional Journalistic Frameworks At British Newspaper Websites, Alfred Hermida, Neil J. Thurman

This study examines how national UK newspaper websites are integrating user-generated content (UGC). A survey quantifying the adoption of UGC by mainstream news organisations showed a dramatic increase in the opportunities for contributions from readers. In-depth interviews with senior news executives revealed this expansion is taking place despite residual doubts about the editorial and commercial value of material from the public. The study identified a shift towards the use of moderation due to editors' persistent concerns about reputation, trust, and legal liabilities, indicating that UK newspaper websites are adopting a traditional gate-keeping role towards UGC. The physical and social fabric of the United States is sustained by a system of systems; a complex and dynamic network of interlocking and interdependent infrastructures (“critical national infrastructures”) whose harmonious functioning enables the myriad actions, transactions, and information flow that undergird the orderly conduct of civil society in this country. We may ask why, at both the individual and collective levels, it has seemed so difficult for us to choose to evolve our human games with Joy. There is no one answer for such a question, for each of us has the gift of free will. I will suggest, however, that built into our human games is what I call a primary human challenge. That primary human challenge is a dynamic tension, flowing from our creative urge for the freedom “to be” who we really are in our current physical form, and simultaneously to embrace our responsibility for our Being-ness.

The United States now spends around $7 billion on universal service programs—subsidies intended to ensure that the entire country has access to telecommunications services. Most of this money supports telecommunications service in “high cost” (primarily rural) areas, and the High Cost fund is growing quickly. In response to this growth, policymakers are considering using reverse auctions, or bids for the minimum subsidy, as a way to reduce expenditures. While the U.S. has not yet distributed funds for universal service programs using reverse auctions, the method has been used widely. This paper identifies three interacting narrative strands in the Australian media coverage of “Jihad” Jack Thomas. The character story of Jack interacts with a broader story of law and the story of the war on terror. Secondly it argues that a set of mythic motifs emerge in the texts and these are read against a set of news and popular culture events and figures. The recent spate of cases in which reporters have been subpoenaed, fined, jailed, or otherwise disciplined has laid bare the divisions among the courts over the existence and scope of the “reporter’s privilege.” The cases have also exposed the doctrinal, historical, and theoretical infirmities of the broader legal framework that governs newsgathering. Resolving these conflicts has grown more urgent with the democratization of media and the emergence of bloggers and other news providers who have challenged traditional conceptions of “journalists” and “the press.” To settle these controversies, this Article moves past the courts’ desultory analyses, focuses on core principles, and …

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zwięzłe opisanie metody Action Research w teorii organizacji i zarządzania. Poprzez przybliżenie założeń, aksjomatów, celów i his-torii AR, tekst umożliwia zrozumienie filozofii tego podejścia. AR jest pokazane jako metoda umożliwiająca połączenie dwóch pozornie rozłącznych sposobów uprawiania pracy naukowej: podejścia praktycznego, nastawionego na rozwią-zywanie realnych problemów świata (czasami uznawanego za nienaukowe i nad-miernie przyziemne) z podejściem teoretycznym, nastawionym przede wszyst-kim na tworzenie abstrakcyjnych modeli i analiz umożliwiających generalizacje (czasami uznawanym za niepraktyczne i nadmiernie oderwane od realiów). Na podstawie akademickiego i biznesowego doświadczenia autorów AR jest przedsta-wiony jako atrakcyjny, spójny sposób uprawiania pracy badawczej i konsultingu.

Ubiquitäres Computing (UbiComp) bezeichnet eine alles durchdringende Informatisierung und Ver- netzung u.a. auch im Arbeitsleben. Es fügt sich in der industriellen Fertigung in die seit langem zu beobachtenden Trends der Rationalisierung und Flexibilisierung ein, beschleunigen diese und ver- stärken zum Teil deren Auswirkungen auf innerbetriebliche Prozesse. Mit Blick auf Tätigkeitsprofile und Qualifikationsanforderungen sind zwei gegenläufigen Folgen von UbiComp zu erwarten: Einer- seits werden bestimmte Tätigkeiten in der industriellen Fertigung eine qualitative Anreicherung und Erweiterung erfahren, während andererseits erweiterte Möglichkeiten zur Automatisierung von einfa- chen Kontroll-, Überwachungs- und anderen manuellen Tätigkeiten bestehen.
