Communication Studies

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are neurodegenerative disorders of the aging population characterized by the abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn). Previous studies have suggested that excitotoxicity may contribute to neurodegeneration in these disorders, however the underlying mechanisms and their relationship to alpha-syn remain unclear. For this study we proposed that accumulation of alpha-syn might result in alterations in metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), particularly mGluR5 which has been linked to deficits in murine models of PD. In this context, levels of mGluR5 were analyzed in the brains of PD and DLB human cases and alpha-syn transgenic (tg) …

A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau Aug 2010

A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau

Communication Studies

Explored as a series of five interrelated performative commitments, the author takes seriously the notion that live musical performance, especially when it is pervaded by an improvisational ethos, can be quite powerful and well worth close examination. In particular, the band Phish, with its devout subcultural following of “phans,” is mined as a rich site for critical, theoretical, and descriptive fodder. The author writes as both a phan and a scholar, drawing from his own experiences seeing Phish live on many occasions as well as from an interdisciplinary body of scholarly literature. The essay provides insight not only into the …

Preaching, Prosperity, And Product Sales: A Profile Of On-Demand Digital Audio Offerings Of Christian Renewalist Ministries, Douglas J. Swanson May 2010

Preaching, Prosperity, And Product Sales: A Profile Of On-Demand Digital Audio Offerings Of Christian Renewalist Ministries, Douglas J. Swanson

Journalism

In the United States alone, millions of listeners tune in to Internet-based audio-on-demand (commonly known as podcast programming). Religious programming is among the fastest-growing podcast areas. Since studies show that evangelicals are known to be quick to adopt new technology, this research involved a content analysis of 67 podcast episodes produced by five well-known renewalist evangelical ministries. The study found most podcasts were not original in content and were not consistently available for listeners to download. Also, the podcasts had poorer production values than would be expected from broadcast programming. A frame analysis identified ministries' justification of religious messages, listener …

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack Jan 2010

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack

Communication Studies

Virtual communities of practice are gaining attention among scholars and practitioners as managers and high-level executives look for ways to adapt to an ever-increasing rate of environmental change. These communities have been recognized as a tool for generating new ideas by accessing geographically distributed expertise. As most expert knowledge is tacit and tacit knowledge exchange is what leads to creativity, an understanding of antecedents to tacit knowledge exchange is needed. This manuscript responds by examining the role of trust, a well-known antecedent of creativity, within the context of virtual communities of practice. An interdisciplinary approach led to the development of …

Sense Of Community In Professional Virtual Communities, Anita Blanchard, David A. Askay, Katherine Frear Jan 2010

Sense Of Community In Professional Virtual Communities, Anita Blanchard, David A. Askay, Katherine Frear

Communication Studies

Sense of virtual community (feelings of identity, belonging, and attachment) is an essential component of virtual communities. In this chapter, we develop a model of how sense of virtual community develops in professional virtual communities. Based on sense of virtual community models in social virtual communities, we expect that the exchange of support, development of a group identity, and group norms will lead to a stronger professional sense of virtual community. Unlike social virtual communities, we also predict that employee/members occupational identification will increase professional sense of virtual community, particularly when the virtual community can provide support and information not …
