Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon Oct 2013

Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon

Suzanne Mellor

Many claims are made in the popular press and in professional education literature about the potential role of the social web for increasing the active civic engagement of young citizens, by either using it as a source of information or as a participatory tool. Empirical evidence supporting such claims is sparse and contested. Moreover, the impact of a young person’s general learning experience, especially that involving Web2, is rarely considered in terms of young people’s likely or actual active civic engagement. The Australian pilot research project Networking Young Citizens, supported by Monash University, examined the ways in which Web2 was …

Privileged Migration: American Undergraduates, Study Abroad, Academic Tourism, Marcus Breen Sep 2013

Privileged Migration: American Undergraduates, Study Abroad, Academic Tourism, Marcus Breen

Marcus Breen

American undergraduates are increasingly engaging in educational study abroad programmes. This article examines and explains the trends in international university education from the perspective of a former faculty member at Northeastern University, a large private university in Boston. The article explains how cultural studies can be invoked as a circuit breaker to challenge the assumptions of privileged Americans who travel to the (global) South. Drawing on his experience in leading undergraduates on summer programmes to Australia, the author explores ways in which the political work of cultural studies can be positioned within the diasporic experience of cultural studies academics, suggesting …

Doing Consumption, Doing Family, Jan Phillips Aug 2013

Doing Consumption, Doing Family, Jan Phillips

Jan Phillips

Seeking to acknowledge children as active participants in consumption, this essay examines adult-child negotiation over processes, items, and agency in commodity consumption broadly defined. This work makes the case that we should emphasize such negotiation when studying families and consumption, arguing that this form of interaction helps define and construct not just family members as consumers but, more importantly, the social essence of family as well. Using examples from current scholarly literature, as well as analysis of observation in public places and "toy odes" done by traditional and non-traditional college students, the essay illustrates how interacting children and adults negotiate …

Having The Last Word, But Losing The Culture Wars: Mainstream Press Coverage Of A Canceled Evangelical Benediction, Rick Moore Aug 2013

Having The Last Word, But Losing The Culture Wars: Mainstream Press Coverage Of A Canceled Evangelical Benediction, Rick Moore

Rick Clifton Moore

This study examines how mainstream news media reported the withdrawal of a popular pastor from the 2013 Obama inaugural ceremony. Louie Giglio was originally chosen for a role in the event, but withdrew when focus was placed on a sermon he once delivered about homosexuality. Analysis of framing and sourcing of the stories raises serious questions about the role media played in reporting about this skirmish, which is clearly part of the larger culture wars.

Online Credibility And Digital Ethos: Approaches For Evaluating And Incorporating Networked Information In The Digital Age, Shawn Apostel, Moe Folk

Shawn Apostel

With the near-ubiquity of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, access to acquiring and publishing online information has never been easier; however, with this advance in information technology comes new challenges for content providers to establish credibility and for students, researchers, and consumers to develop effective ways of evaluating online credibility. For example, students and instructors in writing classes across the world face challenges in creating research projects that did not exist even a decade ago. These issues are not just affecting American universities; therefore, this book addresses an international audience by offering approaches to evaluating the credibility of digital sources, including …

Real-Life: Authentic Journalism Assessment, Student Motivation And Active Learning, Caroline Graham May 2013

Real-Life: Authentic Journalism Assessment, Student Motivation And Active Learning, Caroline Graham

Caroline Graham

There is a substantial body of literature detailing the advantages of experiential and authentic learning opportunities, and evidence that they are common within tertiary journalism education. However, research about practical journalism assessment is limited (Steel, Carmichael, Holmes, Kinse & Sanders, 2007). This paper uses Gulikers, Bastiaens and Kirscher's (2004) Five-Point Framework for Authentic Assessment to design a practical body of assessment for a Journalism Research Methods class. Although the level of support first-year journalism students required impacted on the fidelity of the exercise, students' reflections on the experience support scholars' claims that authentic and experiential assessment opportunities increase motivation and …

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D. Apr 2013

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.

Michael I Niman Ph.D.

Mike Niman discusses the future of journalism in a PR-dominated communication environment. In particular, he examines the migration of talent from journalism to the PR industry, the collapse of mainstream journalism and the role of an emergent alternative media as American journalism goes through metamorphosis from what it was to what it could become. Journalism is a social good that should equip people to understand and resist spin. Niman argues that mainstream American journalism, rather than rising to this challenge, has transparently succumbed to serving as an arm of the corporate PR industry, thus laying the groundwork for its own …

New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich Mar 2013

New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich

Carol A Leibiger

Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

Designing Globally Networked Learning Environments: Visionary Partnerships, Policies, And Pedagogies, Doreen Starke-Meyerring, Melanie Wilson, Robbin Crabtree, David Sapp, Jose Malespin, Gonzalo Norori

David Alan Sapp

Robbin Crabtree (CAS, Communication, Fairfield University) and David. A. Sapp (CAS, English, Fairfield University) are contributing authors (Chapter 6). Book description: Faculty, administrators, and others in higher education face growing pressures to position their institutions, programs, and courses in "global markets" and to prepare students for global work and citizenship. These pressures raise urgent questions: What might higher education look like in a globally networked world? Do traditional industrial models of learning suffice, or what new visions for learning are emerging? What does it take to implement and maintain these visions? To address these questions, Designing Globally Networked Learning Environments …

Feminist Pedagogy: Looking Back To Move Forward, Robbin Crabtree, David Sapp, Adela Licona Mar 2013

Feminist Pedagogy: Looking Back To Move Forward, Robbin Crabtree, David Sapp, Adela Licona

David Alan Sapp

In addition to co-editing, David A. Sapp (CAS, English, Fairfield University) and Robbin Crabtree (CAS, Communication, Fairfield University) co-authored the introduction, "The passion and the praxis of feminist pedagogy". Book Description: This collection of essays traces the evolution of feminist pedagogy over the past twenty years, exploring both its theoretical and its practical dimensions. Feminist pedagogy is defined as a set of epistemological assumptions, teaching strategies, approaches to content, classroom practices, and teacher-student relationships grounded in feminist theory. To apply this philosophy in the classroom, the editors maintain that feminist scholars must critically engage in dialogue and reflection about both …
