A Comparison Of Ancient Mediterranean Metal Structural Fittings, Evan Galen Sharp Jan 2011

A Comparison Of Ancient Mediterranean Metal Structural Fittings, Evan Galen Sharp

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The construction of shelter is one of the basic activities that allows humans to survive. It is, moreover, one of the principal means by which we identify the occupation of a place by peoples who came before us. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean, methods and techniques flowed among populations as readily as any other commodity, and their manifestations bear witness to cultural contact as much as any transported religious, commercial, or military object. Moreover, since the construction of shelter is an activity common to all, functional techniques were a universally sharable knowledge. A collection and comparison of the …

Religious Tourism In Roman Greece, David James Stark Jan 2009

Religious Tourism In Roman Greece, David James Stark

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In recent years, Roman travel and tourism has become a focus of scholarship. Most of the scholarship however has focused either on religious travel through studies of pilgrimage or on secular travel through studies of tourism. Many tourism scholars however have begun to recognize that the differences between what is a tourist and what is a pilgrim is not as large as was once thought. These scholars have coined a new term, the religious tourist, to describe those travelers who seem to bridge the gap between the traditional definition of a pilgrim and the traditional definition of a tourist. Through …

Judean Pithoi Of Iron Age Eretz Israel, Penny Lynn Pearson Jan 1989

Judean Pithoi Of Iron Age Eretz Israel, Penny Lynn Pearson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The excavation and analysis of pottery is an important element in the archaeology of Eretz Israel and in the development of assemblages which are representative of selected strata. The developments in ceramic research over the last century and a half have revealed that there are common characteristics among the pottery produced in a country in a single period of time. There are, however, decided differences between the pottery of various geographical regions. The character and history of the Southern Kingdom of Judah is reflective of the various geographical zones of the country through which the ubiquitous nature of ceramics provides …

The Symbolism Of The Eye In Mesopotamia And Israel, Helen L. Seawright

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis explores eye symbolism within the context of the art forms of the Ancient Near East, including pottery, sculpture, idols of amulets, seals, cuneiform texts and the literature of the Old Testament. The central concern in this study is to bring together under one cover the iconography of the eye and its meaning from the cultures of Mesopotamia and Israel. The human eye has been a symbol for good or evil from earliest times. This thesis shows that the Mesopotamians focused mainly on the negative aspects of the eye in their belief system, while the Israelites focused on its …

Judahite Refortification Of The Lachish Frontier, Jeffrey Alan Blakely

Throughout the history of Judah a series of fortification systems was constructed to assist in the military protection of Judah. This thesis is a study of the changing patterns of fortification in southwest Judah throughout its existence.

Prior to the time of Rehoboam, Israel and Judah were protected first by the mobile armies of Saul and David and later by four major centers which garrisoned the troops of Solomon. Additional Solomonic fortification was erected for internal usage in what became known …

The Comparative Stratigraphy Of Palaeolithic Palestine With Special Emphasis On The Flint Implements, Kenneth Edwin Guenter

Since World War I the Palaeolithic industries of Palestine have been the subject of a considerable amount of investigation and discussion. The present writer intends, therefore, to present an account of those Palaeolithic industries in which this data is collected, systematized and interpreted in such a way that scholars working in this area of Near Eastern studies may have at their disposal a foundation which is readily meaningful and broadly factual.

The following thesis is a visual reconstruction of the 2nd century A.D. architectural concept of the Ilot de l’Amiraute as part of the Roman harbours at Carthage.

We recognise two principles by which the physical aspects of a village, town or city developed in antiquity. In the first, natural and topographical features are utilized and its development proceeds along or on top of such features. It is essentially Archaic. In the second, the concept of a planned town, city or harbour, with man made features, developed by man’s rationale, is followed. It is essentially Hellenistic. This second principle is applied …

Domestic Architecture As A Chronological Criterion For Early Bronze Age Palestine, Dorothea Ann Blow Jan 1977

Domestic Architecture As A Chronological Criterion For Early Bronze Age Palestine, Dorothea Ann Blow

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In recent years archaeological investigators have become increasingly interested in the study of the Proto-Urban and Early Bronze Ages in Palestine. These periods have been relatively neglected in the history of excavating largely due to the fact that on the most important sites the levels of these periods lie buried beneath the later accumulation of the tells.

At sites where Early Bronze levels have been uncovered, little attention has been given to the domestic architecture, mostly due to the archaeologist’s predisposition to unearth temple complexes and public buildings in the acropolis area. The excavator’s have also been concerned to examine …
