Gender, Dress, And Franciscan Tradition In The Mary Magdalen Chapel At San Francesco, Assisi, Penny Howell Jolly

Through the inclusion of newly invented scenes, innovative handling of established narratives, and symbolic use of clothing and hair, the Magdalen Chapel at San Francesco in Assisi (ca. 1305–19) presents a Magdalen who successfully models Franciscan values of renunciation, penitence, and caritas, her images thus resonating throughout the Upper and Lower Churches. Yet her position at San Francesco remains equivocal. As a New Testament saint, she logically functions as a model for St. Francis. His vita, however, anachronistically transforms her life, inspiring new narrative episodes—for example, her receipt of a garment—or reshaping established scenes, as at her conversion when demons …

An art museum’s purpose is to collect, preserve, research, and display art. This is also true for works that may be potentially controversial. The introduction of this thesis presents the style and background of artist Kara Walker whose art has, in the past, been considered controversial. To create exhibits, a museum must consider administrative elements such as mission statement, staff, funding, research, design, marketing, and educational programming. These elements are outlined in the Roles in Arts Administration section. This paper will examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western Christian civilizations, 325-1669, through the examination of two contemporary early fourteenth century interpretations of an episode in the infancy and betrothal narratives of the Mariological cycle. It will use the whole images and details of Giotto's The Betrothal of the Virgin in the Arena Chapel and The Virgin is Entrusted to Joseph in the narthex of Chora Church as lenses to reveal certain characteristics of Eastern and Western societies and the differences between them.

This study is a portrait of Victorian culture in America as it is represented in the photographic album and an examination of the album as an artifact of material culture. The album is viewed as a material and visual reference and the photograph as an historical document. Parallels are drawn between the album's structure, pictorial content and presentation, and compare similarly to the infra-structure of the society.
