Plastic Analysis Of Beam - Columns, Ning-Cheng Tsao
Plastic Analysis Of Beam - Columns, Ning-Cheng Tsao
Masters Theses
"The results of an analytical study of the inelastic deformation of a wide-flange steel beam-column are presented. Emphasis has been placed on the influence of axial thrust on the pinned-end beam-column subjected to equal end moments with opposite direction. For this type of beam-column behavior, the relationship between the applied moment, axial load, and resultant curvature for the region in the plastic range has been studied in this investigation"--Abstract, page ii.
A Study On Load Transfer Of Model Friction Piles, Richard Milton Franke
A Study On Load Transfer Of Model Friction Piles, Richard Milton Franke
Masters Theses
"Previous investigations concerned with disturbance of soft clay by driving displacement piles are summarized. The initiation of excess pore water pressures due to pile driving, and mechanisms of load transfer are also described, along with the applicapability of model pile testing in analysis of the various phenomena. Load tests were conducted on assorted sizes of model friction piles embedded in sedimented soil samples with consisted of a silt and clay mixture. Pilot holes of various diameters were cut in the samples. A theoretical load distribution curve was used to calculate the load transferred to the soil as a function of …

An Impact Sensitivity Study Of Reactive Materials, Carl E. Delong
An Impact Sensitivity Study Of Reactive Materials, Carl E. Delong
Masters Theses
"The impact sensitivity of a potassium chlorate, stabilized red phosphorous, Quso, and magnesium oxide mixture in a 34/14/4/2 ratio has been found to be about 18 ł 5 gram-centimeters for a 50% sensitivity to initiation. Chi-square tests at the 95% confidence level have determined that it is not possible to reject the hypothesis that the distribution is either normally distributed or log-normally distributed within the 50% range. Humidity, aging, and some additives were found to desensitize the mixture. Energy versus drop weight and test height curves show that momentum considerations are crucial over large test ranges in studies of impact …
The Effect Of Structure On The Consolidation Of Compacted Unsaturated Clay Soils, William Joseph Graham
The Effect Of Structure On The Consolidation Of Compacted Unsaturated Clay Soils, William Joseph Graham
Masters Theses
"Contained in this paper are the results of research which was performed to investigate the relation between the volume-change mechanisms of shrinkage and one-dimensional compression for two clay soils, including some samples whose structures had been altered by the addition of flocculating and dispersing agents. Shrinkage tests were conducted with a special mold designed to facilitate the study of a soil's shrinkage path. consolidation tests on undisturbed samples and one-dimensional compression tests on unsaturated samples compacted in the vicinity of optimum moisture content were performed. A detailed study was made of a highly plastic red Missouri clay. Complications arose in …
Some Aspects Of Aerated Open-Channel Flow At Shallow Depths And Low Velocities, D. L. Fread
Some Aspects Of Aerated Open-Channel Flow At Shallow Depths And Low Velocities, D. L. Fread
Masters Theses
"This study is concerned with the effect of entrained air bubbles on the open-channel hydraulics of water flowing at low velocities. The air bubbles are introduced into the flowing water by injecting diffused compressed air along the channel bottom. The variations of the velocity profile and velocity distribution energy coefficient of aerated and nonaerated flow are discussed. Empirical equations have been determined for the air concentration and increased depth of flow or "bulking" of the aerated open-channel flow. The investigation revealed a significant increase in the Manning roughness coefficient and the related Darcy friction factor for aerated flow relative to …

A Flood Frequency Study For Small Watersheds In Missouri, Ronald Anthony Rusch
Masters Theses
"The quantity and quality of streamflow data available on small watersheds in Missouri has improved in the last ten years. However, it will be years before there is sufficient data on both the large and small watersheds to enable investigators to conduct extensive studies in the state. This study of 70 small watersheds within the state of Missouri presents a technique to estimate the discharge from watershed of 25 square miles or less...Results from this study may be used in the design of small hydraulic structures such as culverts, bridges, and dams for small reservoirs"--Abstract, page ii.
Some Effects Of Lead-Zinc Mining Wastewater On A Stream Environment, Anthony Ralph De Alonso Handler
Some Effects Of Lead-Zinc Mining Wastewater On A Stream Environment, Anthony Ralph De Alonso Handler
Masters Theses
"The continuous discharge of lead-zinc mine and mill wastewater into some streams in southeastern Missouri may alter the ecology of those streams. A field and laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the potential pollution problem. Bee Fork Creek, the first stream in that area to receive tailings from mining operations, was selected for this study and periodically surveyed. Laboratory tests included static bioassays of lead, zinc, and copper, and the mode of action of the metals was investigated through post-mortem examination of the experimental fish. The test animals used in the bioassays were bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus, Rafinesque). The heavy …

Sorption And Desorption Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Pesticides By Clay Minerals, Cheng Sun Liao
Masters Theses
"This thesis describes the sorption and desorption of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides by clay minerals under laboratory controlled environmental systems. Particular emphasis was directed toward the investigation of the fundamental adsorption phenomena which occurred in selected pesticide-clay systems. the effects of certain environmental stresses, including pH, temperature and salt (NaCl) concentration of water, on the behavior of sorption and desorption were also studied. Pesticides selected for this study included DDT, dieldrin and heptachlor, and clay minerals employed were kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite. The adsorption rate and equilibrium were evaluated by batch techniques employing completely mixed systems while the effects of the …
Laboratory Measurement Of Pore Water Pressure Induced By A Model Friction Pile, Charles Alfred Miller
Laboratory Measurement Of Pore Water Pressure Induced By A Model Friction Pile, Charles Alfred Miller
Masters Theses
"This research program has been undertaken to develop a laboratory testing procedure for the measurement of pore water pressure induced by the static loading of a model friction pile. Most of the investigation involved the design, construction, and testing of equipment to be used during the tests which would produce satisfactory and reliable results. It was also desired to simulate field conditions during the tests. A series of tests were performed varying the consolidation pressure on the soil around the model pile. The effects of changing the location of the pore pressure measurements was also investigated. Results of the tests …
Correlation Of Particulate Theory And Behavior Of Real Soils, Christopher Byron Groves
Correlation Of Particulate Theory And Behavior Of Real Soils, Christopher Byron Groves
Masters Theses
"The behavior of granular soils subjected to triaxial stresses can be explained in terms of a combination of elastic deformation and sliding friction. Three sans and a coarse silt at various initial void ratios were tested in drained triaxial compression. Cell pressures were varied between 50 and 1500 psi. Prediction techniques for simulating laboratory data was based on various packings of equal radii spheres. Equilibrium and compatibility equations were used to calculate the principal strains under certain applied stresses. The assumed arrays predicted much smaller strains than those than the soils exhibited. If these strains were subtracted from those observed, …
A Study Of Different Types Of Connections To Structural-Steel Square Tubings, Chao-Sheng Chen
A Study Of Different Types Of Connections To Structural-Steel Square Tubings, Chao-Sheng Chen
Masters Theses
"Although square tubular element has long been recognized as an ideal structural member, its acceptance was limited by the lack of detailed knowledge on suitable connections related to this geometric shape. It is structurally inefficient to use a strong column poorly connected to a strong beam. So it is necessary to understand, in advance of adoption, the effect and behavior of different types of connections and to develop an efficient structural system. In this study, the ordinary column-to-beam framing with different types of connections has been investigated. The three types of connections are single-plate connection, double-angle connection, and multi-angle connection. …
Static And Dynamic Instability Analysis Of Rigid Frames With Timoshenko Members, Carlton Lee Smith
Static And Dynamic Instability Analysis Of Rigid Frames With Timoshenko Members, Carlton Lee Smith
Masters Theses
"In this thesis, a technique has been developed to determine the natural frequencies of plane rigid frames with the consideration bending, shear deformation, rotatory inertia, and internal axial forces. The internal forces are functions of the instability load of the vibrating system for which the effects of bending and shear deformation on the stability of this structure are considered. For the sake of completeness, the matrix formulations for the dynamic or stability analysis of a rigid frame are given. The stiffness matrices of these formulations are then derived. The influence of shear deformation, rotatory inertia, and internal axial force is …
The Influence Of Organic Matter On Shear Strength Of A Cohesive Soil, Kamran Rezvan
The Influence Of Organic Matter On Shear Strength Of A Cohesive Soil, Kamran Rezvan
Masters Theses
"The shearing properties of an organic A̲ horizon of Bryce clay were studied and compared with the properties of the same soil treated with hydrogen peroxide. The treatment was to remove the organic matter and isolate it as a variable. Tests were performed on artificially sedimented samples of the untreated, 75 percent untreated, 50 percent untreated, 25 percent untreated, and the treated soil. The effective stress failure envelopes were found to be higher for the untreated soil than that of the treated. The elastic deformation, however, was larger for the untreated samples. The pore water pressure development due to shearing …
The Influence Of Several Factors On The Rate Of Secondary Compression Of Soil, William Joel Green
The Influence Of Several Factors On The Rate Of Secondary Compression Of Soil, William Joel Green
Masters Theses
"This research program has been undertaken to study the influence of load increment ratio, temperature, and sample thickness on Cα (rate of secondary consolidation) for a high organic content and low organic content soil. Consolidation equipment was designed to produce constant temperatures both above and below ambient, and to accommodate both 3/4 and 1 1/2 inch thick samples. Samples were molded into oedometer rings at the liquid limit. It was found that Cα was independent of the sample thickness and load increment ratio for both the high organic and low organic soils. The influence of temperature on Cα was found …

A Study Of The Correlation Potential Of The Optimum Moisture Content, Maximum Dry Density, And Consolidated Drained Shear Strength Of Plastic Fine-Grained Soils With Index Properties, Marvin Tartt Harris
Masters Theses
"The correlation potential of the compaction properties and the consolidated drained shear strength parameters of plastic fine-grained soils with index properties was investigated in this study. The interrelationships of these properties were derived through graphical and multilinear regression analysis. The compaction properties, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density were found to be related to many of the index properties. The most important relationships were with the plasticity indices and the percentage of particles smaller than two microns; the highest degree of simple correlation was achieved with the liquid limit. The consolidated drained shear parameters, cohesion, and the angle of …
