Evaluating The Effectiveness And Hydrological Performance Of Green Infrastructure Stormwater Control Measures., Hamidreza Kazemi Dec 2014

Evaluating The Effectiveness And Hydrological Performance Of Green Infrastructure Stormwater Control Measures., Hamidreza Kazemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) has developed a Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP) to address the combined sewer overflow (CSO) issue through a combination of gray and green infrastructure (GI) stormwater management practices in the city of Louisville. In support of this effort, the MSD installed a series of GI stormwater control measures (SCMs) to abate the CSO volumes in an urban sewershed basin. This research is focused on monitoring and evaluating the individual hydrological performance, which included infiltration and exfiltration processes, of two permeable pavement systems over a two year study period. It also assess the …

Early-Age Hydration Studies Of Portland Cement, Fengjuan Liu Dec 2014

Early-Age Hydration Studies Of Portland Cement, Fengjuan Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our current knowledge on cement hydration during setting is based on the discrete observation of hydrated paste. An advanced micro/nano-level technique which can perform the in-situ observation on the continuous hydration of cement paste is demanded. In this study, Raman spectroscopy (RS) was chosen as such a method to continuously investigate wet pastes. The objective of this research is to explore the hydration process and microstructural development of fresh pastes with this technique. This research was conducted in three phases. First, the RS analysis was used to continuously observe the cement hydration from 20 minutes after mixing to 9 hours. …

The Effect Of Infrastructure Changes On Railway Operations., Martin J.R. Schmidt 1966- Dec 2014

The Effect Of Infrastructure Changes On Railway Operations., Martin J.R. Schmidt 1966-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper makes use of standard simulation programs in combination with the tools of applied statistics to simulate railway operations. The purpose of the use of this tool is to evaluate and compare different possible kinds of railway infrastructure, like different types of signaling procedures, different network configuration or operational procedures. A railway system is a logistic network and because of the demand for improved railway operation, much work has been undertaken lately in this scientific field. However the author postulates the hypothesis based on a literature review that in a lot of these works there is a lack of …

Classification System Of The Physical Streambed Habitat., Abolfazl Shafaie Aug 2014

Classification System Of The Physical Streambed Habitat., Abolfazl Shafaie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A streambed is the channel bottom of a stream, river, or creek; the physical confine of the normal water flow. It provides necessities for fish and microinvertebrate including shelter, food, and breeding spots. Therefore, it is an essential part of aquatic animal habitats and often seen as an index of stream health. There is no generally accepted method to quantify streambed physical components and depending upon state and organization a variety of methods are used. The procedure provided in the rapid bioassessment protocol (RBP) (Kaufmann et al., 1999; Sylte and Fischenich, 2002) is probably the most widely used method to …

Experimental Investigation On The Shear Characteristics Of Gfrp Reinforcement Systems Embedded In Concrete., Austin Beau Connor Jul 2014

Experimental Investigation On The Shear Characteristics Of Gfrp Reinforcement Systems Embedded In Concrete., Austin Beau Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To mitigate the deterioration of steel-reinforced concrete members, a fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) system has been introduced and has increasingly been used to replace the conventional steel reinforcing bar. However, questions remain about the performance of the Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bar in concrete with varied stress orientation and shape. The GFRP reinforcement is an anisotropic material that possesses low strength for the transverse direction. This paper presents the results of the shear performance of GFRP reinforcement crossing varied crack angles. Fifteen push-off specimens were tested to investigate the shear characteristics of the GFRP and steel reinforcement. Tests were …

Forecasting Seasonal Hydrologic Response In Major River Basins., A. M. Tanvir Hossain Bhuiyan May 2014

Forecasting Seasonal Hydrologic Response In Major River Basins., A. M. Tanvir Hossain Bhuiyan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal precipitation variation due to natural climate variation influences stream flow and the apparent frequency and severity of extreme hydrological conditions such as flood and drought. To study hydrologic response and understand the occurrence of extreme hydrological events, the relevant forcing variables must be identified. This study attempts to assess and quantify the historical occurrence and context of extreme hydrologic flow events and quantify the relation between relevant climate variables. Once identified, the flow data and climate variables are evaluated to identify the primary relationship indicators of hydrologic extreme event occurrence. Existing studies focus on developing basin-scale forecasting techniques based …
