Analytical And Experimental Of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Effect On Moisture And Corrosion In An Inhomogeneous Medium, Dafnik Saril Kumar David Aug 2023

Analytical And Experimental Of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Effect On Moisture And Corrosion In An Inhomogeneous Medium, Dafnik Saril Kumar David

Civil Engineering Dissertations

This dissertation presents electromagnetic wave studies for infrastructure. The research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in moisture and provides insights into corrosion detection and monitoring in reinforced concrete infrastructure. Three major studies are performed to: 1) understand the multiple wave scattering in inhomogeneous moisture medium, 2) validate the experimental reflection through analytical finite difference time domain simulations with experimental measurements, and 3) evaluate the electromagnetic wave responses in the early stage and post stage corrosion experimentally, and 4) develop rapid corrosion monitoring methodology for field applications by employing cutting-edge electromagnetic wave image processing as refer to …

Modeling Of Hydrogen Sulfide Generation And Rates Of Microbial Induced Concrete Corrosion In Manhole Shafts, Sunakshi Hada Aug 2021

Modeling Of Hydrogen Sulfide Generation And Rates Of Microbial Induced Concrete Corrosion In Manhole Shafts, Sunakshi Hada

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Manhole shafts can undergo infrastructure failure due to microbially induced concrete corrosion (MICC). Deterioration of the sewer systems by MICC process occurs due to the volatilization of hydrogen sulfide into the gas phase. The volatized hydrogen sulfide gas reacts with oxygen to form sulfuric acid, resulting in concrete corrosion. If optimum conditions are present, 24 mm of concrete loss can occur in 31 months, and the cost of fixing can range from $10-$30 per square foot. Also, if the manholes are not properly maintained, they can cause serious safety hazards, such as manhole lids falling through the structure, streets giving …

Performance Of Cracked Reinforced Concrete Pipes Subjected To Different Environmental Conditions, Bassam Hatem Karim Al-Lami Aug 2020

Performance Of Cracked Reinforced Concrete Pipes Subjected To Different Environmental Conditions, Bassam Hatem Karim Al-Lami

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Performance of reinforced concrete pipes, as a major part of the water and waste-water infrastructure, plays an important role in the resilience and sustainability of today’s modern cities. Cracks may appear in these pipes due to handling and placement and might affect their long-term performance due to corrosion concerns. Current practice for quality control after installation of these pipes is quite strict and any pipe with a crack width of more than 0.01" is not approved. The goal of this research project is to evaluate the performance of cracked reinforced concrete pipes subjected to saline environments with three different concentration …
