Coagulation In Waste Water Treatment, Garret P. Westerhoff

Theses

This paper emphasizes a practical approach to the coagulation of domestic waste water. A portion of the paper is a synopsis of current published literature on the subject. Laboratory studies on the coagulation of raw domestic waste waters were conducted to provide the basis of a practical procedure for the evaluation and design of a coagulation process. Studies included the development of a relationship between the B.O.D. and the soluble and solids portion of two waste tests. The jar test was used for the studies on the coagulation process. The final section of the paper outlines the chemical cost factors …

Design Criteria For Usu Stilling Basin Pipe Flow To Open Channels, Chi-Yuan Wei May 1968

Design Criteria For Usu Stilling Basin Pipe Flow To Open Channels, Chi-Yuan Wei

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Criterion have been developed in this study for designing a stilling basin to serve as a transition from pipe flow to open channel flow. The purpose of the structure is to prevent erosion in an open channel. The unsteadiness, or smoothness, of the water surface in the model basin was used as the criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of the structure for energy dissipation.

The introduction of a short-pipe energy dissipater in the stilling basin has proven effective in dissipating energy. The stilling basin was designed for a fully submerged pipe outlet. The inflow pipe and the dissipator pipe were …

Streamflow Forecasting For The Logan And Blacksmith Fork Rivers In Northern Utah, Kenneth A. Mangelson May 1968

Streamflow Forecasting For The Logan And Blacksmith Fork Rivers In Northern Utah, Kenneth A. Mangelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Accurate streamflow forecasts have been recognized as being important by water users and others whose occupations and pursuits depend upon the supply of water from snow fed streams.

The streamflow forecasting equations for the important predictive periods, in particular the April through September and the May through September total flows, were developed in this study for both the Logan and Blacksmith Fork Rivers.

Multiple linear regress ion was used as a mathematical model in determining the streamflow forecasting equations. A correlation analysis was used to determine the importance of the variables used in the mathematical model. The results of this …

The Compressibility Of Preconsolidated Till, William H. Koechlein Jan 1968

The Compressibility Of Preconsolidated Till, William H. Koechlein

Masters Theses

"Preconsolidated glacial till was tested "in-situ" with the Geoprobe and in the laboratory on undisturbed soil samples. The two soil testing methods were compared and three tests; consolidation, "thin-cake", and Geoprobe were analyzed to see if a more rapid method for determining the preconsolidation stress of soil could be developed. When comparing Geoprobe results to laboratory results for foundation conditions, it was found the two methods agreed on bearing capacity but differed significantly on settlement. The three tests analyzed for determining the preconsolidation stress indicated they are a function of preconsolidation stress even though there was variation in the test …

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the removal of phosphorus by chemical precipitation with sodium aluminate and alum in the activated sludge aeration chamber, and determine the effect of the aluminum to phosphorus ratio and the mixed liquor suspended solids concentration on the phosphorus removal efficiency and the effect of the precipitants on the removal of organic pollutants in the activated sludge process. The studies were conducted on settled domestic sewage in three bench-scale continuous flow activated sludge units supplemented with jar tests. Major parameters employed included influent and effluent total phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand (COD), mixed …

Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson Jan 1968

Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson

Masters Theses

"A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests with pore pressure measurements were performed on laboratory sedimented samples having various known silt to clay content ratios. The clay used was commercial grundite clay from Goose Lake, Illinois, and the silt used was extracted from Lebanon Silt Loam from Rolla, Missouri. Silt was mixed with clay in the following percentages by weight: 0%, 20%, 40%, 50%, and 80%. Results indicate an increasing angle of internal friction with an increase in silt content. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples remained constant, as would be expected in a clay, with increasing silt content …

The Effects Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soils, Thomas Michael Mcmillen Jan 1968

The Effects Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soils, Thomas Michael Mcmillen

Masters Theses

"Studies of the effect of grinding on clay soils are summarized. Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are also explored. Vetters clay and Lebanon silt loam are used as test soils. these soils are ground to varying degrees and the deviations in physical properties are determined. Atterberg Limits, specific gravity, grain size, X-ray diffraction, and D.T.A. tests are run on each soil batch (ground for 0 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 120 minutes). A thixotropic study, consisting of unconfined compression and laboratory vane shear tests, of each soil batch is made. The results of the tests are analyzed, compared, and …

The Influence Of Silt On The Compressibility Of An Illitic Clay, James Inman Spencer Jan 1968

The Influence Of Silt On The Compressibility Of An Illitic Clay, James Inman Spencer

Masters Theses

"This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of varying amounts of clay (illite) on the compressibility of a silt as it may be found in nature in a normally consolidated deposition. Laboratory procedure was designed to minimize sample disturbance so as to obtain, as nearly as possible, a virgin consolidation curve. By varying the amounts of silt and clay in a given sample, and sedimenting the sample from a soil-water suspension, consolidation test analyses were used for a comparison of the various samples. Results revealed that between sample mixtures of 40 and 60 percent silt there was a relatively …

A Comparison Of Proportional And Nonproportional Damping In Multistory Shear Buildings, Edwin C. Bailey Jan 1968

A Comparison Of Proportional And Nonproportional Damping In Multistory Shear Buildings, Edwin C. Bailey

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to determine whether proportional damping could be used to satisfactorily simulate the more practical nonproportional damping condition in multistory shear buildings. To accomplish this one computer program was written to analyze proportionally damped systems and another to analyze nonproportionally damped systems, each giving as output the frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, shears and moments and the maximum shears and moments. Shear buildings of two, three and four stories were studied in which the damping coefficients were varied from one to ten percent of critical damping. Although the programs could handle various other types, only linearly …

Engineering Properties Of Bloomington-Normal Subsoils, Rohn Dunseth Abbott Jan 1968

Engineering Properties Of Bloomington-Normal Subsoils, Rohn Dunseth Abbott

Masters Theses

"The glacial subsoils of the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois area have been analyzed with regard to their engineering properties. Several boring logs are included to illustrate the horizontal and vertical variability in soil units encountered and in the engineering properties of these soil units. The engineering properties of the two most common foundation soils, the Bloomington and Normal tills are compared and special consideration is given to evaluating the compressibility of these materials. Evidence is presented that indicates that the circumferential trimming of a highly preconsolidated soil containing stones can cause significant sample disturbance. Special sampling techniques which eliminate circumferential trimming yield …

Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes Jan 1968

Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes

Masters Theses

"Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are described, and previous investigations of thixotropic behavior in soil systems are summarized. The complex nature of the thixotropic phenomena as well as its general occurrence in fine grained soils is described. As existing hypothesis for thixotropic behavior based on initial non-equilibrium conditions is examined. Experimental results, as determined from a testing program on the Putnam clay, verify this hypothesis. The rate and magnitude of thixotropic strength increases of the Putnam clay were determined. Shear strength determinations were made by the unconfined compression and laboratory vane shear tests. The results of the tests were compared …
