Low energy electron impact ionization (LEEII) time of flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) has been used to interrogate gases sampled through an orifice from a diamond growth surface. Methane, chloromethane and chloroform precursor gases were examined to produce electron energy plots of the fragment ions that occur using LEEII. Filament temperature studies were completed covering temperatures from room temperature to over 2000 °C, and the results were compared to the LEEII plots. The monochloromethyl radical has been detected in the experiments using chloroform and the effect of a pretreatment with this radical present has been shown to enhance diamond nucleation. …

Many binuclear transition metal complexes have been studied to understand the nature of interactions between the metal centers. People have found Simultaneous Pair Excitation phenomenon in some bimetallic system that can serve as a potential source of Non-Linear Optical behavior.
Thus a series of Cr2 -([14]aneN4)2-X4n+ complexes were synthesized and characterized. Only the cis,cis configuration was found. The results were compared with those of their monomer analogs. Chlorine has been widely used in industry. One of the most common uses of chlorine is in municipal water treatment plants. Chlorine reacts with a variety of organic compounds, among these are phenol and its derivatives which are commonly found in natural waters. When these compounds react with chlorine, a variety of chlorine substituted and oxidized products result depending on concentrations, pH, and temperature. In order to study these reactions it is necessary to separate and determine the various products produced.

Cancer researchers are interested in identifying the environmental causes and synergistic influences of different carcinogens. It is important to examine the combined effect of multiple carcinogens since this is a more realistic representation of the true environmental situation in which we are exposed daily. Our study has reported that pretreating human fibroblasts with nickel subsulfide followed by the simultaneous treatment with both nickel subsulfide and benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (BPDE) can protect human fibroblasts from the mutagenic effects of BPDE. These results correlate well with our previous chromium-BPDE co-treatment work, suggesting a transition metal dependent protective effect. This protective effect was dependent …

The micro-array behavior of boron doped CVD diamond thin film electrodes has been studied in acetonitrile containing two redox couples. The analytical technique employed in these studies was cyclic voltammetry. One system is 0.4 mM ferrocene containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAH). This reversible redox system is not only well-known, but also involves only one electron transfer with no breakage/formation of chemical bonds, thus making it a simple system for analysis. The second test is 0.8 mM cobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate, with 0.4 mM ferrocene as an internal standard. Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. VOCs are a class of aromatic and aliphatic compounds with a variety of functional groups, and are in general detrimental to human health even at trace levels. Conventional analysis of VOCs in groundwater usually involves sampling at site followed by laboratory analysis. A wide range of primary and secondary contaminants is found in environmental matrices containing explosive residues. HPLC methodology for the detection of explosive is now standardized in EPA Method 8330, and represents the most common method currently used for explosive analysis. However, co-elution of some of the analytes occurs even using method 8330. As a result, explosive analysis using HPLC have required the use of a confirmation column in an additional analysis step.

In chapter 1, the liquid/ liquid extraction of americium (III) from nitric and hydrochloric acid solutions with chloroform solutions of 2, 6 bis[ (diphenylphosphino) methyl] pyridine N, P. P' trioxide (ENOPOPO) is examined. Americium (III) is efficiently extracted from aqueous solutions at high nitric acid concentrations (Dam> 3000 at 6 M HNO3. The ligand dependency data suggest that two ligand molecules are coordinated to the americium. From hydrochloric acid solutions, ENPOPO exhibits modest extraction ability for americium (III) (Dam = 2.2 at5 M HCL) and can be efficiently back extracted from the organic phase at 0.1 M HCL. The N-terminal amino acid residues on polypeptides and proteins were determined in wastewaters prior to chlorination. The terminal amino groups'ere first derivatized with the well known derivatizing agent dansyl chloride, and then the resulting dansyl amino acid hydrolyzed from the peptide chain by a propionic acid/ hydrochloric acid mixture. The resulting dansyl amino acids were then separated and detected using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The majority of N-terminal residues detected were the more polar amino acids. Concentrations ranged from 1 x 10-10 to 3 x 10-7 moles/liter. It is suggested that the shorter …

Flash photolysis has proven to be an effective technique for determining reaction mechanisms. Upon photolysis, a CO ligand is removed from Cr(CO)6 forming the reactive molecular fragment Cr(C0)5. In the presence of alkene, L, Cr(CO)s can react to form the meta-stable intermediate Cr(C0)5L. At high L concentrations, Cr(CO)5L decays by pseudo-first-order kinetics with an observed rate constant, kobs, which is dependent on the concentration of both L and added CO. The exar.t nature of the dependence provides insight into the mechanism of the decay of Cr(C0)5L and a plot of 1/kobs vs. [L] will give the rate constants for both …

Valvular failure due to calcification and leaflet disruption of artificial bioprostheses is still a major concern in valve replacement surgery. Previous studies have shown that Glutaraldehyde, a chemical used in the treatment of artificial valves promotes calcification. In this investigation glutaraldehyde and No-React® treated tissue samples of pericardium, cusp and the aortic wall were tested for cytocompatibility using live mouse fibroblast cultures. The samples were cut into 3 X 3 mm2 washed in phosphate buffered saline solution, transferred into cell culture flask containing cells that had been cultured for 24 hours and incubated at 37 "C in 5 % CO2. …

The reduction reaction of nitric oxide (NO) by carbon monoxide (CO), and granular activated carbon (GAC) in the presence and absence of oxygen was studied in a fixed bed catalytic reactor. The conversion of NO as a function of reaction temperature was evaluated for various reductant to NO ratios and space velocities. The results show that oxygen enhanced the NO+CO reaction over copper (Cu) ion exchanged ZSM-5. About 60% NO conversion to nitrogen (N2) was obtained at 400°C and 2,000 v/v/hr. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that CO is an intermediate in the soot-NO reaction. The …

Nizatidine, N-[2-[[[2-[(dimethylamino)metbyl]-4-thiazolyl]methyl]thio]ethyl]-N'methyl- 2-nitro-l,l-ethenediamine (Axid"), has been investigated for its potential to act as a host in guest-host complexes. Nizatidine binds with the guests through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Guest-host studies were conducted using fluorescence quenching, calorimetry, NMR and invisible experiments. The lowest energy conformation of nizatidine is found to be U-shaped through theoretical calculations. Fluorescence experiments indicated that tryptophan and pyridoxine had large association constants. Further studies using calorimetry and NMR techniques concluded that no complexation had occurred. Complexation experiments have been done to find guests that complex with nizatidine. Caffeine, luminol, nicotinamide, phenylalanine, pyridoxine, pyrogallol, and tryptophan were …

The bioremediation of contaminated soils or the biomining of waste tillings has been explored through the use of hyperaccumulating plants such as S. polygaloides which is a nickel hyperaccumulator. However, it is important to discover which soils are well-suited for this type of process by determining the plant-availability of the nickel. By extracting the nickel sequentially with increasing severity it is possible to determine the chemical distribution, or fractionation, of nickel in a soil. The focus of this work is to examine the thermal reactivity of the Cp*Re(CO)(NO)NO2 complex. Upon heating with a flame, the orange crystals decompose very rapidly, with a darkening of color and gas production. To investigate this reaction, the decomposition was carefully controlled by heating with N2 gas, and in heated solution. The products obtained from the heated solution were purified using column chromatography, yielding two new interesting compounds, believed to be Cp*ReNO dimers with bridging oxygens.

Asbestos is a general term for a group of fibrous silicates. Diseases such as asbestosis, bronchogenic carcinoma, and mesothelioma have been linked to asbestos exposure (1,2). The 1 two classes of asbestos, serpentine and amphibole, are distinguished by differences in structure and chemical composition (3). The amphibole crocidolite contains 27% iron while the serpentine chrysotile contains only 2-3% iron. The higher iron content of crocidolite is proposed to be a contributing factor for a much higher incidence of cancer with crocidolite exposure compared with chrysotile exposure ( 4). In this investigation, a method was developed for the determination of purity of the drug PNU-10483 using the technique of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). CZE was seen as a potential alternative to the formerly used procedure of ion-pair reversed phase highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Nearly five years earlier, a similar study was performed, in which an attempt was made to develop a method that used CZE to determine the purity of bulk drug and the potency of drug tablets. The primary objective of this research is to develop an inexpensive and reliable method to generate vapor pulses of explosives using 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene TNTl for proof of concept. A secondary objective is to demonstrate the use of the vapor generator in various applications keeping in mind potential field scenarios involving explosives. A vapor generator/collector system was developed which gives reproducible pulses of TNT vapors at nanogram levels. Thermodynamic properties, ΔHf°298, S°298 and Cp(T) 300≤T/K≤1500, for C1, C2 chlorocarbons are calculated by AM1 and PM3 in MOPAC6, then compared with the literature data. AM1- and PM3-derived S°298 and Cp(T) (300≤T/K≤1500) are found to be consistent with the literature (Rd ≤ ± 5%). Acidic mine drainage flow from active and abandoned coal mines has been a major source of water pollution in the Appalachian Mountain region of the eastern USA. Water samples were collected and analyzed from Blackwater River watershed during 2 years (September 1996 - May 1998). The water quality measurements determined that the Beaver Creek and North Fork tributaries were affected by acid mine drainage but not Yellow Creek. Beaver Creek and North Fork stations had high sulfate and manganese markers of acid mine drainage, whereas Yellow Creek was slightly acidic with low sulfate and manganese. This study was concerned with the attempted development of a generalized synthesis of hexaphenylbutadiene. Three methods were attempted: Michael Addition of cyanide to -phenylcinnamate followed by organolithium or Grignard addition; reaction of benzil with two moles of the Wittig reagent prepared from bromodiphenylmethane; reaction of two moles of benzophenone with the bisphosphorane prepared from 1,2- dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane.
