Synthesis And Characterization Of Chitosan Derivatives Intended For Gene Delivery Applications, Alex M. Mcmullen Jan 2022

Synthesis And Characterization Of Chitosan Derivatives Intended For Gene Delivery Applications, Alex M. Mcmullen

MSU Graduate Theses

Chitosan has been studied as a non-viral vector capable of efficient gene delivery due to its favorable properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and is non-toxic to mammalian cells. Incorporating electrostatic interactions in non-viral vectors enhance the vector permeability. This work focuses on two parts. Firstly, cationic chitosan derivatives were synthesized using quarternary ammonium and phosphonium groups. This was achieved by coupling carboxylic acid ligands with these quarternary groups to chitosan through an amide bond. The carboxylic acid ligands were synthesized from 4-methylbenzoic acid and either triethyl phosphine or triethyl amine. The ligand was then attached to chitosan through an amide …

Elucidating Mechanisms For S-Nitrosoglutathione Reductase Activity And Control In Plants Using O-Aminobenzoyl-S-Nitrosoglutathione And A Novel Photo-Sensitive Probe, Leslie Ventimiglia Jan 2022

Elucidating Mechanisms For S-Nitrosoglutathione Reductase Activity And Control In Plants Using O-Aminobenzoyl-S-Nitrosoglutathione And A Novel Photo-Sensitive Probe, Leslie Ventimiglia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

S-nitrosoglutathione reductase, (GSNOR) is widely accepted as the master regulator of stress through NO signaling and protein S-nitrosylation. GSNOR mediates stress response through the catalysis of its principal substrate S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). The instigation of various stressors in plants cause observable changes in plant phenotype, which are associated with changes in GSNOR activity. There are no current methods for measuring GSNOR activity directly in living plants. In this paper, a previously developed fluorogenic pseudo-substrate for human GSNOR, OAbz-GSNO, was applied to the Solanum lycopersicum plant model. OAbz-GSNO was identified as a promising novel pseudo- substrate to study changes …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Ammonium/Phosphonium Chitosan Derivatives For Investigative Dna Interactions, Quinton Kirk Wyatt Aug 2018

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Ammonium/Phosphonium Chitosan Derivatives For Investigative Dna Interactions, Quinton Kirk Wyatt

MSU Graduate Theses

Chitosan is examined as a non-viral vector capable of efficient gene delivery due to its favorable properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and is non-toxic to mammalian cells. Cell modifications and vector permeability are enhanced in non-viral vectors that incorporate electrostatic interactions. This work synthesizes cationic (N+, P+) chitosan derivatives, to enhance electrostatic interactions towards nucleotides, using amide coupling agents EDC and HOBt. The final chitosan derivatives will bear cationic functional groups (N+, P+) with various alkyl groups (Me, Et, Pr, Ph) to examine their affinities to nucleotides and antifungal properties. mPEG grafted …

Evolution Of Selected Isoprene Oxidation Products In Dark Aqueous Ammonium Sulfate, D.M. Ashraf Ul Habib Jan 2014

Evolution Of Selected Isoprene Oxidation Products In Dark Aqueous Ammonium Sulfate, D.M. Ashraf Ul Habib

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The aqueous phase processing of glyoxylic acid, pyruvic acid, oxalic acid and methylglyoxal was studied simulating dark and radical free atmospheric aqueous aerosol. A novel observation of the cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond in pyruvic acid and glyoxylic acid leading to their decarboxylation was made in the presence of ammonium salts but no decarboxylation was observed from oxalic acid. The empirical rate constants for decarboxylation were determined. The structure of the acid, ionic environment of solution and concentration of species found to affect the decarboxylation process. A tentative set of reaction mechanisms was proposed involving nucleophilic attack by ammonia on …

Measurement Of Atmospheric Ammonia Species : Development, Validation, And Field Applications Of An Analytical Method, Jian Hou Jan 2009

Measurement Of Atmospheric Ammonia Species : Development, Validation, And Field Applications Of An Analytical Method, Jian Hou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ammonia is the primary base in the atmosphere. It reacts readily with atmospheric acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid to form ammonium salts that occur predominantly in the fine aerosol particle (PM2.5) fraction. The ability to measure ammonia species (NHx, the sum of gaseous NH3 and particulate NH4+) is essential for the investigation of atmospheric behaviors of NHx. In this dissertation work, a highly sensitive technique has been developed for the measurement of atmospheric NHx species. The method is based on aqueous scrubbing of the atmospheric NH3 and NH4+ using …
