Synthesis Of Diazonium Perfluoroalkyl(Aryl) Sufonimide (Pfsi) Zwitterions For Solid Acid Alkylation Catalysts, Husan Ahmad May 2015

Synthesis Of Diazonium Perfluoroalkyl(Aryl) Sufonimide (Pfsi) Zwitterions For Solid Acid Alkylation Catalysts, Husan Ahmad

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The final objective of this project is to create an environmentally friendly solid alkylation catalyst to replace the commercially available liquid acid catalysts, such as hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, which are used in the petroleum industry. My research target is to synthesize the diazonium PFSI zwitterions, which can be chemically grafted on the silica as the solid alkylation catalyst. A 4-steps synthesis is designed to prepare the diazonium PFSI zwitterions. The first two steps were successfully completed in the lab. The first one is to prepare the starting material of 4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide from an ammonolysis reaction between 4-nitrobenzene sulfonyl chloride …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Five New Tetrakis(N-Phenylacetamidato) Dirhodium(Ii) Amine Complexes And One Molybdenum Cofactor Described Crystallographically, Cragin K. Harris May 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of Five New Tetrakis(N-Phenylacetamidato) Dirhodium(Ii) Amine Complexes And One Molybdenum Cofactor Described Crystallographically, Cragin K. Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Six new crystal structures were determined using a Rigaku Mercurcy 375/MCCD(XtaLab mini) diffractometer. The structure of a molybdenum cofactor was solved resulting in an R1 (R1 = Σ ||Fo| - |Fc|| / Σ |Fo|) of 3.61% despite the presence of a disordered DMSO molecule. New Tetrakis(N-phenylacetamidato) Dirhodium(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Two 2,2-cis-[Rh2(NPhCOCH3)4]•(C3H4N2)x where x= 1 or 2 were successfully crystallized and solved with R1 values below 5%. Additional studies were conducted via NMR to observe formation of both products. Three potential catalysts were synthesized starting with 3,1-[Rh2(NPhCOCH3)4]. The resulting compounds were a …

Catalytic Methane Dissociative Chemisorption Over Pt(111): Surface Coverage Effects And Reaction Path Description, Inara Colon-Diaz Mar 2015

Catalytic Methane Dissociative Chemisorption Over Pt(111): Surface Coverage Effects And Reaction Path Description, Inara Colon-Diaz

Masters Theses

Density functional theory calculations were performed to study the dissociative chemisorption of methane over Pt(111) with the idea of finding the minimum energy path for the reaction and its dependence on surface coverage. Two approaches were used to evaluate this problem; first, we used different sizes of supercells (2x2, 3x3, 4x4) in order to decrease surface coverage in the absence of pre-adsorbed H and CH3 fragments to calculate the energy barriers of dissociation. The second approach uses a 4x4 unit cell and surface coverage is simulated by adding pre-absorbed H and CH3 fragments. Results for both approaches show …

Transition Metal Carbide (Tmc) Novel Materials For Novel Catalytic Applications, Svetlana Lagoykina Jan 2015

Transition Metal Carbide (Tmc) Novel Materials For Novel Catalytic Applications, Svetlana Lagoykina

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Transition metal carbides (TMC) constitute a diverse class of materials and traditionally have many technological applications. TMC became a subject of extensive research since 1973, when their platinum -like properties were discovered. They demonstrated high catalytical activity and selectivity in a variety of chemical reaction and have potential for some novel catalytic application.

This research is an effort to design new high effective, selective and stable bimetal or alkali promoted TMC catalyst. After extensive theoretical research a wide range of TMC, including bimetal and alkali promoted carbides, were synthesized by different methods. All solids were characterized by XRD and microscopy. …

I. Synthesis Of Ascarosides For Biological Evaluation And Ii. Development Of Visible Light-Promoted Selenofunctionalization And Grafting Of Aryl Iodides, Elizabeth Susan Conner Balapitiya Jan 2015

I. Synthesis Of Ascarosides For Biological Evaluation And Ii. Development Of Visible Light-Promoted Selenofunctionalization And Grafting Of Aryl Iodides, Elizabeth Susan Conner Balapitiya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on analog synthesis for biological evaluation and visible light promoted method development. Chapter 1 centers upon the synthesis of Caenorhabditis elegans dauer pheromone analogs. C. elegans is a nematode which, in times of environmental stress, enters a dauer stage. Two highly conserved pathways, which play important roles in some diseases in higher organisms, monitor dauer formation: TGF-β and IGF-1. Dauer formation is triggered by the nematode’s chemosensation of the dauer pheromone, consisting of a group of previously-isolated ascarosides. These compounds differ in chain length, saturation, terminal functionality of side chain, ω vs. ω-1 oxygenation and presence of …
