Eco-Interoception: What Plants, Fungi And Protista Have Taught My Body, Sara Riley Dotterer May 2023

Eco-Interoception: What Plants, Fungi And Protista Have Taught My Body, Sara Riley Dotterer

Art Theses and Dissertations

To me, ecology is the relational, full-body awareness that I am made up of and deeply connected to everything around me; and for better or worse, this is reciprocal. I form ecotones, an ecological transitional zone between two ecosystems, with the world around me. I use this ecotonal lens to blur binaries and dissolve boundaries between me and the world “outside my body.” During my Masters of Fine Arts at Southern Methodist University, I have continuously explored and represented the lives of various more-than-human species outside of my body, including plants, fungi and protista through an ecotonal lens. Although these …

The Kinetics And Cellular Imaging Of Multi-Color Fluorescent And Chemiluminescent Compounds, Bo Li Aug 2022

The Kinetics And Cellular Imaging Of Multi-Color Fluorescent And Chemiluminescent Compounds, Bo Li

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

A three-dimensional display is a useful method which can provide spatially accurate representations of high-resolution images with a 360° view. Therefore, it has potential to be applied widely in the medical area, entertainment industry and for military applications. According to the first-generation 3D digital light photoactivatable dye display (3D Light PAD), N-phenyl spirolactam rhodamine B was used as photoactivatable compound that could be switched from non-fluorescent to fluorescent using ultraviolet light. However, the detailed mechanism, how other rhodamine derivatives would perform in 3D Light PAD, and what other factors in this system could improve the imaging quality remained unclear. …

Application Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Chemistry, Niraj Verma Aug 2021

Application Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Chemistry, Niraj Verma

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

In the last four years, I have been exposed to various topics in scientific research under the supervision of Dr. Kraka in the CATCO group. Numerous involved chemistry projects were undertaken to gain an understanding of the basic laws of nature involving vibrational spectroscopy, molecular acidity, and catalysts based on transition metals for halogen chemistry. The insights from computational chemistry were then applied to model and predict various complicated problems in chemistry via artificial intelligence. With the help of classical artificial intelligence, the non-covalent interactions governing the properties of proteins and water properties were analyzed. Significant improvements were made in …

Imaging The Tumor Microenvironment Using 1,2-Dioxetane Chemiluminescence Agents, Lucas Ryan Dec 2020

Imaging The Tumor Microenvironment Using 1,2-Dioxetane Chemiluminescence Agents, Lucas Ryan

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

As complex organisms, animals and humans rely on a delicate interplay between many connected systems to maintain proper cellular and whole-body function. Oxygen regulation and homeostasis are vital for proper function in healthy cells, as are core components of aerobic metabolism and efficient ATP generation to supply our energy needs. Maintaining pH homeostasis is also of primary importance; cells maintain pH homeostasis through a host of active and passive transporters to maintain pH balance both inside and outside of the cell.

Events of uncontrolled cellular proliferation, also known as cancer, survive and thrive under conditions that perturb the delicate balance …

I. Non-Degradable Polysiloxane Networks For Controlled Release Applications, And Ii. Additive Free, Degradable Silyl-Ether Furyl-Maleimide Networks, Caleb M. Bunton May 2020

I. Non-Degradable Polysiloxane Networks For Controlled Release Applications, And Ii. Additive Free, Degradable Silyl-Ether Furyl-Maleimide Networks, Caleb M. Bunton

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

I. Two different series of non–degradable polysiloxane networks were prepared for the encapsulation and controlled release of a small molecule agent. For the first series, hydrosilylation was utilized to prepare networks of varying crosslink densities, as determined from swelling studies, from vinyl terminated and silylhydride functional poly(dimethyl)siloxanes. For the second series, the thiol-ene reaction was utilized to prepare networks of varying crosslink densities, as determined from swelling studies, from vinyl terminated and mercaptopropyl functional poly(dimethyl)siloxanes. Nile red dye was used as an encapsulated agent and dye release from each series of networks was measured using UV–vis spectroscopy to determine controllability …

Reversal Of P-Glycoprotein And Breast Cancer Resistance Protein Mediated Multidrug Resistance In Vitro Using In Silico Identified Novel Compounds, Amila Nanayakkara May 2019

Reversal Of P-Glycoprotein And Breast Cancer Resistance Protein Mediated Multidrug Resistance In Vitro Using In Silico Identified Novel Compounds, Amila Nanayakkara

Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major cause of chemotherapy failure. Overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) are two well-studied drug transporters which are associated with MDR. These two transporters also act as a major functional unit of the blood brain barrier to protect the brain from xenobiotics and toxins. Lack of clinically approved P-gp and BCRP inhibitors renders chemotherapy treatments of many MDR cancers ineffective and obstructs drug uptake into the brain.

Using computational methods, we have identified new compounds that inhibit P-gp (Brewer et al., Mol. Pharmacol. 2014). Several of …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji Dec 2018

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century has seen a dramatic acceleration in the evolution of bacterial resistance. Many classes of commercial antibiotics, including most current commercial β-lactams, were structurally optimized to counter 20th century pathogens. The carbapenems represent the most potent and broadest spectrum of the β-lactams, representing crucial last line agents to treat lifethreatening infections. While the 21st century has seen the appearance of carbapenem-resistant strains, the basic substitution pattern of commercial carbapenem antibiotics has remained constant, other than minor modifications at the C2 position. This research will investigate whether substitution at an atypical carbapenem position, the C5 position, can improve the …

Chemiluminescent Agents For In Vivo Imaging, Jian Cao Apr 2018

Chemiluminescent Agents For In Vivo Imaging, Jian Cao

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Chemiluminescence is the light production directly from a highly exothermic chemical reaction by generating electronically excited species, and the light will be generated upon relaxation to the ground state. We utilize this light as the readout to construct imaging agents for reactive species. Chemiluminescence as an imaging modality has many advantages compared with current widely used imaging modalities, such as fluorescence and bioluminescence. The main advantages are the elimination of extraneous light excitation or genetic modification, which are required for fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging. Therefore, chemiluminescence as a imaging modality holds great potential for in vivo imaging.
