Final State Distributions For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson Dec 1993

Final State Distributions For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Final state nim distributions are studied for electron capture from orientated circular Rydberg atoms. Strong orientation effects are found for all quantum numbers at collision speeds comparable to the electron orbital speed. Predominant population of large m states is observed when the plane of the circular orbit is nearly perpendicular to the incident direction of the projectile. The Ini distributions show structures due to quasi-Thomas scattering even at low relative collision velocities. © 1993 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu Dec 1993

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Adsorption equilibrium of benzene-p-xylene vapor mixture on silicalite is measured at 70^oC with a specially designed cyclic volumetric apparatus at pressure levels of 2.53 and 1.20 kPa. The isobaric isotherms are S-shaped, and selectivity curves at different pressures cross over; the p-xylene selectivity at 2.53 kPa is higher than that at 1.20 kPa over a certain composition range. The heterogeneous ideal adsorption solution (HIAS) model implemented on two patches qualitatively predicts these highly unusual behavior. The observed extraodinary phenomena are attributed to structural heterogeneity, a result of the tight-fit of sorbate molecules in silicalite …

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins Dec 1993

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated systematically the damage initiation damage progression, and failure modes of a ceramic matrix composite, Nicalon/CAS, when loaded in tension at elevated temperatures in the presence of air. A cross-ply lay-up, [0/90]2s, was studied. The primary means of analysis were stress-strain data taken during monotonic and incremental load tests and crack density assessments. Testing was conducted at room temperature 700°C, and 850°C. The stress-strain response was consistent for monotonic and incremental loading, except for a decrease in failure load at the elevated temperatures. Initial damage progression was also consistent, but the damage leading to failure and …

Experimental Analysis Of Heat Transfer Characteristics And Pressure Drop Through Screen Regenerative Heat Exchangers, Jeffrey L. Wiese Dec 1993

Experimental Analysis Of Heat Transfer Characteristics And Pressure Drop Through Screen Regenerative Heat Exchangers, Jeffrey L. Wiese

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effect on heat transfer and friction characteristics for screen regenerative heat exchangers with the screen thickness reduced by rolling. The experiments were performed on 250 and 325 mesh, 304 stainless steel screen using helium gas. Reynolds numbers, based on hydraulic radius, Re, were between 10 and 100. Both the Colburn factor, StPr2/3, and friction factor, f, decreased as the screen thickness was reduced. A correlation was found for predicting friction factor, f. The drag coefficient per screen remained nearly unchanged for thicknesses reduced not more than 30 percent. The decrease in Colburn factor was …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on the measurements of double differential cross sections, at zero degree, for the production of secondary electrons from the collision of 0, 6 MeV amu-1 Cu5+, I7+, Au11+, U13+, Cu19+, t23+ and Au29+ projectiles with H2 and He. The shapes and positions of the observed binary encounter electron peaks are compared with continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS), impulse approximation and classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations, as well as with predictions from an adiabatic resonant tunnelling model recently proposed by Fainstein and co-workers. The …

A Nonlinear Three-Dimensional Micromechanics Model For Fiber-Reinforced Laminated Composites, David D. Robertson Nov 1993

A Nonlinear Three-Dimensional Micromechanics Model For Fiber-Reinforced Laminated Composites, David D. Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a three-dimensional micromechanics model is developed. The present capabilities of the model include both unidirectional and laminated composite layups with various types of nonlinear analysis such as a thermoelastic-plastic analysis employing the Prandtl-Reuss flow relations, a thermoviscoplastic analysis using Bodner-Partom unified constitutive theory, and an interfacial damage progression scheme based on a statistical interfacial failure criteria. Such nonlinearities are critical factors during thermomechanical fatigue TMF loading of high temperature composites. Solutions were obtained and extensive comparisons performed with existing micromechanics models, finite element analysis, and experiment with excellent results. In addition, the analysis was developed to require …

Engineering Design Of An Anaerobic-Aerobic System To Treat Chlorophenols, Chih-Ju Jou Oct 1993

Engineering Design Of An Anaerobic-Aerobic System To Treat Chlorophenols, Chih-Ju Jou

Dissertations

The present work was aimed at determining the effect of the main operating parameters on the performance of an anaerobic-aerobic reactor system to degrade toxic chlorinated compounds. In previous work conducted in the Biological Treatment Lab at NJIT it was shown that this system is capable of achieving the complete degradation of chlorophenols. In that system, reductive dehalogenation took place in the first anaerobic reactor, which was followed by a second aerobic reactor in which the degradation products of the first reactor were mineralized. In the present work the role of a number of parameters that can have a significant …

Pyrolysis And Oxidation Of Chloromethanes Experiment And Modeling, Wenpin Ho Oct 1993

Pyrolysis And Oxidation Of Chloromethanes Experiment And Modeling, Wenpin Ho

Dissertations

An experimental study on pyrolysis and oxidation of CH2Cl2 and CH3Cl in oxygen/hydrogen or oxygen/methane mixtures and argon bath gas was carried out at 1 atmosphere pressure in tubular flow reactors. Degradation of CH2Cl2, or CH3CI, along with the formation and destruction of intermediate and final products was analyzed systematically over 873 to 1273°K, with average residence times of 0.2 to 2.0 seconds.

Thermochemical parameters: enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacities for many chloro-oxy-carbon products and intermediates are calculated using the techniques of group additivity and the THERM computer code. …

The Development Of A Senior Unit Operations Laboratory On The Supercritical Extraction Of Solid Naphthalene With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Ronald G. Gabbard Oct 1993

The Development Of A Senior Unit Operations Laboratory On The Supercritical Extraction Of Solid Naphthalene With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Ronald G. Gabbard

Theses

A Senior level Undergraduate Unit Operations Laboratory experiment was developed for the extraction of Naphthalene with supercritical Carbon Dioxide. A Supercritical Extraction Screening System purchased from Autoclave Engineers of Erie, Pennsylvania was modified slightly for use as the laboratory equipment. The experiment consists of extracting solid naphthalene from a sand bed in a fixed bed extractor and determining the mass transfer coefficient for the unit.

The lab has been designed to allow the students to develop their own experimental plan without much direct input. The experimental outline provided for the students primarily focuses on information needed for safe and proper …

Agitation Requirements For Complete Liquid Dispersion In Liquid-Liquid-Gas Systems, Emad Ahmad Abu-Hakmeh Oct 1993

Agitation Requirements For Complete Liquid Dispersion In Liquid-Liquid-Gas Systems, Emad Ahmad Abu-Hakmeh

Theses

A number of studies have been published in the literature on the determination of the agitation intensity at which two immiscible liquids become completely dispersed in mechanically agitated vessels. However, no information is currently available on the agitation intensity required for the complete dispersion of two liquids in the presence of an additional gas phase. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to experimentally determine the minimum agitation speed for complete liquid-liquid dispersion, Ncd, in liquid-liquid-gas systems as a function of gas flow rate, impeller type, impeller size, and impeller off-bottom clearance. The minimum agitation speed was …

Polymerization-Induced Phase-Separation In A Liquid-Crystal-Polymer Mixture, J. Y, Kim, C. H. Cho, P. Palffy-Muhoray, M. Mustafa, Thein Kyu Oct 1993

Polymerization-Induced Phase-Separation In A Liquid-Crystal-Polymer Mixture, J. Y, Kim, C. H. Cho, P. Palffy-Muhoray, M. Mustafa, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We have used light scattering to study the kinetics of polymerization-induced phase separation in a liquid-crystal-polymer mixture. The evolution of the structure factor is compared with scaling predictions for thermally quenched systems. We have also observed a cascading phenomenon where phase separated domains become unstable and undergo phase separation for a second time.
