An Effective Calculation Procedure For Two-Phase Equilibria In Multireaction Systems, Gustavo A. Iglesias-Silva, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Kenneth R. Hall

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

In this work, we present amethod for the calculation of two-phase equilibria in multireaction systems. The procedure uses a transformed composition variable in the orthogonal derivatives of the Gibbs function and the tangent plane equation to form a system of non-linear equations. We solve this system with a Newton–Raphson method and our initialization procedure uses results fromthe reactive stability analysis and the reactive equal area rule. With this initialization strategy, convergence occurs with only a few iterations in the numerical method. Several examples with multiple chemical reactions demonstrate the performance of our approach.

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

This paper introduces an alternative method for performing flash calculations in reacting systems, which has been developed using the theory of variable transformation of Ung and Doherty (1995). We use a simultaneous equation solving approach to perform two phase equilibrium calculations in chemically reactive systems. The numerical performance of proposed method is tested using several cases of study and our results show that it is efficient and generally can converge to the equilibrium compositions.

Recycling Poultry Feathers For Pb Removal From Wastewater: Kinetic And Equilibrium Studies, Guadalupe De La Rosa, Hilda Elizabeth Reynel-Avila, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Irene Cano-Rodriguez, Carlos Velasco-Santos, Ana Laura Martínez-Hernández Jan 2008

Recycling Poultry Feathers For Pb Removal From Wastewater: Kinetic And Equilibrium Studies, Guadalupe De La Rosa, Hilda Elizabeth Reynel-Avila, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Irene Cano-Rodriguez, Carlos Velasco-Santos, Ana Laura Martínez-Hernández

Chicken feathers were used as biosorbent for Pb removal from aqueous solution. In this paper, the kinetics and equilibrium studies at several pH, temperature, and metal concentration values are reported. For tested conditions, the Pb sorption capacity of this poultry waste ranged from 0.8 to 8.3 mg/g. Optimal conditions for Pb removal by chicken feathers have been identified. Pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order equations were used to analyze the experimental data. In addition, the sorption isotherms were fitted to classical Langmuir and Freundlich models. Finally, thermodynamic parameters for the sorption process have been determined. In summary, the results showed that …

Design And Control Properties Of Arrangements For Distillation Of Four Component Mixtures Using Less Than N-1 Columns, D.M. Méndez-Valencia, M. Vázquez-Ojeda, J.G. Segovia-Hernández, A. Bonilla-Petriciolet Jan 2008

Design And Control Properties Of Arrangements For Distillation Of Four Component Mixtures Using Less Than N-1 Columns, D.M. Méndez-Valencia, M. Vázquez-Ojeda, J.G. Segovia-Hernández, A. Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

The design and study of dynamic properties of distillation sequences using side-stream columns with less than N-1 columns for separation of four-component mixtures were studied. Total annual cost and dynamic properties (using singular value decomposition) were used to compare properties of arrangements with less than N-1 columns to base cases with three columns (conventional case). Quaternary feeds containing four hydrocarbons were analyzed. For systems with low concentrations of one component in the feed, side-stream cascades often show significantly lower operating, capital costs and best dynamic properties compared to the base cases. Low purity requirements also favor side-stream cascades. Some rules …

Aislamiento De Capsaicinoides Directamente Del Fruto De Capsicum, Juan Carlos Tapia-Picazo, Eleazar Escamilla-Silva, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet Jan 2008

Aislamiento De Capsaicinoides Directamente Del Fruto De Capsicum, Juan Carlos Tapia-Picazo, Eleazar Escamilla-Silva, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

An experimental methodology is presented at laboratory level to optimize the capsaicinoids extraction directly from the capsicum fruit. The experimental tool and tests performed allow their scaling at pilot level, besides that they show in order of magnitude the impact of the variables on the capsaicinoids recovery. A technique based on liquid chromatography was used to determine the capsaicinoids content extracted in the different tests performed. For the mixture solvent-capsaicinoids identified as the optimum in the extraction stage, purification conditions at pilot level were obtained using a Karr-reciprocating extraction column based on the previous work developed by Tapia et al. …

Energy-Efficient Complex Distillation Sequences: Control Properties, Salvador Robles-Zapiain, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Rafael Maya-Yescas Jan 2008

Energy-Efficient Complex Distillation Sequences: Control Properties, Salvador Robles-Zapiain, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Rafael Maya-Yescas

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Four thermally coupled distillation systems were designed for the separation of five-component mixtures (the light-ends separation section of a crude distillation plant); their steady-state design was obtained by starting from a conventional distillation sequence and then optimizing for minimum energy consumption. The thermally coupled distillation systems were compared to sequence based on conventional columns design. Comparison was based on controllability properties under open and closed loop operation, following the dynamic behaviour after common industrial operating disturbances. Simulation results were analyzed by the singular value decomposition technique and with the performance examination of elimination of feed disturbances using PI controllers. It …

Gibbs Energy Minimization Using Simulated Annealing For Two-Phase Equilibrium Calculations In Reactive Systems, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Ulises I. Bravo-Sánchez, Florianne Castillo-Borja, Sergio Fraustro-Hernández, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández Jan 2008

Gibbs Energy Minimization Using Simulated Annealing For Two-Phase Equilibrium Calculations In Reactive Systems, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Ulises I. Bravo-Sánchez, Florianne Castillo-Borja, Sergio Fraustro-Hernández, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Phase equilibrium calculations in systems subject to chemical reactions are involved in the design, synthesis and optimization of reactive separation processes. Until now, several methods have been developed to perform simultaneously physical and chemical equilibrium calculations. However, published methods may face numerical difficulties such as variable initialization dependence, divergence and convergence to trivial solutions or unstable equilibrium states. Besides, these methods generally use conventional composition variables and reactions extents as unknowns which directly affect the numerical implementation, reliability and efficiency of solving strategies. The objective of this work is to introduce and test an alternative approach to perform Gibbs energy …
