Cyclic Sequential Adsorption Desorption/Thermal-Catalytic Oxidation Of Volatile Organic Compounds: Material Development, Process Advancement/Improvement, And Numerical Modeling, Simulation And Optimization, Busuyi Ojo Adebayo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of useful organic chemicals but when emitted have contributed to air pollution. They affect human health, cause environmental degradation and contaminate our waters and soils, so they need to be controlled. When they exist in dilute concentrations, abatement becomes challenging, thus requiring advanced abatement methods, e.g., sequential adsorption desorption/thermal-catalytic oxidation process. The overall goal of this research was to abate dilute streams of VOCs via the process. The specific objectives were to 1) develop novel adsorbent/catalyst dual-function materials (DFMs) for the process, 2) improve the operability of a one-bed-one-column reactor configuration for the …

3d-Printed Adsorbents For Gas Separations: A Material Development, Kinetic Assessment, And Process Performance Investigation, Shane Lawson Jan 2021

3d-Printed Adsorbents For Gas Separations: A Material Development, Kinetic Assessment, And Process Performance Investigation, Shane Lawson

Doctoral Dissertations

“Adsorbent materials are promising for various gas purification processes, however, forming them into structured contactors is paramount in enhancing mass transfer properties and reducing pressure losses. In this research, various adsorbents were engineered into structured contactors with 3D printing. The overall goal of this research was to improve the formulation methods of 3D-printed adsorbents and understand their performances in gas separation processes. The specific objectives were to 1) develop new adsorbent 3D-printing strategies, 2) understand the kinetic properties of printed adsorbent monoliths, and 3) assess their process performances. Objective one was addressed by developing five 3D printing techniques: i) oxide …

Polymeric Nanoparticle As A New Platform For High Removal Of Endotoxins From Biopharmaceutical Solutions, Sidharth Razdan Jan 2020

Polymeric Nanoparticle As A New Platform For High Removal Of Endotoxins From Biopharmaceutical Solutions, Sidharth Razdan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Presently, approximately one-third of all biopharmaceutical drugs are derived from biological sources like gram-negative bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria like E.coli are much cheaper to cultivate and provide higher biotherapeutic yield compared to mammalian cells. On extracting the useful biotherapeutics from the gram-negative bacterial cells (E.coli), endotoxin present in the bacteria is released in the surrounding media thus contaminating the lifesaving biotherapeutics. Application of the endotoxin-contaminated therapeutics to humans or animals can cause serious health issues like septic shock, tissue injury and ultimately death. Hence, thorough purification of biotherapeutics before parenteral application is necessary. Although there are multiple methods for …

Atomic Layer Deposition Prepared Nanostructured Materials For Various Catalytic Reactions, Xiaofeng Wang Jan 2018

Atomic Layer Deposition Prepared Nanostructured Materials For Various Catalytic Reactions, Xiaofeng Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been widely used for thin film coating and metal nanoparticles (NPs) preparation. In this report, the applications of ALD prepared nanostructured materials in catalysis were examined.

Highly dispersed Pt monometallic catalysts with different substrates and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported Pt-Co bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by ALD for selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols (UA). Pt/MWCNTs showed the highest selectivity of UA in selective hydrogenation of citral, as compared to Pt/SiO2, Pt/ALD-Al2O3, and Pt/γ-Al2O3. After adding Co, the highest selectivity was achieved …

Synthesis And Comprehensive Studies Of Nanogels For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Jiaming Geng Jan 2018

Synthesis And Comprehensive Studies Of Nanogels For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Jiaming Geng

Doctoral Dissertations

“Nanomaterials have been developed and applied for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in oil industry. Among the developed nanomaterials, nano-sized crosslinked polymeric gel particles (nanogels) have shown the potential in improving both the macro- and micro-displacing efficiency. This dissertation focuses on the synthesis and the potential EOR mechanisms of nanogels. Nanogels with positive, negative, and neutral charges were synthesized through suspension polymerization. The morphology, size distribution, and zeta potential of nanogels were elucidated by corresponding technologies, such as scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The ability of nanogels in oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) reduction and oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion stabilization was …

Functional Clay Nanotubes And Composites, Yafei Zhao Apr 2015

Functional Clay Nanotubes And Composites, Yafei Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

Tubular nanomaterials and their composites have been extensively studied in recent years in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and biomedicine. Carbon nanotube is the most commonly studied tubular nanomaterial; however, toxicity and high cost make it less attractive in industry and thus restricts its applications. Halloysite nanotubes, which are available in abundance in the United States as well as in other countries around the world, is a low-cost, unique and versatile aluminosilicate mineral with a chemical formula of Al4Si4O10(OH)8·nH2O. Basically, the halloysite tube diameter is around 50 nm and the length varies with different locations ranging from 0.4-1.5 μm. …

Adsorption And Diffusion Of Gases In Nano-Porous Materials, Nethika Sahani Suraweera Dec 2013

Adsorption And Diffusion Of Gases In Nano-Porous Materials, Nethika Sahani Suraweera

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, a systematic computational study directed toward developing a molecular-level understanding of gas adsorption and diffusion characteristics in nano-porous materials is presented. Two different types of porous adsorbents were studied, one crystalline and the other amorphous. Physisorption and diffusion of hydrogen in ten iso-reticular metal-organic frameworks (IRMOFs) were investigated. A set of nine adsorbents taken from a class of novel, amorphous nano-porous materials composed of spherosilicate building blocks and isolated metal sites was also studied, with attention paid to the adsorptive and diffusive behavior of hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide and their binary mixtures. Both classes of materials were …

Molecular Simulations Of Adsorption And Diffusion In Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Ruichang Xiong May 2010

Molecular Simulations Of Adsorption And Diffusion In Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Ruichang Xiong

Doctoral Dissertations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of nanoporous materials that have received great interest since they were first synthesized in the late 1990s. Practical applications of MOFs are continuously being discovered as a better understanding of the properties of materials adsorbed within the nanopores of MOFs emerges. One such potential application is as a component of an explosive-sensing system. Another potential application is for hydrogen storage.

This work is focused on tailoring MOFs to adsorb/desorb the explosive, RDX. Classical grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations have been performed to calculate adsorption isotherms and self-diffusivities of …
