Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva
Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories. This is also an effort in line with the current metadata cataloging trend of moving from item by item cataloging to batch processing of metadata, repurposing of metadata between different systems and communities, and providing value-added data services to students and …
Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight
Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight
Librarian Publications & Presentations
Provides an introduction to linked data considering ways to visualize and get a better understanding of this relatively new concept. Linked data is a different way for our bibliographic data to interact with the data available on the Web.. It will hopefully enhance the information we already provide, make it easier for us to provide that information and allow libraries to integrate themselves better with other information sources on the web.

RDA (Resources Description and Access) is a new way to support resource discovery focusing on user tasks in the digital age. RDA, the new cataloguing guidelines have been developed, tested and are set to be implemented in March 2013. As we shift away from AACR2 preparation for training is underway and cataloguing records created using the new rules will start to appear in your library catalogues. F. Tim Knight and Darren J. Furey guide you through the changes you can expect to see including an overview of FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) the conceptual model that underlies the structure …

Open data is becoming increasingly important in research. While individual researchers are slowly becoming aware of the value, funding agencies are taking the lead by requiring data be made available, and also by requiring data management plans to ensure the data is available in a useable form. Some journals also require that data be made available. However, in most cases, “available upon request” is considered sufficient. We describe a number of historical examples of data use and discovery, then describe two current test cases at the University of New Mexico. The lessons learned suggest that an instituional data services program …
