Selecting a mode for entering or expanding in a foreign market is a crucial strategic decision for an international firm. This article identifies and compares the most influential factors that affect the international modes of entry and expansion decisions of US and Japanese firms. Using mail surveys, this is one of the first studies on this subject to collect data from top executives in both Japan and the USA. Findings reveal that the Japanese are particularly sensitive to external risk and other target market factors. For Americans, company factors, such as international experience, appear to be most important when selecting …

Manufacturing has gained over the last years in attention as a tool to create competitive advantage. For four years now a survey has been carried out by a research team at Insead to build a database on the manufacturing strategies as they are defined and implemented by large European companies. Over the past 4 years research teams from INSEAD (Fontainebleau), Boston University and Waseda University (Tokyo) have administered a yearly survey on the manufacturing strategy of the large manufacturers of the three industrialized regions of the world. In this paper the results for the 1986 survey are compared. One of the most striking results of that year’s survey is the emphasis some of the more advanced manufacturers put on their efforts to overcome the trade-off between flexibility and cost efficiency. Current firm performance is not only measured by economic term (single bottom line) but also by social and environmental (triple bottom line). Purposes of this research are analyzing of TBL disclosure and influences factors, by using sample of companies in Indonesia and Japan. This paper investigates Triple Bottom Line (TBL) disclosure of 50 of the largest Indonesian and Japanese companies by using secondary data. Twenty two disclosure criteria were developed for each of the TBL disclosure areas: economic, social, and enviromental. This article examines how two types of Japanese business group networks impact on firm innovation and global learning. Both the general network and Japanese business group literature have emphasized the important role this kind of tightly knit and stable network plays in facilitating the innovation of firms. Yet little is known of the different effects of the two types of business groups on innovation: horizontal versus vertical. The Co-Evolution Of International Business Connections And Domestic Technological Capabilities: Lessons From The Japanese Catch-Up Experience, John Cantwell, Yanli Zhang

We undertake an examination of the technological catch-up experiences of the leading Japanese industrial firms in the twentieth century, based on both qualitative and quantitative historical evidence. We argue that the international business connections of Japanese firms had a strong influence on the industrial composition of the catch-up of their technological capabilities, and that in turn that catch-up has led to a change in the nature and form of their international business connections. We speculate on some similarities and differences with the current catchup of firms in emerging market economies.

Agricultural adviser Gil George, the author of this article, returned earlier this year from 21/2 years' study in Japan, where he gained a Diploma in Japanese Language from the Osaka Institute of Foreign Studies and a Master's Degree in Economics from Hitotsubashi University, one of Japan's foremost economic institutions.

In Japan he examined the post-war development of the Japanese agricultural co-operative movement, and some aspects of marketing of agricultural products.
