Anecdotal data affirms that companies applying Lean Six Sigma in their operations not only deliver higher quality products and services, but also obtain superior financial results. The goal of this research was to empirically verify anecdotal data. The study proposed to analyze a group of publicly traded manufacturing companies with the intent of verifying if a correlation exists between companies being lean and the attainment of superior returns on investments. The researcher performed a series of statistical tests comparing key Financial Performance Indicators (FPI) extracted from annual reports (10-K) from a large pool of companies. The outcome of this study …

Evaluating Online Health Information: Beyond Readability Formulas, Gondy Leroy, Stephen Helmreich, James Cowie, Trudi Miller '08, Wei Zheng '08

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Although understanding health information is important, the texts provided are often difficult to understand. There are formulas to measure readability levels, but there is little understanding of how linguistic structures contribute to these difficulties. We are developing a toolkit of linguistic metrics that are validated with representative users and can be measured automatically. In this study, we provide an overview of our corpus and how readability differs by topic and source. We compare two documents for three groups of linguistic metrics. We report on a user study evaluating one of the differentiating metrics: the percentage of function words in a …

Strategic Security As A New Academic Discipline, Sheldon Greaves, Ph.D Nov 2008

Strategic Security As A New Academic Discipline, Sheldon Greaves, Ph.D

Journal of Strategic Security

The creation of Henley-Putnam University was an effort to create an academic institution for the purpose of offering degree programs in intelligence management, counterterrorism, and personal protection; subjects that arguably did not exist as academic disciplines when the school was conceived. The experience of two of the co-founders of the school, Nirmalya Bhowmick and Dr. Michael Corcoran, indicated that the training of officers tasked with vital security and intelligence work was carried out by partnering young officers with a training officer to help the new officer learn on the job. The effectiveness of this training depended to a great extent …

Short Takes: Intelligence-Service Psychology: A German Perspective, Sven Max Litzcke, Helmut Müller-Enbergs Nov 2008

Short Takes: Intelligence-Service Psychology: A German Perspective, Sven Max Litzcke, Helmut Müller-Enbergs

Journal of Strategic Security

To date, four German volumes in the series "Intelligence-Service Psychology" (Nachrichtendienstpsychologie) have been published. These volumes generated interest in both the German and non-German speaking communities. It was therefore decided to translate some of the basic articles of the series into English (Litzcke, Müller-Enbergs & Ungerer, 2008), making them accessible to a wider range of readers. This article contains abbreviated versions of the articles in the book.

Lost In Translation: Organizational Behavior Constructs Across Cultures – Hope As An Example, Bill Provaznik Oct 2008

Lost In Translation: Organizational Behavior Constructs Across Cultures – Hope As An Example, Bill Provaznik

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper examines the differences in the conception of the Positive Organizational Behavioral construct of hope between a strongly individualistic culture like the United States, and strongly collectivistic cultures like China, the Philippines and Vietnam. The differences are explained by the varying conceptualizations of autonomy, interconnectedness and self between the two cultures. The insight from this comparison should serve both to help accommodate cultural level differences among employees as well as offer a further step in the refinement of the application of individualist/collectivist interpretations to western based managerial and psychological models as well as practices.

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan Aug 2008

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan

DLPS Faculty Publications

China, the most populous country in the world, is also a nation of great diversity. In addition to the majority population of Han Chinese, there are some 55 officially recognized national minorities--including Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, Zhuang, Dai, and Gaoshan. The folklore of these minorities is often obscure and difficult to find in the English-speaking world, as is information about the people, their cultural histories, and their traditional customs. This book fills a gap by offering more than 50 representative folktales from China's minorities, as well as background information on each of the ethnic groups.

Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence And Individual Workplace Performance, Tina Bauer Goldsmith Aug 2008

Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence And Individual Workplace Performance, Tina Bauer Goldsmith

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The intelligence quotients for intellectual ability or expertise in work environments are no longer leading factors in being hired or promoted (Cherniss & Goleman, 2001; Wolff, Druskat, Koman, & Messer, 2006). More recently, what appears to matter more importantly is competence for effective people management skills (Ashkanasy & Dashborough, 2003; Diggins, 2004; Douglas, Frink, & Ferris, 2004; Silberman, 2001; Wolff et al., 2006). One research question and five hypotheses were generated for the study to gain a better understanding of the relationships and factors contributing to emotional intelligence and individual workplace performance, and to elucidate which of the two emotional …

Imsa360: Summer 2008, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Often when I speak to parents, students and educators, I share one of my core beliefs: there is no ceiling on human potential. Though perhaps a bit overstated, as I fully realize my limited singing ability elicits monumental groans and sends animals scurrying for cover, it is true that often when we think an individual has reached his or her “potential,” we are astounded by a new accomplishment. As I look back on my first year as IMSA’s second president, I am humbled and amazed by IMSA’s truly unlimited potential for advancing the human condition and living into our aspiration …

Examining Differential Item Functioning Of The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Across Eight Countries (In Press), Lisa E. Baranik, Adam W. Meade, Chad E. Lakey, Charles E. Lance, Changya Hu, Wei Hua, Alex Michalos

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examined the differential item functioning (DIF) of Rosenberg's (1965) Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and compared scores from U.S. participants with those from 7 other countries: Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Singapore, and Taiwan. Results indicate that DIF was present in all comparisons. Moreover, controlling for latent self-esteem, participants from individualistic countries had an easier time reporting high self-esteem on self-competence-related items, whereas participants from communal countries had an easier time reporting high self-esteem on self-liking items (Tafarodi & Milne, 2002). After adjusting for DIF, we found larger mean self-esteem differences between the countries than observed scores initially indicated. …

A Sacramental Viewing Of 'Atonement': The Movie, Vaughan S. Roberts

Vaughan S Roberts

The movie version of Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement, directed by Joe Wright, raises interesting questions about implicit sacraments in films. This presentation explores how the film of Atonement develops and introduces Christian themes into the storyline and the way in which this might reflect more widely upon the place of Christianity in a secular world. A version was written up for the journal Implicit Religion and can be found here https://www.equinoxpub.com/journals/index.php/IR/article/view/6300

Y And How: Strategies For Reaching The Elusive Generation Y Consumer, Angela Hughes May 2008

Y And How: Strategies For Reaching The Elusive Generation Y Consumer, Angela Hughes

Honors College Theses

Generation Y is poised to take over as the largest and most lucrative consumer group for marketers, a position that has long been held by the Baby Boomer generation. Generation Y, however, differs greatly from the Baby Boomers in their consumer behavior. This will lead marketers to have to find new and innovative ways to market to this large market. In finding new ways to market to this generation, marketers must have a clear and distinct understanding of who they are trying to reach. While this information used to be readily available through the use of demographics, since the members …

Perceptions Of Emotional Intelligence Preparation And Industry Expectations For Utah State University Mba Graduates, Arthur D. Waller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study sought to determine whether an MBA degree from Utah State University (USU) was meeting the emotional intelligence (EI) needs of the workplace from the perception of its graduates. This research assessed perception of EI skills with a researcher-designed instrument that consisted of a 22-question survey that was e-mailed to USU students who completed an MBA between 2000 and 2006. The survey questionnaire given to MBA graduates was titled Assessment of Emotional Intelligence and was divided into three distinct parts. The first category (questions 1-10) had to do with industry expectations as perceived by MBA graduates. The second category …

More Evidence On The Value Of Chinese Workers’ Psychological Capital: A Potentially Unlimited Competitive Resource?, Fred Luthans, James Avey, Rachel Clapp-Smith, Weixing Li

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

As China continues its unprecedented economic growth and emergence as a world power, new solutions must be forthcoming to meet the accompanying challenges. We propose a positive approach to Chinese HRM that recognizes, develops and manages the psychological capital (PsyCap) of workers. After providing a brief overview of hope, efficacy, optimism, resilience and overall PsyCap in today’s Chinese context, the results of a follow-up study provide further evidence that the PsyCap of Chinese workers is related to their performance. The implications that this evidencebased value of Chinese workers’ psychological capital has for China now and into the future concludes this …

Demystifying The Legend Of Resistance To Change, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Arash Golnam Apr 2008

Demystifying The Legend Of Resistance To Change, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Arash Golnam

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nothing is permanent except change. Many authors stress that the reason for the failure of many change initiatives can be found in resistance to change. Resistance to change introduces costs and delays into the change process that are difficult to anticipate but must be taken into consideration. Undoubtedly the resistance to change is key topic in change management and should be seriously considered to help the organization achieve advantages of the transformation. Considering the importance of resistance to change, this paper aims to delve deeper in this field through theoretical exposition of the concept, elaborating more on the literature involving …

An Ontology Centric Architecture For Mediating Interactions In Semantic Web-Based E-Commerce Environments, Manoj Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Information freely generated, widely distributed and openly interpreted is a rich source of creative energy in the digital age that we live in. As we move further into this irrevocable relationship with self-growing and actively proliferating information spaces, we are also finding ourselves overwhelmed, disheartened and powerless in the presence of so much information. We are at a point where, without domain familiarity or expert guidance, sifting through the copious volumes of information to find relevance quickly turns into a mundane task often requiring enormous patience. The realization of accomplishment soon turns into a matter of extensive cognitive load, serendipity …
