Information And Computer Technology Security: Furthering The Research Agenda, Karin Garrety, M Barrett
Information And Computer Technology Security: Furthering The Research Agenda, Karin Garrety, M Barrett
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Despite the development of advanced technical devices and procedures, the information held in computer systems remains vulnerable to attack and/or inadvertent mishandling, resulting in security breaches. Increasingly, researchers and practitioners are recognising that information security is not merely a technical issue, but is heavily influenced by social and cultural factors. This paper argues that post-cognitivist approaches to human computer interaction, which focus on situated reasoning and the contextual, relational aspects of computer-mediated activities and interactions, provide a promising set of concepts with which to explore non-technical users’ everyday security practices and beliefs. We review the limited research that has been …

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a rapidly growing threat to today’s Internet. Significant works have been done in this field. It is vital to incorporate the latest development of technology into academic programs to provide training and education to students and professionals.
In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a senior design project named DDoS Attack, Detection and Defense Simulation. We aim to build a test bed and configure the network environment to simulate “real-world” DDoS attack, detection and defense. We study several DDoS attack tools, as well as some commonly-used DDoS detection and defense software. We …

In this paper we identify a major area of research as a topic for next generation data mining. The research effort in the last decade on privacy preserving data mining has resulted in the development of numerous algorithms. However, most of the existing research has not been applied in any particular application context. Hence it is unclear whether the current algorithms are directly applicable in any particular problem context. In this paper we identify a significant application context that not only requires protection of privacy but also sophisticated data analysis. The area in question is supply chain management, arguably one …

Factors Affecting Retailer Adoption Of The Internet In Ireland, Roisin Vize, Joseph Coughlan, Aileen Kennedy
Conference papers
To date, most of the commentary on the impact of the Internet on retailing in Ireland has been anecdotal and there is a paucity of academic empirical research examining the factors affecting Internet adoption by retailers in Ireland. The primary aims of this research are to identify the key factors perceived as being influential in determining the resultant level of adoption among traditional retailers in Ireland and to examine the extent and level of its’ adoption in the Irish retail sector. This paper represents the results from an exploratory investigation employing multiple case studies as the first of a two-stage …

Improving Corporate Governance : Character Education As A Supplement To Corporate Ethics Training, Richard L. Muney
Improving Corporate Governance : Character Education As A Supplement To Corporate Ethics Training, Richard L. Muney
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis explores the hypothesis that ethics training for corporate personnel will significantly increase ethical behavior and thereby significantly reduce the incidence of corporate malfeasance.
For over 100 years the federal government has been trying to curb malfeasance by managers of public corporations and their boards of directors. This thesis examines the history of that legislation and those regulatory efforts, concluding that these legislative and regulatory attempts have met with varying degrees of success, but, on balance, that success has been transitory at best. It also comes to the conclusion that corporate training programs in ethics, in the absence of …

In Pursuit Of An Aptitude Test For Potential Cyberspace Warriors, Tiffiny S. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force has officially assumed the cyberspace mission. To perform this mission well, it is important to employ personnel who have the necessary skill sets and motivation to work in a cyberspace environment. The first step in employing the right people is to screen all possible candidates and select those with an aptitude for acquiring the skill sets and with the motivation to perform this work. This thesis attempts to determine the necessary skills and motivations to perform the cyberspace mission and recommends a screening process to select the candidates with the highest probability for success. Since this mission …

Explaining Intention To Use An Information Technology Innovation: An Empirical Comparison Of The Perceived Characteristics Of Innovating And Technology Acceptance Models, Sam Jebeile, Robert Reeve
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
This study examines the issue of technology acceptance in a multi-campus secondary college in Sydney, Australia. Seventy-five teachers across two campuses were surveyed as to their perceptions regarding technology acceptance. Regression analysis was used to compare the explanatory power of the perceived characteristics of innovating model (PCIM), and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Both models explained a substantial amount of variation in technology acceptance. However, our findings suggest that it is preferable to use the PCIM, rather than the TAM, to explain intention to use an information technology innovation. Implications for both future research and practice are discussed.

The Relationship Of Selected Personal Characteristics Of E-Faculty To Their Perceived Technological Knowledge, Myriah Christin Clark
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the technological development of e-faculty at five randomly selected Carnegie classified (2006) Doctorate-Granting Research Universities with very high research activity (RU/VH) in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). The majority of e-faculty report that they do not have release time/reduced teaching load for preparing web-based materials/courses, nor do they have graduate or teaching assistants available for assisting with web-based learning. However, a little over half of them reported having instructional designers or curriculum developers to help with the designing of web-based materials and a large majority reported having adequate institutional research resources (library holdings that are accessible …

Improving The Judicial System To Handle Computer Crime, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan
Improving The Judicial System To Handle Computer Crime, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper asked professionals in the legal system to evaluate the current state and effectiveness of laws to identify and deter computer crime. Responses were evaluated with a formal structural equation model. The results generally show that legal professionals believe potential jurors have minimal knowledge of computer crime issues. More importantly, they also believe that judges have little knowledge or experience. A similar lack of knowledge by defense attorneys indicates that it could be difficult for a person accused of computer related infractions to find adequate representation. On the other hand, more experienced participants do not believe computer laws present …
