Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani Dec 2004

Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani

Faculty Scholarship

This paper contributes to the unresolved issue regarding the effect of economic integration on environmental policymaking. In particular, we discuss the joint impact of trade openness and political stability on environmental policymaking. Our theory predicts that the effect of trade integration on environmental policy is conditional on the degree of political stability. Trade integration affects the stringency of environmental policies due to changes in industry bribery behavior, and the effect is conditional on the degree of political stability. The empirical findings support the theory and are robust to alternative specifications. The stringency enhancing effect on environmental policy of trade integration …

Silence, Procrustes And Colonization: A Response To Clegg Et Al.'S 'Noise, Parasites And Translation: Theory And Practice In Management Consulting', Andrew Sturdy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham, Karen Handley Sep 2004

Silence, Procrustes And Colonization: A Response To Clegg Et Al.'S 'Noise, Parasites And Translation: Theory And Practice In Management Consulting', Andrew Sturdy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham, Karen Handley

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The article by Clegg, Kornberger and Rhodes in March 2004’s issue of Management Learning is a refreshing and welcome contribution to an otherwise largely sterile, atheoretical and overly prescriptive literature on management consulting. However, and sadly, it stops very short of offering a critique and therefore generating substantially novel insights into this phenomenon. Also, and despite the authors’ assertions otherwise, it ends up celebrating consultancy as a privileged arena in achieving what is described as radical change, but what is, in effect, typically a reinforcement of existing power relations and of managerialism and its associated language. This response comes from a …

Gendering The "Turk" In Management Literature From Postcolonial Perspectives, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan Jul 2004

Gendering The "Turk" In Management Literature From Postcolonial Perspectives, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan

Banu Ozkazanc-Pan

In this paper, I provide an analytic framework based on postcolonial theories for addressing gender within management and organization literatures. Specifically, this paper offers a ‘non-Western’ theoretical intervention into ‘Western’ management texts that address gender and organizational issues as they relate to non-Western people and cultures. In order to highlight the contributions of postcolonial theories to feminist concerns around gender within management and organization literatures, in this paper, I do the following: Firstly, I discuss concerns raised by ‘Third World’ feminist scholars in regards to Western feminist theories as they relate to gender and knowledge production. Secondly, I highlight the …

Consumer Subjectivity In The Age Of Internet: The Radical Concept Of Marketing Control Through Customer Relationship Management, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia Jul 2004

Consumer Subjectivity In The Age Of Internet: The Radical Concept Of Marketing Control Through Customer Relationship Management, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a poststructuralist analysis of customer database technology. This approach allows us to regard customer databases as configurations of language that produce new and significant discursive effects. In particular, we focus on the role of databases and related technologies such as customer relationship management (CRM) in the discursive construction of both customers and customer relationships. First, we argue that organizations become the authors of customer identities, using the language of the database to configure customer representation. From this perspective, we can see the radical innovation that the customer database brings to the organizational construction of its …

An Experimental Examination Of Equivalence Failures In Multi-Cultural Comparative Research, F. Mark Case Jul 2004

An Experimental Examination Of Equivalence Failures In Multi-Cultural Comparative Research, F. Mark Case

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

As the global economy integrates, there is an increased need to understand international business phenomena. This forces a reliance upon multi-cultural marketing research, which is evidenced by a marked increase in international studies, particularly multi-cultural comparative research (Sin, Cheung & Lee 1999). Central to the usefulness of this research is the question of the validity and comparability of results, which is greatly affected by a property known as equivalence of test instruments; or the degree to which the scales and the items in them are seen to be the same across cultures.

To date, no research exists that approaches the …

Assessing Advanced Manufacturing Technologies: A New Approach Using The Analytic Network Process, Ozden Bayazit Jun 2004

Assessing Advanced Manufacturing Technologies: A New Approach Using The Analytic Network Process, Ozden Bayazit

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper illustrates an application of the Analytic Network Process (ANP) to the decision by a tractor manufacturing company to implement flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The ANP is a methodology recently introduced by Thomas L Saaty for multiple criteria problems where there is feedback and interdependence among decision attributes and alternatives. We determined the factors that affect the level of implementation of FMS by doing literature searches and further refined those factors through decision-making team's opinion. We ended up with 28 factors. The results of our decision model show that the company should not implement FMS with an overall priority …

An Experimental Investigation Of Productivity Stratification And Knowledge Transfer In An Electronically Mediated Environment, Jachin Sakamoto Mar 2004

An Experimental Investigation Of Productivity Stratification And Knowledge Transfer In An Electronically Mediated Environment, Jachin Sakamoto

Theses and Dissertations

The idea of anywhere and anytime learning is enticing from a military standpoint, given the high deployment rates in the current operational environment. Electronic-based learning is seen as an answer to this requirement. Currently there are many variations in electronic-based instructional media, and little has been done to determine which format or combination of formats is most conducive to facilitating knowledge transfer and learning. The research project explores, through the use of an experiment, three primary constructs of media richness, content flexibility, and forced engagement, in their relation to effectiveness or productivity in facilitating learning in the experimental participants. The …

Social Capital And Economic Development: Possible Links And The Implications For Economic Policy, Allan Ochieng Oginga Jan 2004

Social Capital And Economic Development: Possible Links And The Implications For Economic Policy, Allan Ochieng Oginga

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This research project was carried out with three principle objectives. First, I provide a primer investigation of what social capital means and examine its possible relevance in the discipline of economics and I highlight some of the numerous conceptual debates surrounding the theory. Secondly, I shed light on the historical progression and time line for the implications of social capital. That is, where we were in the past, where we are at the current time and where we (as economists) are possibly heading with this into the future. Lastly, I highlight some of the major challenges in applying an empirical …

Prelude To Virtual Groups: Leadership And Technology In Semi-Virtual Groups, Terri L. Griffith, David K. Meader Jan 2004

Prelude To Virtual Groups: Leadership And Technology In Semi-Virtual Groups, Terri L. Griffith, David K. Meader

Management & Entrepreneurship

A study of 76 more and less virtual investment clubs examines the relationships between communication technologies used for club business (from face-to-face to more highly technologically enabled), group leadership role behaviors, and club portfolio value. The results are interesting, with more and less virtual clubs benefiting from different forms of leadership behaviors. Clubs using fewer technologies seem to benefit from a greater focus on socioemotional role (communication) behaviors, while the opposite is found in clubs using more technologies. The effect for procedural role behaviors (agenda setting and the like) appears to run in the opposite direction: clubs using more technologies …

Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck Jan 2004

Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent archaeological evidence supports the claim that the first system of writing and the first use of abstract numerical representation evolved from the clay token accounting system of ancient Mesopotamia. Writing and other abstract symbol systems have subsequently transformed human cognitive capacities within only few millennia, a time period too short for any substantial changes in our biologically-evolved brains. This paper uses Merlin Donald's theory of human cognitive and cultural evolution [in Origins of the Modern Mind; 1991] to identify the role played by ancient accounting in these evolutionary processes. Specifically, it is argued that this early accounting system paved …

Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan Jan 2004

Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan

Accounting Historians Journal

Few disciplines are probably more different than music and accounting. Nonetheless possible suggestions about historiography in accounting and management can be drawn from an innovative textbook on the history of music [Favaro and Pestalozza, 1999]. This is a rather unusual music history textbook. It has several distinguishing features which raise issues about: histories of the present, history and theory making, a non-linear sense of history, a social history of music, a pluralist view of genres, and a multi-geographical emphasis. These features have interesting parallels with accounting history and historiography.

The Moderating Roles Of National Culture And The Country Institutional Profiles On The Effect Of Market Orientation And Entrepreneurial Orientation On The Performance Of Banks In Jordan: An Empirical Investigation, Musa A. Dwairi Jan 2004

The Moderating Roles Of National Culture And The Country Institutional Profiles On The Effect Of Market Orientation And Entrepreneurial Orientation On The Performance Of Banks In Jordan: An Empirical Investigation, Musa A. Dwairi

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of the study was to extend Jaworski and Kohli's (1993) market orientation (MO) model in the banking industry of Jordan. Specifically, the study (1) added entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as a second mediating variable with market orientation, (2) incorporated national culture and country institutional profile as moderators on the performance effects of MO and EO, and (3) replicated other relationships in the market orientation model of Jaworski and Kohli in the banking industry of Jordan. These moderating variables explained some of the discrepancies in the direct performance effects of MO and EO observed in international contexts.

An Exploratory Study Of How Decisions Are Made In The Yield Management Environment Of Four Star Dublin Hotels, Tony Kiely Jan 2004

An Exploratory Study Of How Decisions Are Made In The Yield Management Environment Of Four Star Dublin Hotels, Tony Kiely

Other resources

Yield management in the hotel industry has been described as a method of profitably managing fixed capacity. A critical element of yield management is the decision strategy employed as this determines the degree to which optimum solutions are generated. Recent research has indicated that the use of technology assisted decision optimising models (the management science model) would greatly improve the optimisation of decisions by minimising the need to employ guesswork in achieving optimum solutions. Despite this assurance, yield management remains couched in uncertainty through being inextricably associated with forecasting future demand for a perishable product in an increasingly competitive environment. …

At A Distance: Learning About Cross-Cultural Virtual Teams In An International Management Course, Mikael Søndergaard, Marta Calás, Paul Donnelly Jan 2004

At A Distance: Learning About Cross-Cultural Virtual Teams In An International Management Course, Mikael Søndergaard, Marta Calás, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter narrates our experiences designing and teaching an international management course which was technologically enhanced to include cross-cultural interactions between the US and Denmark. Our rationale, that issues regarding globalization have accelerated the need to bring together through virtual means people from different cultures to engage in collaborative performance at a distance, was addressed in the context of theoretical concerns regarding cultural differences. We discuss the theoretical premises on which we based the course, illustrate the three core distance activities that we designed for these purposes, evaluate the general outcome in light of our objectives, and assess their value …

Elements Of Infrastructure: Factors Driving International Entrepreneurship, Stephen K. Callaway Jan 2004

Elements Of Infrastructure: Factors Driving International Entrepreneurship, Stephen K. Callaway

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article focuses on "born globals" (Knight and Cavusgil 1996) and interfirm resources to explain international entrepreneurship. The theory posed here challenges the traditional image of international business as a long, gradual process not occurring until later in the life cycle, and applying only to large multinational corporations (MNCs).

Increasingly, new ventures must expand their operations internationally early in their history in order to be competitive (Oviatt and McDougall 1994), and require infrastructure (Van de Ven 1993), or interfirm resources, for success. Specifically, firms may rely on three factors to expand internationally: cost factors, unique global resources, and networks.

Using Symbolic Knowledge In The Umls To Disambiguate Words In Small Datasets With A Naive Bayes Classifier, Gondy Leroy, Thomas C. Rindflesch Jan 2004

Using Symbolic Knowledge In The Umls To Disambiguate Words In Small Datasets With A Naive Bayes Classifier, Gondy Leroy, Thomas C. Rindflesch

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Current approaches to word sense disambiguation use and combine various machine-learning techniques. Most refer to characteristics of the ambiguous word and surrounding words and are based on hundreds of examples. Unfortunately, developing large training sets is time-consuming. We investigate the use of symbolic knowledge to augment machine-learning techniques for small datasets. UMLS semantic types assigned to concepts found in the sentence and relationships between these semantic types form the knowledge base. A naïve Bayes classifier was trained for 15 words with 100 examples for each. The most frequent sense of a word served as the baseline. The effect of increasingly …

Barriers To The Acceptance And Utilisation Of Knowledge Management Systems: An Exploratory Study, Patricia Kennett

Theses : Honours

Organisations entering the 21st Century arc exposed to an environment of continuous change, a challenge that requires a movement away from more predictable structures of the past, with hierarchies and formal chains of command. The emerging fluid and network like structures present new challenges for ensuring the development and dissemination of organisational knowledge. An area of considerable current debate involves the issue of harmony and balance between and organisation's culture and its Knowledge Management (KM) systems. The focus of this study is on organisations that are recognising the implications of these changes and are responding by installing knowledge systems in …
