Differences In Exchange Situations In Fast Moving Consumer Goods' Markets, Rose Leahy

Dept. of Marketing & International Business Publications

This paper explores the perceptions and the behaviour of consumers in Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ (FMCG) markets, with the objective of determining the nature of exchange in these markets. Adopting a qualitative approach to the research, ten focus groups were conducted among Irish consumers in FMCG markets. Emerging from the research are four dominant exchange situations that exist in FMCG markets. These exchange situations are classified as inconsistent transaction exchanges, distant committed exchanges, opportunistic interactive exchanges and reciprocal interactive exchanges. The dominant conclusion of this paper is that marketing strategies appropriate to these exchange situations need to be developed, …

Origins And Resolution Of Financial Crises: Lessons From The Current And Northern European Crises, Finn Ostrup, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg Oct 2009

Origins And Resolution Of Financial Crises: Lessons From The Current And Northern European Crises, Finn Ostrup, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Since July 2007, the world economy has experienced a severe financial crisis that originated in the U.S. housing market. Subsequently, the crisis has spread to financial sectors in European and Asian economies and led to a severe worldwide recession. The existing literature on financial crises rarely distinguishes between factors that create the original strain on the financial sector and factors that explain why these strains lead to system-wide contagion and a possible credit crunch. Most of the literature on financial crises refers to factors that cause an original disruption in the financial system. We argue that a financial crisis with …

A Comparative Framework: How Broadly Applicable Is A “Rigorous” Critical Junctures Framework?, John Hogan, David Doyle Jun 2009

A Comparative Framework: How Broadly Applicable Is A “Rigorous” Critical Junctures Framework?, John Hogan, David Doyle

Articles

The paper tests Hogan and Doyle’s (2007; 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilised in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007; 2008) hypothesised ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, …

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly Jun 2009

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly

Doctoral

People have become obsessed with the harmful effects of eating (Rozin, 1999) and are experiencing ‘food anxiety’, a by-product of modern food. The aim of this research was to explore the nature of food anxiety in Ireland and the potential implications for the food sector. The research objectives were to determine the range of issues causing food anxiety in Irish consumers; to investigate the impact of food anxiety on food choice behaviour; to examine the potential of food anxiety as a segmentation variable for categorizing consumers; and to identify antecedents to the experience of food anxiety. A sequential, mixed methodology …

Review Of John Stuart Mill: Victorian Firebrand, Mark Donoghue Jan 2009

Review Of John Stuart Mill: Victorian Firebrand, Mark Donoghue

Business Papers and Journal Articles

John Stuart Mill: Victorian Firebrand opens in St James Park, on a warm summer’s morning, with the teenage Mill striding to his office in Leadenhall Street in the financial heart of the City of London. Suddenly, Mill’s attention is caught by a small bundle abandoned beneath an oak tree. Curious, Mill kneels down beside it and unwraps the layers of soiled blankets only to discover a dead, newborn baby. This grisly experience remained etched in Mill’s mind for the duration of his life and was perhaps formative in shaping his views on the twin rights of life and liberty.

Supreme Seafoods, Thomas Cooney Jan 2009

Supreme Seafoods, Thomas Cooney

Case studies

Fintan Barrett’s four year old daughter would often turn to him while playing and exclaim “what to do, Daddy?” Indeed, this very question of what to do next had frequently swirled around his own head as he considered the options that were now available to him and his business Supreme Seafoods. Some commentators had described the recent economic crisis as ‘a perfect storm’ and that analogy was particularly apt for someone operating in the fish industry. Although Fintan’s family had worked in the fishing industry for many generations, whether out at sea or processing and selling fish on land, the …

Review Of J.S.Mill Revisited: Biographical And Political Explorations, Mark Donoghue

Business Papers and Journal Articles

The commemorative John Stuart Mill bicentennial conference held at University College London in June 2006 has generated renewed interest in the life and work of this notable Victorian personality. In this latest offering, Bruce Kinzer, the veteran of several scholarly works focusing on various aspects of Mill's political thought, has presented his latest deliberations in a work that focuses on two important and overlapping subjects: the first group of chapters cover certain familiar biographical themes relating strictly to Mill's formative years while the latter half of the book dclves into various facets of Mill's political thought and activities in relation …

The Case Of Dr Mohamed Haneef: An Australian 'Terrorism Drama' With British Connections, Mark Rix

Sydney Business School - Papers

This article examines the treatment of Dr Mohamed Haneef, an Indian doctor arrested under Australia‟s anti-terrorism legislation in July 2007 as Australian authorities including the Australian Federal Police, Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, (wrongfully) believed that he was linked to the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport in June 2007. The actions and responses of these two agencies, and the subsequent judicial inquiry are reviewed in the light of the media‟s role and press coverage as the case unfolded.
