Hollywood Entertainment Industry Attraction/Retention Action Plan, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) of the City of Los Angeles was engaged in a 30-year effort to revitalize Hollywood. A key to this effort was the maintenance of the economic health of the entertainment industry businesses which have historically been the backbone of the community's economy. The CRA was concerned that continued out migration of entertainment industry businesses to surrounding areas such as Burbank, Miracle Mile, West Hollywood and West Los Angeles would negatively affect the long-term health of Hollywood's resident and commercial base. Accordingly, the agency elected to prepare an Action Plan aimed at enhancing Hollywood's position as …

Antimicrobial Therapy For Otitis Media With Effusion ("Secretory" Otitis Media), Erdem I. Cantekin, Timothy W. Mcguire, Terri L. Griffith

Management & Entrepreneurship

Objective. —To determine the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatment for otitis media with effusion ("secretory" otitis media) in children.

Data Source. —We report the reexamination of a previously published study by Mandel et al that evaluated the efficacy of a 2-week course of antimicrobials (amoxicillin trihydrate) with and without a 4-week course of an oral decongestant-antihistamine combination in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial involving 518 infants and children with otitis media with effusion.

Data Synthesis. —At 4 weeks, amoxicillin efficacy as determined by a tympanometric criterion (P=.121) or by a measure of improvement in hearing (P=.311) was insignificant. Only by otoscopic …

Book Review: Gunnar Myrdal And America's Conscience: Social Engineering And Racial Liberalism, 1938-1987. By Walter A. Jackson, Ann Mari May

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Walter A. Jackson's Gunnar Myrdal and America's Conscience is more than a biographical sketch of a unique political economist. It is a fine piece of intellectual history that institutionalists, in particular, will appreciate. Jackson gracefully examines the development of Myrdal's thought as a political economist and its influence on his study of race relations, paying mindful attention to the historical context and personal influences shaping Myrdal's work. As a result of Jackson's research, we understand more fully not only the influence of Myrdal's approach as a political economist on his study of race relations, but the way Myrdal impacted the …

Urbanization And Food Imports In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Tabi, Wayne H. Howard, Truman Phillips

Agribusiness

The Granger statistical test of causality was used to examine the relationship between total food imports and urbanization and between food aid and urbanization. Urbanization appears to have caused total food imports to increase in 13 of the 24 countries. Food imports appear to be a cause of urbanization in three countries. Food aid, however, apparently was a cause of urbanization in 16 of the 24 countries used in the analysis.

Racial Discrimination In Business Transactions, Robert E. Suggs Dec 1991

Racial Discrimination In Business Transactions, Robert E. Suggs

Faculty Scholarship

When the Supreme Court invalidated a municipal minority business set-aside in City of Richmond v. J.A. Croson Co., it failed to recognize the special circumstances confronting the minority entrepreneur. Contrary to the Court’s own erroneous assertion that “[s]tates and their local subdivisions have many legislative weapons at their disposal both to punish and prevent present [business] discrimination ….” – they do not. Nor can they create effective antidiscrimination remedies as a practical matter. As a result that decision leaves minority business owners vulnerable to discrimination from other business firms but without a remedy. Part I identifies the glaring failure …

Event-Study Methodology Under Conditions Of Event-Induced Variance, Ekkehart Boehmer, Jim Masumeci, Annette B. Poulsen Dec 1991

Event-Study Methodology Under Conditions Of Event-Induced Variance, Ekkehart Boehmer, Jim Masumeci, Annette B. Poulsen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many authors have identified the hazards of ignoring event-induced variance in event studies. To determine the practical extent of the problem, we simulate an event with stochastic effects. We find that when an event causes even minor increases in variance, the most commonly-used methods reject the null hypothesis of zero average abnormal return too frequently when it is true, although they are reasonably powerful when it is false. We demonstrate that a simple adjustment to the cross-sectional techniques produces appropriate rejection rates when the null is true and equally powerful tests when it is false.

Exchange Rate And Income Effects On South Korean Exports: The Us Case, Heather M. O'Neill, William Ross Dec 1991

Exchange Rate And Income Effects On South Korean Exports: The Us Case, Heather M. O'Neill, William Ross

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes econometrically the effects of direct and cross exchange rates as well as US income and Korean supply developments on the volume of Korean exports to the US. The results suggest that US demand has been the most important factor in the growth of Korean exports to the US in recent years. However, direct exchange rate effects are also important; the estimates suggest that for 1989-90, a yearly 10% real appreciation of the won against the dollar would have lowered export volume by about 10% per year relative to a baseline case. Cross exchange rate effects run counter …
