Examining The Regulatory Value Of Multi-Route Mammalian Acute Systemic Toxicity Studies, Troy Seidle, Pilar Prieto, Anna Bulgheroni
Examining The Regulatory Value Of Multi-Route Mammalian Acute Systemic Toxicity Studies, Troy Seidle, Pilar Prieto, Anna Bulgheroni
Troy Seidle, PhD
Regulatory information requirements for pesticides call for submission of acute systemic toxicity data for up to three different exposure routes (oral, dermal, inhalation) for both active ingredients and formulated products. Similar multi-route testing is required in the European Union and elsewhere for industrial chemicals. To determine the value of acute toxicity testing by more than one route, oral-dermal and oralinhalation concordances among regulatory classifications were examined for large data sets of chemicals and pesticide active ingredients. Across all sectors examined, oral acute toxicity classifications for pure active substances were more severe than those derived from dermal data in more than …

Libraries are often hailed as the cultural and learning hub of their communities. To deepen community engagement and social inclusion, libraries are adopting new technologies to facilitate a participatory and learning culture. With market saturation of smartphones and tablets and their associated apps, new affordances for content creation, curation and sharing show great potential to enhance participatory culture. The typical smartphone or tablet now incorporates digital technologies such as geo-location, audio, video, photo and web technologies. Bringing these technologies into a single device has enabled the development of apps such as Instagram, HistoryPin and SoundCloud. It has also changed the …

Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
C. Jason Woodard
Recent literature on sociotechnical systems has employed the concept of generativity to explain the remarkable capacity for digital artifacts to support decentralized innovation and the emergence of rich business ecosystems. In this paper, we propose agent-based computational modeling as a tool for studying the evolution of generativity, and offer a set of building blocks for constructing agent-based models in which generativity evolves. We describe a series of models that we have created using these building blocks, and summarize the results of our computational experiments to date. We find in several different settings that key features of generative systems can themselves …

It is the Christmas season again! The bell ringers of the Salvation Army can be heard everywhere and generous people throw loose change or dollar bills into the Christmas kettles. Unfortunately, the kettles are not as full recently. Last year, the Salvation Army observed a 10% drop in the donations raised by the Christmas Kettles program. According to Major Ron Busroe of the Salvation Army, a significant factor in this decline is that people have fewer coins and dollar bills in their pockets these days. It is the cards (credit or debit) and mobile payment systems causing this cash-decline in …

Disproportionate Ownership Structure And Ipo Long-Run Performance Of Non-Soes In China, Xiaoming Wang, Jerry Cao, Qigui Liu, Jinghua Tang, Gary Tian
Gary Tian
This paper examines the relationship between ownership structures and IPO long-run performance of non-SOEs in China. Although non-SOEs underperform the market in general after IPO but the poor performance is mainly caused by the IPOs with ownership control wedge. Non-SOEs with one share one vote structure outperform those with control-ownership wedge by 30% for three years post-IPO performance in adjusted buy-and-hold returns. Non-SOEs with control-ownership wedge have higher frequency of undertaking value-destroying related party transactions. These findings suggest that non-SOEs need to improve corporate governance such as disproportionate ownership structure to better safeguard the interest of long-run shareholders.
Does Banks' Dual Holding Affect Bank Lending And Firms' Investment Decisions? Evidence From China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Does Banks' Dual Holding Affect Bank Lending And Firms' Investment Decisions? Evidence From China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Gary Tian
This study investigates the effect of banks' dual holding on bank lending and firms' investment decisions using a sample of listed firms in China. We find that dual holding leads to easier access to bank loans, a result that is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs) than SOEs. We also find that dual holding distorts banks' lending decisions and harms the investment efficiency for SOEs, while resulting in optimal lending decisions and enhanced investment efficiency for non-SOEs. For non-SOEs, further analysis suggests that optimal lending decisions and efficient investment can be achieved for firms with higher ownership concentration, and firms …

The Microfoundations Of Distance: Insights From Psychology To Expand The Notion Of Psychic Distance, Laetitia Em
The Microfoundations Of Distance: Insights From Psychology To Expand The Notion Of Psychic Distance, Laetitia Em

Many studies have focused on the impact of cultural differences between a host and a home environment on macro outcomes such as firms’ strategies and performance. However little attention has been paid towards the microprocesses underlying this relationship. How those differences translate into the minds of decision makers and then affect the way they perceive distances and thus the decisions they make accordingly remains vastly understudied. We suggest here to consider that cultural differences are an input of psychic distance, and to treat psychic distance as a dynamic, subjective, and cognitive process, occurring at the individual level. This theoretical paper aims …

Health Professionals’ Roles In Animal Agriculture, Climate Change, And Human Health, Aysha Z. Akhtar, Michael Greger, Hope Ferdowsian, Erica Frank
Michael Greger, MD, FACLM
What we eat is rapidly becoming an issue of global concern. With food shortages, the rise in chronic disease, and global warming, the impact of our dietary choices seems more relevant today than ever. Globally, a transition is taking place toward greater consumption of foods of animal origin, in lieu of plantbased diets. With this transition comes intensification of animal agriculture that in turn is associated with the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases, environmental degradation, and the epidemics of chronic disease and obesity. Health professionals should be aware of these trends and consider them as they promote healthier and more …

This research contributes to the literature on the antecedents of information systems (IS) use. Drawing from the management control systems literature, we argue that organizational performance is an important antecedent of IS use. Specifically, we argue that periods of performance decline are followed by increased use of decision support systems as managers try to diagnose the causes of performance decline. This offers an alternative perspective to prior literature that has primarily hypothesized a positive effect of IS use on organizational performance. Longitudinal data collected from a healthcare organization for a 5-year period is analyzed using distributed lag models. As hypothesized, …

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar
Mohammed J Sarwar
The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

Revised Aicpacode Of Professional Conduct: Analyzing The Ethical Responsibilities For Members In Public Practice And Members In Industry, Steven Mintz
Steven Mintz
On June 1, 2014, the AICPA issued a codification of the principles, rules, interpretations, and rulings in the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct that specify which ethics provisions apply to members in public practice, members in business, and other members. A major improvement of the revised code is the creation of three sections for members in different areas of practice, to assist accounting professionals in each group to determine whether they are in violation of any of provision of the revised code. This paper explains those provisions as they apply to different members of the Institute.

A multi-site case study applies value-focused thinking methods in a community engaged research framework within three organizations. All three organizations are community development corporations (CDCs), a type of community based organization (CBO) who direct assets and efforts toward housing stock and neighborhood improvement. Objectives hierarchies were developed for the three sites. A set of common aspects of these structures suggest ways to operationalize the generic mission of CDCs. Other aspects which vary across sites can be related to specific characteristics of the organizations and the communities in which they operate. The process of applying value-focused thinking is also compared across …

The Internet Of Things And Wearable Technology: Addressing Privacy And Security Concerns Without Derailing Innovation, Adam D. Thierer
Adam Thierer
This paper highlights some of the opportunities presented by the rise of the so-called “Internet of Things” and wearable technology in particular, and encourages policymakers to allow these technologies to develop in a relatively unabated fashion. As with other new and highly disruptive digital technologies, however, the Internet of Things and wearable tech will challenge existing social, economic, and legal norms. In particular, these technologies raise a variety of privacy and safety concerns. Other technical barriers exist that could hold back IoT and wearable tech — including disputes over technical standards, system interoperability, and access to adequate spectrum to facilitate …
