Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios
Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios
Thomas Henker
Purpose – The purpose of this research is to consider whether market wide herding occurs intraday.
Design/methodology/approach – Using the 1995 Christie and Huang and the 2000 Chang et al. models, the paper tests whether market wide and industry sector herding occurs intraday in the Australian equities market.
Findings – Neither market wide nor industry sector herding occurs intraday.
Research limitations/implications – Both herding measures focus on one specific type of herding, herding evidenced by changes in the cross-sectional return distribution. Therefore the herding measures are ill suited to capture the effects of period specific abnormally high or low market …

International Strategies And Ethics, Jodie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn
International Strategies And Ethics, Jodie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn
Ingrid Bonn
In this paper, we identify and discuss three different levels of ethics that can be implemented by organisations pursuing global, transnational or multinational strategies. Our main argument is that an organisations's approach to ethics depends on its level and type of international strategy adopted. Organisations pursuing global or transnational strategies are likely to regard their approach to ethics as an important strategic decision that needs to be implemented in all subsidiaries around the world. Organisations with multinational strategies are likely to face tension between head-office and subsidiary management if they operate at different levels of ethics.
An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D.
An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D.
David San Filippo Ph.D.
Near-death experiences appear to be universal phenomena that have been reported for centuries. A near-death encounter is defined as an event in which the individual could very easily die or be killed, or may have already been considered clinically dead, but nonetheless survives, and continue his or her physical life. Reports of near-death experiences date back to the Ice Age. There are cave paintings, in France and Spain that depict possible after life scenes that are similar to reported scenes related to near-death experiences. Plato's Republic presents the story of a near-death experience of a Greek soldier named Er. In …

Simulation Of The Colombian Firm Energy Market, Peter Cramton, Steven Stoft
Simulation Of The Colombian Firm Energy Market, Peter Cramton, Steven Stoft
Peter Cramton
We present a simulation analysis of the proposed Colombian firm energy market. The main purpose of the simulation is to assess the risk to suppliers of participation in the market. We also are able to consider variations in the market design, and assess the impact of alternative auction parameters. Three simulation models are developed and analyzed. The first model (Model 1) uses historical price data from October 1995 through May 2006 to assess the performance risk of hypothetical thermal and hydro generating units. The second model (Model 2) uses historical price and operating data to assess performance risk of the …

The Natural Environment, Innovation And Firm Performance: A Comparative Study, Justin Craig, Clay Dibrell
Justin B. Craig
In this article, we investigate the effect of firm-level natural-environment-related policies on innovation and financial performance in family and nonfamily firms. Our findings demonstrate that family firms are better able to facilitate environmentally friendly firm policies associated with improved firm innovation and greater financial performance more effectively than their nonfamily competitors.

Bad Apples In Bad Barrels Revisited: Cognitive Moral Development, Just World Beliefs, Rewards, And Ethical Decision Making, Neal M. Ashkanasy, Carolyn Windsor, Linda K. Trevino
Carolyn Windsor
In this study, we test the interactive effect on ethical decision-making of (1) personal characteristics, and (2) personal expectancies based on perceptions of organizational rewards and punishments. Personal characteristics studied were cognitive moral development and belief in a just world. Using an in-basket simulation, we found that exposure to reward system information influenced managers' outcome expectancies. Further, outcome expectancies and belief in a just world interacted with managers' cognitive moral development to influence managers' ethical decision-making. In particular, low-cognitive moral development managers who expected that their organization condoned unethical behavior made less ethical decisions while high cognitive moral development managers …

A New Alliance In New York State: A Progress Report On The Labor Movement’S Restructuring, Capacity Building, And Programmatic Work, Jeff Grabelsky
Jeffrey Grabelsky
The labor movement in New York State (NYS) has undergone a dramatic restructuring that is part of a national American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations program called the New Alliance. The purpose of the New Alliance is to build the capacity of local labor movements and to empower unions to help shape a region’s political and economic agenda. The restructuring in NYS led to the consolidation of twenty-five central labor councils into five area labor federations, each of which is developing the resources, staff, and leadership to help grow labor’s regional power across the state. This article describes the …

Learning To Lead: The College Experiences Of Women University Presidents, Susan R. Madsen

Although developing leadership is an important topic in the higher education today, the percentage of women found in high leadership positions remains quite low. In fact, little has been published about how high-level women leaders actually developed. This workshop will present the results of two qualitative research studies exploring how 10 women university presidents and 10 women governors became effective leaders, with a particular focus on influential events, individuals, activities, and opportunities during their undergraduate and graduate educational experiences.

Expert Advice, Control, And Heterogeneous Beliefs, Leonidas E. De La Rosa

In this paper, I study the effects of overconfidence in an investment-decision setting. A risk-averse agent privately observes information relevant to an investment decision, which he can then report to a principal. In a standard common-priors setting, the optimal contract provides full insurance to the agent: the principal pays a fixed wage to the agent, asks him to reveal his information, and implements the efficient investment rule. When the agent overestimates the expected revenue of the project following investment, however, he is willing to "wager" on success against the (relatively pessimistic) principal, and hence bear some project risk in equilibrium. …

Exploring The Role Of Formal Bodies Of Knowledge In Defining A Discipline/Profession, P Morris, L Crawford, D Hodgson, M Shepherd, J Thomas

Since the mid 1970s, project management associations around the world have made serious attempts to conduct themselves as professional associations. Traditional professions distinguished themselves by emphasising standards such as service to the public and competence in their field, and by ensuring that their membership meets these standards. An important element of a profession is ownership of a body of knowledge that is distinctive to the professional group. Project management associations have spent considerable time and effort in developing Bodies of Knowledge (BOKs) and their associated certification programs, and indeed the popularity of these has been notable. Yet there are problems, …

Enterprises Communication: An Empirical Analysis, Alberto Nobolo, Francesca Magli
Enterprises Communication: An Empirical Analysis, Alberto Nobolo, Francesca Magli

Abstract: Internalization and major changes now under way are taking investors and customers to demand more economics, commercial and social information. Stakeholders are, in fact, facing many opportunities and choices about their investments and purchases. The increase in competition and the birth of many New Economy companies, rather than assuring them and creating more suitable market situations (for example reduction in prices), is bringing more chaos in the knowledge/information on such companies. Enterprises, to satisfy such lack, should push on more communication. For stakeholders safeguard (after Enron, Parmalat and Cirio cracks), the communication changes and becomes more complex and disciplined. …

The EPSRC funded Rethinking Project Management Network produced several insights into new directions for project management theory and practise, highlighting gaps between current theory and practise in several areas. This paper reviews the discussions around project management practitioner development that arose out of this rethinking process where project management is seen as growing from a predominantly technical skill-set to a broader practise of reflectively managing the things needed to provide a successful project outcome. In particular, the paper identifies and addresses the challenges of developing competent project managers in a world exhibiting increasingly complex project challenges, and when skilled resources …

The Paperless Accounting Classroom: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Students In A Newly Designed Course, Steve Teeter, Susan R. Madsen, Jason Hughes, Brent Eager

Although financial accounting practices in business have capitalized on the use of technology, this technology has not been fully integrated in higher education for accounting students. While traditional accounting courses laboriously involve rote transcription of debits and credits, educational technology in accounting courses may prove inherently beneficial. Faculty members designed and offered a paperless accounting course that utilized a variety of technologies. This study explored student perceptions regarding the satisfaction and effectiveness of three of these technologies: 1) the Classroom Performance System (CPS) response pad (clicker) from eInstruction.com, 2) PC Tablet (teacher use); and 3) WebCT. This study analyzes the …

Continual employee training and learning is critical to the ability of organizations to adapt to an ever changing national and international business environment. What motivates employees to learn? Abraham Maslow has had a significant impact on motivation theory, humanistic psychology, and subsequently, adult learning in the workplace. This paper will discuss the development of Maslow’s humanistic views and trace their impact on past trends in business training as well as the implications for current challenges that managers face in motivating employee learning in the workplace.
