Parole And Probation Officers' Perceptions Of Management Effectiveness In Baltimore County, Maryland, Valencia Tamir Johnson Dr.
Parole And Probation Officers' Perceptions Of Management Effectiveness In Baltimore County, Maryland, Valencia Tamir Johnson Dr.
Valencia T Johnson
Management practices in the rehabilitation and criminal justice system are primarily concerned with how employees sense, collect, organize, and process information regarding the criminal offender. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure parole and probation officers' perceptions regarding management support and effectiveness in the workplace, with particular emphasis on communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Herzberg's 2-factor theory of motivation served as the theoretical framework for the study, supporting the concept of participatory management as a central factor in job satisfaction. A researcher-designed, Likert-type questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample of 31 parole and probation officers in …

Dipanjay Jayant Bhalerao
Indian online retail industry is growing at a scorching pace since last decade and expected to grow to become the largest online consumer market by 2025. In this context the present demography, which is clearly led by the youth at 65% of the total population, will play a vital role in the boost of online retail industry in India. This research aims at mapping the young Indian consumers with the application of cluster analysis. The study found two major types of consumer segments i.e. social and convenience oriented cluster (SCOC) and price and affordability conscious cluster (PACC). The study found …

Navigating The Life Cycle Of Trust In Developing Economies: One-Size Solutions Do Not Fit All, Laura Hartman, Julie Gedro, Courtney Masterson

Trust is critical to the development and maintenance of collaborative and cohesive relationships in societies, broadly, and in organizations, specifically. At the same time, trust is highly dependent on the social context in which it occurs. Unfortunately, existing research involving trust remains somewhat limited to a particular set of developed economies, providing a window to explore a culture's stage of economic development as a key contextual determinant of trust within organizations. In this article, we review the state of the scholarship on trust and identify those qualities of trust that are common in organizations at similar stages of economic development, …

Youth Structures In Six European Trade Union Federations: A Short Overview, Kurt Vandaele
Youth Structures In Six European Trade Union Federations: A Short Overview, Kurt Vandaele
Kurt Vandaele
This short contribution focuses on the structures for organizing and representing young workers in six European trade union federations (ETUFs). The reason for this is that recently trade union youth structures have stepped up their efforts, internally and externally, to promote the interests and needs of young workers. At least two motives in particular underlie the reinforcement of existing structures or the establishment of new ones. First of all, the increased prominence of those youth structures should be seen in light of the widespread growth in youth unemployment in Europe and European Commission initiatives, such as the Youth Guarantee, to …
Explaining Leaving Union Membership By The Degree Of Labour Market Attachment: Exploring The Case Of Germany, Janine Leschke, Kurt Vandaele
Explaining Leaving Union Membership By The Degree Of Labour Market Attachment: Exploring The Case Of Germany, Janine Leschke, Kurt Vandaele
Kurt Vandaele
By particularly stressing the weaker labour market attachment of workers with non-standard contracts, this article contributes to the rather unexplored issue of mainly non-union-related reasons for leaving trade unions. Germany has been selected as a case study because German unions experienced a steady decline in membership, while at the same time non-standard employment arrangements increased considerably and more so than the European average. Using the German Socio-Economic Panel data, the authors construct a labour market attachment variable capturing different degrees of attachment. Their analysis shows the impact of labour market attachment and firm-level characteristics on union leaving and points especially …

Aristotle tells us, in his Nicomachean Ethics, that we become ethical by building good habits and we become unethical by building bad habits: “excellence of character results from habit, whence it has acquired its name (êthikê) by a slight modification of the word ethos (habit).” Excellence of character comes from following the right habits. Thinking of ethics as habit-forming may sound unusual to the modern mind, but not to Aristotle or the medieval thinkers who grew up in his long shadow. “Habit” in Greek is “ethos,” from which we get our modern word, “ethical.” In Latin, habits are moralis, which …

How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell
How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell
Donnel A Briley
Gamblers' enduring illusions of control (IOC) may be one reason why they continue to gamble in the face of sustained losses. If gamblers persist in the belief that they have special skills, knowledge and other advantages when gambling, they may be able to convince themselves it is worth doing again. Maintaining an IOC requires selective attention of the illusion supporting moments during the construction of an evaluation of a gambling session. Objective: Test the hypothesis that selected moments, specifically the moment of the highest win and the last moment of the gaming session, explain the retrospective evaluation of the session for …

The present study sought to investigate the role of mentoring relationships in predicting career resilience. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey based research design using a sample of 205 managers from public and private sector organizations in North India. Mentoring relationships were measured under the 2 broad categories of career mentoring and psychosocial mentoring in alignment with previous studies. The findings showed that psychosocial mentoring acts as a significant predictor of career resilience;however, career mentoring was not found to have any significant influence on career resilience. Given research thus reiterated the significant contribution of mentoring in influencing career outcomes such …

Changing The Faces Of Leadership: Executive Advancement For Professionals Of Color, Hannah Roth
Hannah Roth
There is a need for leadership development in companies to help prepare the next generation of leaders and to promote growth for employees. Additionally, the lack of diversity within the top ranks of leadership needs to be addressed. There is a need for more development programs that increase diversity in top leadership so that leadership at the highest levels of these organizations better reflect the demographics of the United States. There are numerous studies that demonstrate many professionals of color do not advance in their careers as quickly as their counterparts. This paper discusses how leadership development strategies tailored for …
Employee Judgments Of And Behaviors Towards Corporate Social Responsibility: A Multi-Study Investigation Of Direct, Cascading, And Moderating Effects, Pavlos A. Vlachos, Nick Panagopoulos, Adam Rapp
Employee Judgments Of And Behaviors Towards Corporate Social Responsibility: A Multi-Study Investigation Of Direct, Cascading, And Moderating Effects, Pavlos A. Vlachos, Nick Panagopoulos, Adam Rapp
Pavlos A Vlachos
Do employee judgments of their organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs relate to CSR-specific performance and in-role job performance? Can middle managers influence the formation of such judgments and what factors might moderate such cascading influences? To answer these yet unaddressed questions, we conduct three studies. Study 1 takes an organizational justice perspective and tests our baseline model. Results show that employees’ CSR judgments trigger their affective commitment and performance on extra-role CSR-specific behaviors; however, extra-role CSR-specific performance is unrelated to in-role job performance. Study 2 replicates Study 1’s findings while, in addition, applies a social information processing approach and …

The Economic And Behavioral Success Of Riot Games In An Undifferentiated Video Game Market, Maxine J. Yakobi
The Economic And Behavioral Success Of Riot Games In An Undifferentiated Video Game Market, Maxine J. Yakobi
Maxine J Yakobi
The vast success of Riot Games is relatively undisputed amongst financial analysts as well as online communities despite there being little information publicly available that specifically addresses how their game has differentiated itself in a homogenous market. Additionally, there is little information that addresses the opportunity cost of paying money for components within this specific server for advantages within the game. I believe there to be something functionally unique about Riot’s business in particular that allows for it to acquire steady fiscal growth from people investing their money into effectively a “free” online game and I would like to explore …
Distinguishing ‘Mhealth’ From Other Healthcare Services In A Developing Country: A Study From The Service Quality Perspective, Saradhi Motamarri, Shahriar Akter, Pradeep Ray, Chung-Li Tseng
Distinguishing ‘Mhealth’ From Other Healthcare Services In A Developing Country: A Study From The Service Quality Perspective, Saradhi Motamarri, Shahriar Akter, Pradeep Ray, Chung-Li Tseng
Shahriar Akter
Mobile phones’ exponential growth is fuelling the emergence of mobile health (mHealth), thus contributing to healthcare services’ innovative transformation in developing countries. mHealth’s ubiquitous personalised capabilities obviate the access barriers and dismal performance of conventional systems, thus -therefore gaining popularity among patients. Researchers have focused on service quality – a vital element of service adoption – and sustainability. For mHealth to become a robust alternative, how patients perceive mHealth vis-à-vis conventional services must be understood. Comparative analysis studies between mHealth and conventional systems are scarce yet would contribute to theory and strengthen the antecedent phases to service quality, that is, …

Undermining Mobilization? The Effect Of Job Flexibility And Job Instability On The Willingness To Strike, Kurt Vandaele
Undermining Mobilization? The Effect Of Job Flexibility And Job Instability On The Willingness To Strike, Kurt Vandaele
Kurt Vandaele
This article addresses the question of whether, and to what extent job flexibility is detrimental to mobilization with regard to the willingness to take part in industrial action. The authors examine the influence of job flexibility (‘standard’ versus ‘non-standard’ work) and job instability (changes from one job to another) on employees’ willingness to strike. Based on Dutch survey data it is shown that only minor differences exist between ‘standard’ and ‘non-standard’ employees in their willingness to participate in a strike. While this study did not establish a major direct effect of job flexibility on strike participation, tests of interaction effects …
Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg
Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg
Olivier Chatain
We utilize a unique database from a large legal services provider to examine how service quality responds to the firm's available capacity, and to the nature of the firm-client relationship. We develop empirical measures of both the (internal) level of resources available to the firm at different points in time, and of the (external) value creation for customers. Our results indicate that service quality increases in the amount of the firm's available resources, suggesting that quality adjustment can be used as a means of tackling capacity constraints. We also find that service quality increases in the number of previous successful …
Regional Institutional Development, Political Connections, And Entrepreneurial Performance In China's Transition Economy, Wubiao Zhou
Wubiao Zhou
While previous research has emphasized the role of political connections in facilitating entrepreneurial performance in China’ early reform period (1978 – 1999), this study argues that regional institutions had been increasingly conducive to entrepreneurial activities and, thus, also played a key role in China’s entrepreneurial success during that period. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it aims to demonstrate how regional institutional development facilitated entrepreneurial performance in China. Second, it aims to understand how formal institutional development among Chinese regions affected the role of political connections. Using a two-level hierarchical dataset on Chinese private enterprises, this study finds …

Rethinking The Worker Classification Test: Employees, Entrepreneurship, And Empowerment, Griffin Toronjo Pivateau
Griffin Toronjo Pivateau
The structure of the American workplace depends on the ability to distinguish between employees and independent contractors. Unfortunately, the law provides little to guide employers in classifying workers. The legal tests to determine worker status are confusing, yield inconsistent results, and are not suited to the evolving employment relationship. Traditionally, courts examine the amount of control exerted over the putative employee by the employer: The more control exerted by the employer over the work, the more likely it is that the worker will be considered an employee. Control, however, is not the only factor to examine in determining worker status. …
Booties, Bounties, Business Models: A Map To The Next Red Oceans, Steffen Roth Dr.
Booties, Bounties, Business Models: A Map To The Next Red Oceans, Steffen Roth Dr.
Dr. Steffen Roth
This quest is for pirate maps to blue oceans. The key problem involved is that blue oceans turn red whenever these maps make their way from pirates to mainstream entrepreneurs. Pirates therefore have an essential need for maps to the next blue oceans. In drawing on form theory, this article develops a map sheet, on which it appears that, throughout history, pirates navigated social borders. An analysis of the gaps in past and present maps of social differentiation then allows for the discovery of a largely uncharted quadrant of the blue ocean for entrepreneurship and entrepreneuring.
The Multifunctional Organization: Two Cases For A Critical Update For Research Programs In Management And Organization, Steffen Roth
The Multifunctional Organization: Two Cases For A Critical Update For Research Programs In Management And Organization, Steffen Roth
Dr. Steffen Roth
Organization and functional differentiation are considered key principles of modern societies. Yet, within organizational studies little research has been conducted on the interplay of function systems, organizations, and society. The few existing studies suppose trends to more functional polyphony. The cases presented in this article, however, support the idea that organizational multifunctionality is the standard case rather than a special case of organization. It is furthermore shown that organizations can change their function system preference and that the translation between function systems can be an organization’s main function. A Google Ngram view on functional differentiation finally furthers the idea that …

The Growth And Transformation Of The Temporary Job Market, Travis J. Begin
Travis J Begin
The temporary job market is likely to grow as the economy evolves. This descriptive analysis discusses from a labor supply and demand perspective the determinants of temporary employment, where it developed, who it pertains to, and in which industries and occupations it is utilized. In addition, statistical analysis provides an insight into the temporary employment form in international labor markets. This provides a framework to predict the future of temporary employment as the economy evolves.
Macro Determinants Of Formal Entrepreneurship Versus Total Entrepreneurship, Mai T T Thai, Ekaterina Turkina
Macro Determinants Of Formal Entrepreneurship Versus Total Entrepreneurship, Mai T T Thai, Ekaterina Turkina
Mai T T Thai
Based on the eclectic theory of entrepreneurship, this article analyzes macro-level determinants of national rates of formal versus informal entrepreneurship. Our evaluation of the factors identified in this theory reveals a set of empirically-testable, higher-order determinants: economic opportunities, quality of governance, macro-level resources and abilities, performance-based culture and socially-supportive culture. The results of our analysis obtained through the PLS (partial least squares) approach to structural equation modeling contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by providing an empirically-supported model that shows how formal and informal entrepreneurship are driven differently. This model clarifies the conflicting findings in previous research about the effects of …

Should It Be Green Or Not? Investigating What Constitutes Prototypical Packaging Design For Organic Food, Polymeros Chrysochou, Alexandra Festila, Aleksandra Georgieva, Diana Todorova
Polymeros Chrysochou
The market for organic food products showed impressive growth rates in 2010, accounting for 59 billion US dollars (Sahota, 2012). This high growth is underpinned by an increased availability of organic food products through big retail chains and by following similar marketing strategies to conventional brands. Hence, communication at the point of sale that the product is organic is of increased importance in order to be distinguished from conventional ones. Packaging is among those marketing tools that contribute in brand differentiation and establish brand identity and, since most of the food choices are made in store, it represents the only …
