Higher education boards are turning to accountable board leadership and macroengagement discussions in lieu of traditional micromanagement of operations. The Policy Governance© model integrates unique principles designed to enable accountable board leadership. This paper describes an Action Research project that was conducted with the Board of Yavapai College. The Board adopted Policy Governance© but failed to practice its tenets. This research seeks to demonstrate whether a technology based board management system, OurBoardroom, that fully implements Policy Governance©, can assist the Board in the practice of the model. The change management system at a manufacturing company is a bottleneck to the new product release cycle, causing numerous product releases to be delayed resulting in lost revenue and financial impact to the business. Staff in Boulder County Public Health's Environmental Health Division Consumer Protection Program are experiencing low morale. With the collaborative involvement of the Consumer Protection Team, the purpose of this action research project is to determine the causes of low employee morale through the use of several data collection tools, and to develop an intervention plan to improve employee morale. This paper documents the background of the organization, the morale problem, methods used to assess the problem, results of data collection and a discussion of the findings and recommendations to address morale.

The Internship Program At Manhattan Christian College: The Problem Of Continued Improvement, Jeffrey G. Davis

Manhattan Christian College (MCC) has been educating, equipping, and enriching Christian leaders for over 75 years. An important part of that training process has been the academic internship program, now titled the "Directed Field Experience" (DFE). The program has encountered a period of complacency, which has some participants questioning the effectiveness of the current internship program. This action research project used questionnaires, both online and in personal interviews and focus groups, with students and DFE supervisors to identify areas of potential improvement. Potential interventions include refined definitions, communicating earlier in the process with supervisors, and developing a DFE website.

This professional project examines the growing focus on organizational evaluation and the use of assessment tools that contribute to organizational development and capacity-building. An extensive literature review addresses the background, framework and various approaches to organizational assessment. Three assessment tools reviewed in this project provided the basis for an organizational assessment of Teen Challenge of The Rocky Mountains. These tools along with interviews and an examination of records and organizational documents resulted in a wide spectrum of recommendations. The core recommendations address the need for sufficient and sustainable assets, deep and broad leadership, and a commitment to learning and self-reflection.

The Regis University Alumni and Parent Relations Department reaches out to generations of former students, and with University growth the challenge of this continually increases. Ways the Department can enhance support to graduates of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions (RHSHP) were explored through varied media. The action research included interviews, an alumni survey, consultation with sister Jesuit schools, and review of secondary literature specific to the topic of alumni associations and organizational change. A department consisting of four teams of courseware developers and instructors had been experiencing a lack of team cohesiveness as evidenced by the exclusion of individuals and unwillingness to support group goals. Using action research, a collaborative team was formed and data collected using surveys, interviews and observations. The results of the data were fed back to the collaborative team for data analysis. A week long team training session was held that provided for interpretation and clarification of courseware editing procedures. Team structure and location were also modified to allow for closer communications with the customer/supplier.

The purpose of this action research project was to assess and understand the existing Personal Development Process at CU and identify and mitigate the causes of the confusion and variations in implementation of this tool. A collaborative group utilized questionnaires, focus groups, and a pilot process to diagnose the extent of the problem. The collaborative group with the help of the organization's employees designed and implemented interventions, and evaluated the project. The project results yielded an employee personal development tool which was used organization wide for 4 years.
