How Faith And Leadership Are Connected: A Study Of Catholic Women Administrators In A Southern Public Institution Of Higher Education, Mary Blanchard Wallace Jan 2012

How Faith And Leadership Are Connected: A Study Of Catholic Women Administrators In A Southern Public Institution Of Higher Education, Mary Blanchard Wallace

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Studies concerning spirituality and higher education, particularly for the college student, are beginning to appear in journals, conference papers, and presentations. However, there is little research conducted with professionals in higher education on the construct of spirituality. Spirituality has so many different definitions in the literature, it is difficult to define, and perhaps even more complex to study academically. Using a research-based conceptual model for religious faith, developed within the study of family sciences, this study examines the lived experience of how and why Catholic women administrators connect their faith and leadership in a setting of public institutions of higher …

Essays On Alternative Weighting Schemes For Active Equity Indexes, Wenguang Lin Jan 2012

Essays On Alternative Weighting Schemes For Active Equity Indexes, Wenguang Lin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

By definition, cap-weighted indexes place the largest (smallest) weights on the most overvalued (undervalued) securities. Fundamental indexation has recently been proposed as a passive, low-cost strategy that outperforms classical cap-weighted indexes. This dissertation focuses on new alternative weighting schemes based on fundamental indexation and analyzes underlying forces that drive their outperformance. The first essay proposes an alternative weighting strategy based on enterprise-value multiple (EM). Over the period 1972–2013, the EM-weighted index (Details of the weighting scheme can be referred to appendix) has the lowest tracking error and the highest information ratio when compared with six fundamental-weighted indexes based on book-equity …

Paradoxes And Consumer Decision-Making, Carolyn Popp Garity Jan 2012

Paradoxes And Consumer Decision-Making, Carolyn Popp Garity

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Consumers often find themselves faced with conflicting evaluations in which they identify both positive and negative aspects of a purchase or consumption experience. A paradox occurs when the individual is aware of the conflicting evaluations and experiences tension as a result. While there are strong potential implications of paradox, marketing research has been slow to study consumption paradoxes. As a result, many deficiencies exist in the literature, including no consensus as to the definition of consumer paradox, insufficient quantitative measurement, and limited knowledge of the antecedents and consequences of paradox. This dissertation was conducted to address these shortcomings. Essay one …

Two Essays On Information In Trading, Yanhao Fang Jan 2012

Two Essays On Information In Trading, Yanhao Fang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation comprises of two essays. The first essay, ‘Index Price Discovery in the Cash Market’, employs Hasbrouck’s (2003) information share method to analyze the flow of information in equity markets. In particular I compare trading in Index ETFs with that of their underlying securities. Surprisingly, ETFs seem to play a significant role in the price discovery process, rather than serving as passive indexing/hedging vehicles. Using TAQ data I reconstruct the second-by-second intraday price series for the S&P 500 using its component stocks. Results show that the ETF contributes almost half of the price formation of S&P 500 in the …

Experimental Study Of Lean Blowout With Hydrogen Addition In A Swirl-Stabilized Premixed Combustor, Shengrong Zhu Jan 2012

Experimental Study Of Lean Blowout With Hydrogen Addition In A Swirl-Stabilized Premixed Combustor, Shengrong Zhu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lean premixed combustion is widely used to achieve a better compromise between nitric oxides emissions and combustion efficiency. However, combustor operation near the lean blowout limit can render the flame unstable and lead to oscillations, flashback, or extinction, thereby limiting the potential range of lean combustion. Recent interest in integrated gasification combined cycle plants and syngas combustion requires an improved understanding of the role of hydrogen on the combustion process. Therefore, in present study, combustion of pure methane and blended methane-hydrogen has been conducted in a swirl stabilized premixed combustor. The measurement techniques implemented mainly include particle image velocimetry, CH*/OH* …

Equipped To Serve Our Youth: A Phenomenological Study Of 4-H Extension Youth Educators' Perceptions Of The Value Of Mentoring, Allison Ann Bruchhaus Jan 2012

Equipped To Serve Our Youth: A Phenomenological Study Of 4-H Extension Youth Educators' Perceptions Of The Value Of Mentoring, Allison Ann Bruchhaus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Challenging economic times and increasingly complex social contexts intensify the demand for organizations to focus on areas of human resource development that positively contribute to developmental relationships of employees. One such method is the implementation of a formal mentoring program. Mentoring is especially important for 4-H youth educators. Youth educators are usually specialized in program development among other areas and plan, implement, and evaluate programs with the intent of bettering the quality of life for youth. The dynamics of working with today’s youth mandate effective professional development and developmental relationships for career enhancement. This study was developed for the researcher …

Accounting Comparability, Audit Effort And Audit Outcomes, Joseph Hongbo Zhang Jan 2012

Accounting Comparability, Audit Effort And Audit Outcomes, Joseph Hongbo Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The paper investigates the usefulness of accounting comparability for audit engagement. Comparability among peer firms in the same industry reflects the similarity and the relatedness of firms’ operating environment and accounting reporting. From two perspectives of “inherent business risk” and “external information efficiency”, comparability is helpful for auditors to assess client business risk and lowers the cost of information acquisition, processing, and testing. For a given firm, I hypothesize that the availability of information about comparable firms is helpful for auditors by improving audit accuracy and audit efficiency. The comparability proxy is based on a variety of measures including pair-wise …

The Use Of Discrete Computer Simulation Modeling To Estimate The Direct And Diffusion Effects Of Leadership Development Intervention On The Return On Investment, Brett Wayne Richard Jan 2012

The Use Of Discrete Computer Simulation Modeling To Estimate The Direct And Diffusion Effects Of Leadership Development Intervention On The Return On Investment, Brett Wayne Richard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Organizational leaders seek monetary returns on their investments (ROI). Thus, making decisions to invest in human capital, such as in leadership development interventions, are often difficult due to the lack of research demonstrating monetary returns on development investment (RODI). Further, little research has been conducted on the diffusion effects of leadership development intervention, or returns on leadership diffusion (ROLD). This research expands on previous research conducted by Avolio, Avey & Quinsenberry (2010), which was the first attempt to estimate RODI using utility analysis. This study is unique in that it uses computer simulation modeling along with current research data to …

Assessing Intention Of Volunteers To Develop Their Leadership: Creation Of An Instrument Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Janina Marie Fuller Jan 2012

Assessing Intention Of Volunteers To Develop Their Leadership: Creation Of An Instrument Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Janina Marie Fuller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During the current tough economic times volunteers are playing an increasingly important role in making human services widely available and in building collaborative community partnerships. Volunteers are most likely to be productive, to be satisfied with their experience, and to sustain their volunteer service when the opportunities provided to them are aligned with their motives for volunteering, which may include building the kinds of knowledge, skills, and interpersonal awareness that are the cornerstones of leadership. Organizations that purposefully recognize, support, and develop their volunteers’ leadership potential generate positive outcomes not only for themselves and their volunteers, but also for the …

Aggregate Analyst Forecast Errors, Price Delay, And Business Cycle, Ping-Wen Sun Jan 2012

Aggregate Analyst Forecast Errors, Price Delay, And Business Cycle, Ping-Wen Sun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two essays. The first essay, “Stock market liquidity, aggregate analyst forecast errors, and the economy,” is motivated by Næs, Skjeltorp, and Ødegaard (2011), who suggest that stock market liquidity is a good leading indicator of the economy. To further understand the mechanism in the economic forecastability of stock market liquidity, we hypothesize that analyst earnings forecast errors have a systematic component, which is predictable and related to changes in the economy, and that smart investors exploit analyst forecast errors, which leads to the economic forecastability of stock market liquidity. Consistent with our hypothesis, we find that …

Impulse Buying On The Internet, Claire Elizabeth Crafts Jan 2012

Impulse Buying On The Internet, Claire Elizabeth Crafts

LSU Master's Theses

Technology makes buying faster, smarter, and more convenient for consumers, and supplies endless opportunities for impulse buying. Research of this topic examines influencers for impulsive online shopping, and marketing techniques used to encourage such actions. After a thorough literature review to identify important factors relating to impulsive purchases and to develop hypotheses, a survey is conducted to provide data on which the hypotheses can be tested. The survey is divided into four sections examining the effectiveness of online marketing techniques, shopping habits, Internet habits, and questions relating to a recent online impulse purchase. Theories to test include ones relating to …

It Outsourcing Governance: A Conceptual Framework For Theory And Practice, Santiago Pena Jan 2012

It Outsourcing Governance: A Conceptual Framework For Theory And Practice, Santiago Pena

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study is to improve our understanding of IT Outsourcing Governance, which has become an increasingly significant topic in recent years. In order to gain an understanding of this topic, an extensive literature review was performed and analyzed with argument mapping. The data yielded from the argument maps was used to create a comprehensive framework for IT Outsourcing Governance. What resulted was a new conceptualization of IT Outsourcing Governance, focused not only on governance structures and decision rights, but also on relationship management. This conceptualization not only provides a better understanding, but also presents a sharp contrast …

The Influence Of The Introduction Of Baccalaureate Degree Programs On The Awarding Of Associate Degrees At Public Community Colleges, David Joseph Wesse Jan 2012

The Influence Of The Introduction Of Baccalaureate Degree Programs On The Awarding Of Associate Degrees At Public Community Colleges, David Joseph Wesse

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Little research has been done to examine how the awarding of bachelor’s degrees, by community colleges, influences the traditional associate degree-granting role of these institutions. This quantitative study investigates the impact of this change on the community colleges that have been allowed to award bachelor’s degrees, examining how this change affects the traditional associate degree granting output of these institutions. The population for this study is all public community colleges in the United States that offer associate degrees, including those awarding bachelor’s degrees. A data query was used to collect the data for this study from the Integrated Postsecondary Education …

Extending Social Cognitive Career Theory Into The Entrepreneurship Domain: Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy's Mediating Role Between Inputs, Outcome Expectations, And Intentions, Eric William Liguori Jan 2012

Extending Social Cognitive Career Theory Into The Entrepreneurship Domain: Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy's Mediating Role Between Inputs, Outcome Expectations, And Intentions, Eric William Liguori

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Self-efficacy is among the most important constructs in recent entrepreneurship literature (Forbes, 2005), and is central to our understanding of entrepreneurial phenomena. Accordingly, it often captures the attention of policy makers, community leaders, educators and entrepreneurship advocates (e.g., Shook & Bratianu, 2010; Descant, 2010; McCollister, 2011; Chapman, 2011). In this dissertation, I seek to expand upon the extant knowledge of self-efficacy research by undertaking three specific objectives. First, I apply a social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) to entrepreneurship, and posit that this is a more robust theoretical framework to study individual entrepreneurial activity. Second, I explore …

Stock Liquidity, Price Informativeness, And Accruals-Based Earnings Management, Jing Fang Jan 2012

Stock Liquidity, Price Informativeness, And Accruals-Based Earnings Management, Jing Fang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We examine the effect of stock liquidity on accruals-based earnings management. Finance literature suggests that stock liquidity leads to price efficiency. If prices are efficient, more future earnings should be reflected in current prices. Therefore, gain from shifting accruals across periods should be low and managers should have less incentive to manage earnings. We find that higher stock liquidity is associated with higher future earnings response coefficient and lower accruals-based earnings management. Our finding has important implication for the decline in accruals-based earnings management during 2001-2005 documented in prior study. Our additional trend analysis suggests that instead of SOX and …

Factors Affecting University Stem Faculty Job Satisfaction, Lisa Babin Verret Jan 2012

Factors Affecting University Stem Faculty Job Satisfaction, Lisa Babin Verret

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many job satisfaction studies have been done on faculty in higher education, but very little research has focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty. Through these studies, very little consensus has been reached on the satisfaction levels of male and female faculty. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the job satisfaction of tenured and tenure-track male and female STEM faculty at research institutions in six states. Moreover, the study sought to examine the relationship between STEM faculty job satisfaction and potential explanatory factors: gender, rank, tenure, salary, family status, whether or not there are children …

Online Reviews And Consumers' Willingness To Pay: The Role Of Uncertainty, Yinglu Wu Jan 2012

Online Reviews And Consumers' Willingness To Pay: The Role Of Uncertainty, Yinglu Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Empirical studies of online reviews have found that valence (average rating) has a consistently positive impact on consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP), but volume does not. Although two studies tried to explain this phenomenon using different perspectives (Wu and Ayala, 2012; Sun, 2012), neither study can fully accommodate the consumer behaviors observed by the other. This dissertation adopts a theoretical framework that can explain the consumer behaviors observed in both studies as well as the varying influence of review volume at the individual level. Specifically, several studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between bidirectional online seller reviews (e.g., the …

Examining Customer Felt Gratitude And Indebtedness In Exchanges: Their Conceptualizations, Causes And Consequences, Dora Elizabeth Schmit Jan 2012

Examining Customer Felt Gratitude And Indebtedness In Exchanges: Their Conceptualizations, Causes And Consequences, Dora Elizabeth Schmit

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although gratitude has been termed the second most frequently experienced positive emotion (Fredrickson 2009), marketing research has only recently started to explore the role of gratitude in customer relationships. As a result, many deficiencies exist in the literature, including the distinction between this emotion and indebtedness. Further and related to this issue, little is known about gratitude’s conceptualization, antecedents and consequences. This dissertation was conducted to address these deficiencies and extend knowledge concerning customer felt gratitude and indebtedness. Essay one was conducted to offer in-depth insight to the conceptualizations of customer felt gratitude and indebtedness. A hermeneutical interpretive approach was …
