This dissertation explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and capability development in emerging markets. This study focuses on entrepreneurial activities in multinational corporations (MNCs) in emerging markets. Maquila plants and local Mexican suppliers located in (or near) Reynosa, Tamaulipas are investigated. The results from 34 interviews of a sample local Mexican supplier, maquila plant, local government, local university and Reynosa Asociación de Maquiladoras y Manufactureras, A.C. (RAMMAC) suggest that the entrepreneurship in the maquila plants occurs through the continuous improvement in the manufacturing process. The purpose is primarily efficiency and quality. The objective of this dissertation is to better understand the phenomenon of brand evangelism and the dimensions that are involved in a consumer becoming a brand evangelist. A brand evangelist is a consumer who actively “spreads the good word” of the brand while attempting to influence others’ consumption behavior. Through the development and testing of a model, this study helps to realize the concepts that are involved in a consumer becoming a brand evangelist. Research in the area of financing and investment decisions made by firms focuses on maximization of shareholder wealth in an open corporation with clear separation of ownership and management. The inherent profit motive leaves no ambiguity in investment decision-making. On the other hand, several other factors come into play when the organization making the investment decision is non-profit. This dissertation investigates the influence that community uninsurance may have on investment decisions in hospitals, most of which operate as non-profit ventures. This dissertation consists of two essays on how investor sentiments affect the returns and volatility of the Brazilian stock market. Both essays share a similar methodological approach. The first one analyzes the effect of investor sentiments on the returns and volatility of the Brazilian stock market using a model that accounts for fundamentals (rational) and noise components (irrational) of investor sentiments on the Sao Paulo leading index Bovespa. This research finds a statistically significant positive (negative) impact of rational (irrational) sentiments on market returns. Co-optation theory has evolved such that the cultural friction between consumer agency and the market provides an eternal source of marketing opportunities for marketers to culturally rejuvenate their businesses. The relevant literature studying consumer identity, however, precludes docile consumers from the analyses and theorization process. Given the theoretical incompleteness, this dissertation first expounds the nature of consumer agency by studying consumer cultural conditions cultivated and entrenched since modern epoch. Workplace stress has been associated with negative job satisfaction outcomes, therefore leading employees to engage in coping strategies to minimize the consequences of the stressors. Although much research has been conducted on workplace stressors and their consequences, a small amount of literature exists on how women and Hispanics cope with workplace stressors or how people cope with the stressors in religious ways. To investigate the relationships among these factors, data was collected via an online survey completed by 268 university employees at a southwestern university.
