A 1965 status study of vocational Education in Utah sought the opinions of state educators and the genera l citizenry. Two major conclusions from that study follow:

The present day school system is not adequately meeting the needs of young people. It serves well the 20 percent who may complete college and some others, but it is woefully short of meeting the needs of nearly 80 percent of the young people of this country. This study of the graduates of Davis High School. Kaysville, Utah, who took one or more years of bookkeeping between the years 1959 and 1965, was made to determine what principles of bookkeeping and accounting are being used or have been used in their personal and vocational activities.

During 1962, 15,782 businesses in the United States failed. Nearly half, 7,552 of the failures were in the retail field. Causes of failure ranged from insufficient capital to poor store location. However, more than ninety per cent of the failures in retailing are thought to be caused by a lack of training and experience on the part of store owners and their employees. In 1966, the state of Utah had the highest per capita business failure rate of any state in the nation as reported by Dun's Review Magazine. A study was made of the use of credit by a randomly selected sample of the Utah State University staff personnel during 1964 and 1965. The information was obtained by means of a questionnaire.

The major objective of the study was to examine the relationship between income and consumer debt with specific reference to reasons underlying the demand for consumer credit, the relationships between amount of consumer credit and variables such as family income, family size, age of family head and amount of liquid assets, and the nature of the demand function for consumer credit.

A survey of inventory systems was made of 15 randomly selected auto wrecking yards in northern Utah. The specific objectives were to determine what methods auto wrecking yards were using to keep track of their inventory, to determine the mangers' feelings toward inventory control and improvement of their present systems, and to determine the effectiveness of these systems in providing management information. This information was obtained through a questionnaire interview with managers of the yards sampled. The questionnaire was developed by the author using yards outside the sample area to pilot test and help develop the questionnaire.

In 1891, Utah State University began offering a two-year business course to its students. With this early beginning, Utah State claims the second oldest business school west of the Mississippi River. In 1900, the School of Commerce was organized. It was not until 1956, the beginning year for this study, that the College of Business and Social Studies came into being.

The possibility of developing leading economic indicators of housing starts, on a localized basis, was studied in Tremonton, Utah, for the period from 1958 to 1965. Data on any economic variable which might show a leading relationship to housing starts was gathered and synthesized to ascertain any predicting tendencies.

Several of the variables researched, particularly contracts awarded to Thiokol and Thiokol employment, showed a high positive correlation to housing starts; however, none showed any consistent leading pattern.

An accelerator relationship was found to exist between the average rate of change in Thiokol employment and housing starts. This finding, though not …
