In parallel to the positive trend in terms of the number of trips, unfortunately a decreasing trend is observed in the level of average spending of tourists and one-day visitors. Therefore, total revenue from inbound foreign tourism in 2019 (calculated in PLN) increased by 2.9% compared to its level from the previous year. Tourism, including foreign …

Cost Of Capital For Small Size Tourism Industry In Developing Countries: The Case Of Lodging Sector In Chile, Sergio Zuniga-Jara, Karla Soria-Barreto

Journal of Hospitality Financial Management

This paper provides a simplified approach toward estimating the cost of capital for a small company of the tourism sector. This is accomplished by dividing the hurdle rate into the return of the specific industry in a specific country, and a specific risk premium dependent on the size and age of the company/projects. We illustrate our proposal with investment estimations in lodging accommodations along the northern coast of Chile where tourism represents an important source of income and jobs. The estimations were validated through a survey carried out among entrepreneurs of the sector. The results suggest that our method is …

Analytics-Based Optimization For The Integration Of Drones Into Last-Mile Logistics, Amro M. El-Adle

Doctoral Dissertations

The growing volume and consistency of online ordering has renewed focus on the optimization of logistics and interest in technology-driven supply chain operations. Recent trials have demonstrated the viability of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), known colloquially as drones, in last-mile deliveries. In minimizing delivery times for customers, reducing the load of logistics workers, and reducing congestion and pollution per delivery, the integration of drones into traditional delivery networks presents transformative potential to benefit consumers, firms, and society at large. This dissertation investigates operational and tactical problems that inform routing and assignment decisions for vehicle-drone delivery systems. In three essays …

Becoming A Second Home: The Role Of A Host Destination In The Ism Experience. Case Study: Girona., Karla Romina Quintero, Konstantina Zerva

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

International student mobility is considered among young travelers an opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind experience, making the host destination the perfect scenario where such experiences can take place. Since travelling is strongly associated with students’ mobility, and it is well documented that this concept is related to shaping travelers’ perceptions of self through experiences with other people and places, this case study explores the role of a host destination in the international students’ mobility experience. Thirty-three in-depth semi-structured interviews were performed to international students from different nationalities who have finished a tourism master’s degree program at the University of Girona, …

Visitors’ Willingness To Pay For Interpretive Services In Alberta Parks, Elizabeth A. Halpenny, Mu He

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

Interpretive services provided at protected areas can add value to visitors’ experiences. They can also serve as conservation management tool in mitigating negative behaviours and inspiring pro-environmental action through educational and entertaining content and delivery. With shrinking investment in conservation from public coffers, protected area managers are increasingly forced to charge for specific services such as interpretation. While some research has examined visitor’s willingness to pay park fees, far fewer have examined WTP for interpretation. A sample of 730 visitors to four Alberta, Canada World Heritage sites was used to investigate visitors’ willingness to pay for park interpretation services. In-person …

Future Proofing: Changing Tourism Education To Change Business Practices, Maria Della Lucia Ph.D., Frederic Dimanche Ph.D.

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

Introduction: This paper addresses the TTRA Canada conference sub-theme “Future-Proofing: Learning from Today to Build Back Tomorrow.” The pandemic has accelerated discussion about the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of tourism, social equity, workers’ dignity, as well as the long-term climate crisis. Tourism and the pandemic have led to a series of discussions about whether tourism can indeed be sustainable (e.g., Benjamin et al., 2020). The fact that the tourism industry has been the economic activity that was the most affected by the pandemic feeds this discussion (Della Lucia, Giudici, & Dimanche, 2021) . The sector has shown that it …

Text Mining Approach To Explore Dimensions Of National Parks Visitors’ Experience And Satisfaction Using Online Customer Reviews, Alireza Zolfaghari, Hs Chris Choi

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

Natural parks are gaining global popularity with millions of visits per year. However, studies evaluating park visitors' experiences, satisfaction, and motivations are limited to traditional methods, such as direct observations, spatial analysis using global positioning system (GPS) trackers, interviews, surveys, and focus groups. As an alternative to these conventional methods, user-generated content (UGC) provides available, easily accessible, and consumers' reliable recent experiences with services. This study investigated visitors' reviews of selected Canadian national parks to explore the dimensions of the visitors' quality of experience and the drivers of satisfaction based on online ratings on the Trip Advisor website. The analysis …

Exploring The Effects Of Non-Traditional Narrative Video Ads On Tourism Intentions Among Viewers With And Without Previous Destination Experience., Wayne W. Smith, Esta D. Shah Dr., Robert E. Pitts Dr.

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

Tourism is a storying and narrative experience that weaves multiple accounts about travel destinations, sites, and people into consumer expectations and perceptions of what is authentic in a travel experience (Chronis 2012a, Moscardo 2010, Bruner 2005). Story-telling narratives use the natural link of human experience often shared with others (Zhong et al. 2017, Mossberg 2008, McCabe and Foster 2006) and have become a helpful communication tool for understanding and promoting tourism (Zhong, Yun, Busser, and Baloglu 2017). Story-telling narration provides a valuable framework in which the destination is portrayed as believable and authentic to potential tourists (Kim and Yuon 2017). …

Tourism-Related Climate Change Perspectives: Social Media Conversations About Canada’S Rocky Mountain National Parks, Farshid Mirzaalian, Elizabeth Halpenny

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

This study employed quantitative social media big data analysis in conjunction with qualitative analysis of postings to better comprehend online lay discourse of climatic change issues in a nature-based tourism destination, Jasper National Park, Canada. Such mixed methodological approaches to big data enable tourism researchers to not only study unstructured social media big data for future-proofing purposes but to address some methodological concerns often raised about solely using corpus linguistic or thematic analyzes. This study unearthed divergent themes regarding tourists’ perceptions of climate change upon visiting JNP, with the most significant discourses on climate grief, education and interpretation, pro- environmental …

How Does Shareholder Voting Influence Individual Investors’ Investment Decisions?, Yushi Tian Jul 2021

How Does Shareholder Voting Influence Individual Investors’ Investment Decisions?, Yushi Tian

Doctoral Dissertations

Shareholder voting is an important way for investors to participate in corporate governance. In this study, I examine, as individual investors participate in shareholder voting, whether and how their investment decision is affected by the consistency between their own vote and management’s final decision on the voting issue (i.e., opinion consistency) and whether management’ final decision aligns with the majority or minority of investors (i.e., management position). Using ego-defensiveness theory and majority effect, I predict and find that when investors have stronger opinions on the voting issue, they make more positive investment decisions if management’s final decision on the voting …

He Said, She Said: Investor Reactions To Ceo Gender And Earnings Guidance Disclosure In The Presence Of Shareholder Activism, Scott C. Jackson

Doctoral Dissertations

This study addresses concerns from the SEC and examines the trend of shareholder activism and its impact on financial players. Specifically, I examine how the nature of the shareholder activism (Profitability-focused versus Environmental/Social-focused) interacts with CEO gender to create perceptions of match or mismatch within nonprofessional investors, in terms of perceived ability to address the shareholder activism. Drawing on role-congruity theory, I predict and find that when a perceived match exists, investment willingness is increased, with the greatest differences occurring when the CEO does not disclose earnings guidance information. Given recent trends that show increased disclosure of earnings guidance in …

Uncovering The Gendered Sport Workplace: A Field Study In Men’S Professional Sports, Lauren C. Hindman Jun 2021

Uncovering The Gendered Sport Workplace: A Field Study In Men’S Professional Sports, Lauren C. Hindman

Doctoral Dissertations

Women working in sport management are underrepresented and face sexism and harassment. While previous research has explained such disproportions and discrimination through examining the behaviors of individual men and women, in this dissertation, I instead examined ways in which sport organizations are “gendered;” that is, how ideas and norms about gender are embedded into sport organizations’ structures and social processes in ways that create and reproduce organizational inequalities. Taking a critical approach grounded in gendered organization theory, I conducted an ethnographic study inside the administrative offices of two men’s professional sports teams. Data include 165 hours of field observations, 29 …

Impacts Of Covid-19 On The U.S. Restaurant Industry From The Global Perspective, Seoki Lee, Hyoungju Song, Michael S. Lin, Amit Sharma

Journal of Hospitality Financial Management

The current study explores the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. restaurant industry in terms of its stock performance, and further incorporates a global perspective into this examination by testing both the main and moderating effects of non-U.S. COVID-19 and also the moderating effect of the internationalization strategy of the U.S. restaurant industry. Findings of this study confirm that U.S. COVID-19 had a negative influence on U.S. restaurant firms' stock returns while non-U.S. COVID-19 had a positive impact. Further, the non-U.S. COVID-19 had a positive moderating effect on the relationship between U.S. COVID-19 and restaurant firms' stock returns. Unexpectedly, the …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Rules For The Foodservice System, Amit Sharma Apr 2021

Cost-Benefit Analysis Rules For The Foodservice System, Amit Sharma

Journal of Hospitality Financial Management

Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is an established approach to help make informed decisions. The practical technique has been used extensively in several areas of study, and there is a robust literature on numerous aspects of CBA. While the functional characteristics have been well expounded, the incorporation of CBA into varied disciplinary contexts remains scanty. Foodservice systems can be viewed as an extension of the broader food system. Within food system economics literature, a critical gap remains in the study of behavioral decision-making through the lens of microeconomic approaches. CBA provides a theoretical approach to conduct such inquiries. Two rules in the …

This study examines global and local food policies in United States, Europe, and Asia and discusses possible challenges and gaps for public and food actors, particularly from an economic perspective. In this paper, food policies and regulations are assessed by reviewing global reports, documents, and scholarly journals. The paper emphasizes the possible risks and disjunctions between theory and application of economic food policies in the foodservice industry. Food regulations, inspection challenges, food insecurities, and food safety issues are summarized. Regardless of the level of strict food policies and facilities, unsatisfactory results still exist in developed and developing countries and have …

Factors Impacting Food Away From Home (Fafh) Spending In The United States: A Macroeconomic Perspective, Michael S. Lin, Inhaeng N. Jung, Yidan Huang

Journal of Hospitality Financial Management

In the United States, individuals spend more than half of their food expenditures on food away from home (FAFH), and this trend is growing. This study aims to examine the factors that impact FAFH from a macroeconomic perspective. Macroeconomic and FAFH spending data from January 1997 to February 2020 were obtained from the various databases. The results reveal that the unemployment rate, Consumer Price Index (CPI), stock index, and oil price had a significant negative influence on both nominal and constant FAFH spending percentage, and oil price had a significant positive influence on constant FAFH spending percentage. This study contributes …

Multiple Identities In Sport Fandom: Balance, Conflict, & Negotiation, Aaron Mansfield Apr 2021

Multiple Identities In Sport Fandom: Balance, Conflict, & Negotiation, Aaron Mansfield

Doctoral Dissertations

Simultaneous to the sport industry’s ascent, obesity has become an issue of growing societal concern. Scholars have explored the role of social-psychological identification in both fandom and physical health, but have not yet explored the intersection of the two. Throughout life, individuals must negotiate all of their identities, including their attachment to sport teams, yet understanding of role identity within sport management is limited. Likewise, scholars have noted the need for greater illumination of the relationship between fandom and physical well-being. I address these gaps through three studies. In Study One, I completed semi-structured interviews with individuals who consider both …

Petco Park: Evaluating Economic Health Of The Dining Establishment Industry In The Vicinity Of A Downtown Major League Baseball Stadium, Georgy Shukaylo

Masters Theses

This thesis analyzes the economic health of the dining establishments in

Downtown San Diego, CA, specifically in the vicinity of Petco Park. Opened in

2004, Petco Park is home to the San Diego Padres, a Major League Baseball

franchise. In addition, it serves as a venue for outdoor concerts and shows. The

venue is used for most of the year due to an expanded Major League Baseball

schedule, especially compared to other professional sports. Much of the

transformation of San Diego’s Downtown can be attributed to the late 1990’s East

Village Revitalization Plan, which included municipal anchors like the San …
