Job Satisfaction Through The Lens Of Turnover Intentions And Burnout For Academic Faculty, Amrita Tharappel Thomas May 2022

Job Satisfaction Through The Lens Of Turnover Intentions And Burnout For Academic Faculty, Amrita Tharappel Thomas

Business Administration Dissertations

A recent advice article published by The Chronicle of Higher Education addressed how Tenure and Tenure-Track faculty members are leaving their academic positions at college and universities. Education underwent tremendous change due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as faculty had to transition from in-person lectures and laboratory classes to teaching all classes and lectures in a virtual format and then a hybrid between in-person and online. The changes caused by the Pandemic came swiftly but did not come with ease. My dissertation examines Job Satisfaction through the lens of Turnover Intentions and Burnout for Academic Faculty. I surveyed faculty around the …

Management and Accounting Faculty Scholarship

In an era of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, the deployment of robots in organizations is accelerating. Further, robotic capabilities are expanding to serve a broader range of leadership behaviors related to task accomplishment and relationship support. Despite the increasing use of robots in various roles across different industries, research on human-robot collaboration in the workplace is lagging behind. As such, the current research aims to provide a state-of-the-science review and directions for future work in this underdeveloped area. Drawing on current leadership paradigms, we review human-robot collaboration studies from four academic disciplines with a history of publishing such work …

Shareholder Activism: Does Gender Diversity Among Hedge Fund Managers Affect Activism Returns?, Ankita Agarwal Aug 2020

Shareholder Activism: Does Gender Diversity Among Hedge Fund Managers Affect Activism Returns?, Ankita Agarwal

Business Administration Dissertations

Divergent and often contradictory arguments appear in organizational research on the relationship between gender-diverse top management team and performance. In the present study, I integrate several distinct literatures to test a theoretical model that examines the influence of gender diversity among hedge fund executives on the performance of the target firm. Specifically, I argue that gender diversity among hedge fund executives weaken the performance consequences because females are perceived to possess traits less suited for the leadership position, which in turn influence their performance. I further argue that because of stereotypes gender-diverse hedge funds are perceived negatively and hence are …

Management and Accounting Faculty Scholarship

The large, positive correlation between speaking time and leader emergence is well-established. As such, some authors have argued for a ``babble hypothesis'' of leadership, suggesting that only the quantity of speaking, not its quality, determines leader emergence. However, previous tests of this notion may have been problematic. Some studies have asserted a causal effect of speaking time on leader emergence based on experimental studies, but have limited participant communication, access to reliable information, or both. Other studies have used more ecologically valid designs, but have not always controlled for relevant participant traits or roles, suggesting potential endogeneity effects. Testing the …

Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann Nov 2019

Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

One of the most frequently reported student learning outcomes on college campuses is leadership ability. Thus, identifying the factors associated with leadership development is an important area for research. Previous studies have found mixed results in the relationship between gender and leadership perceptions. The current study proposes that academic self-concept intervenes in the relationship between gender and leadership, and helps to explain these earlier mixed findings. In a study of 597 undergraduate students from a private west coast university, we found that academic self-concept fully mediated the relationship between gender and self-reported leadership ability. Implications for research and practice are …

The Impact We Can Make Through Investment: Securing Financial Freedom By Serving Others, Miles A. Flett Jun 2018

The Impact We Can Make Through Investment: Securing Financial Freedom By Serving Others, Miles A. Flett

Honors Projects

Wage disparity is a major political issue in the United States, but it has far more to do with the health of the economy as a whole. Statistically speaking, it is very difficult for women to participate equally in an economy where they are systematically marginalized. This hurts businesses, it hurts global markets and it damages overall GDP. Statistical data drawn primarily from the Bureau of Labor Statistics underline the differences that women face from various standpoints. Race is a primary influencer, but across the board all women make significantly less than men of the same background for the same …

An Exploration Of Social Class: Its Symbols And Influence On The Selection Process And Career Success, Demetria Faye Henderson Aug 2017

An Exploration Of Social Class: Its Symbols And Influence On The Selection Process And Career Success, Demetria Faye Henderson

Management Dissertations

With a shrinking middle-class population, and an increasing economic divide between the haves and haves not, social class within the United States has become an important topic of conversation in the popular press. Yet, the diversity research in the management literature has largely focused on factors such as race and gender, while the implications of social class for work-related outcomes has remained largely unexplored. In this dissertation, I address this gap by exploring the role of social class in a person’s career across three essays. The first essay is a qualitative study in which I identify the signs and perceptions …

Demographic Characteristics And The Bounds Of Occupational Choice, Cheryl K. M. Mcintosh May 2017

Demographic Characteristics And The Bounds Of Occupational Choice, Cheryl K. M. Mcintosh

Management Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between race, gender, generation, perceptions of discrimination, and socioeconomic status (SES) of origin and the prestige level of occupational choice. This study finds that the prestige level of occupational choice is significantly related to background factors that are outside of the control of the individual. This suggests that the interaction between race, gender, generation, perceptions of discrimination, and SES of origin may shape the choices that people make, potentially calling into question the extent of control that people have over their occupational choices. This is an important addition to the …

Cash Flow Training And Improved Microfinance Outcomes, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Yuthas Jan 2017

Cash Flow Training And Improved Microfinance Outcomes, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite its promise as a powerful tool for alleviating poverty, research suggests that microfinance has had only a modest impact on development. Misallocation of funds by clients has been implicated as a major impediment to microfinance success. In this study, clients received training on how to track (but not manage) their cash flows during the first two meetings of the microfinance loan cycle. Examination of weekly cash flow shows that clients immediately invested the majority of their funds into the businesses and carefully managed revenues and expenditures to maintain sufficient food and other household expenditures throughout the loan cycle. It …

Perception Of African Youth On Personal Computer Utilization: The Case Of Ethiopia And Rwanda, S. Negash Nov 2012

Perception Of African Youth On Personal Computer Utilization: The Case Of Ethiopia And Rwanda, S. Negash

Faculty and Research Publications

The tendency to pursue innovativeness and adopt new technologies has been found more likely with younger individuals and a strong relationship between attitude and personal computer (PC) utilization has been found. However, research in these areas is mainly focused on high-income countries. Do these findings hold for low-income countries? What are the perceptions of African youth on the factors that impact PC use? There is a dearth of micro-level studies that promote understanding about the behavior of individuals in low-income countries. This study looked at demographic data including age, gender, grade level, region, and prior experience among 228 youth from …

Do Consumers With Green Lifestyles Appreciate Green Attitudes Of Low Involvement Products?, B. Florenthal, Priscilla Arling Mar 2010

Do Consumers With Green Lifestyles Appreciate Green Attitudes Of Low Involvement Products?, B. Florenthal, Priscilla Arling

Priscilla Arling

Green products have become popular and have been targeted toward consumers that lead a green lifestyle. Still,
some green products are assumed to be more appealing to this group than others, sometimes based on level of involvement. This study tests a low involvement green product in terms of being appealing to consumers with green lifestyle. Calendars are considered low involvement products. Though calendar purchases are considered impulse buys, recently consumers have looked more for calendars that reflect their personal preferences. Consumers, particularly those with families, typically use more than one calendar (average of 2.5 per person) to satisfy their diverse …

A Comparison Of Traditional And Active Learning Methods: An Empirical Investigation Utilizing A Linear Mixed Model, David Weltman Apr 2008

A Comparison Of Traditional And Active Learning Methods: An Empirical Investigation Utilizing A Linear Mixed Model, David Weltman

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

This research aims to understand what types of learners (business school students) benefit most and what type of learners may not benefit at all from active learning methods. It is hypothesized that different types of students will achieve different levels of proficiency based on the teaching method. Several types of student characteristics are analyzed: grade point average, learning style, age, gender, and ethnicity. Three topics (in the introductory business statistics course) and five instructors covering seven class sections are used with three different experimental teaching methods. Method topic combinations are randomly assigned to class sections so that each student in …

The Existence Of Gender-Specific Promotion Standards In The U.S., Kathy Paulson Gjerde Jan 2002

The Existence Of Gender-Specific Promotion Standards In The U.S., Kathy Paulson Gjerde

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This paper is motivated by the claim that promotion probabilities are lower for women than men. Using data from the 1984 and 1989 National Longitudinal Youth Surveys, this paper tests this claim and two related hypotheses concerning training and ability. It is found that females are less likely to be promoted than males, and females receive less training than males. The relationship between promotion and gender varies across occupations, however, suggesting that the alleged glass ceiling faced by women and other minorities in the workplace is not uniform across all labor markets.
