A Two-Order Effect Model Of It Business Value: Theoretical Development And Empirical Test, Vishnu Vinekar Sep 2007

A Two-Order Effect Model Of It Business Value: Theoretical Development And Empirical Test, Vishnu Vinekar

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

A new model for IT Business Value is proposed and empirically validated from longitudinal panel data. We posit that IT has a first-order effect that includes automating, and a second-order effect that is more dependent on informating. Our empirical results demonstrate that IT's contribution to firm performance is mediated via its impacts on productivity, which corresponds to the first-order effect. We further developed and validated a complex but parsimonious moderated-mediation model to show that these paths to business value from IT vary depending on industry information intensity, environmental dynamism, and environmental munificence.

Empirical Investigation Of The Relationship Of Privacy, Security And Trust With Behavioral Intention To Transact In E-Commerce, Anil Gurung

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

Privacy and security concerns of consumers have been touted as one of the hindrances in the growth of e-commerce. These concerns increase risk perception of consumers. Understanding the consequences of privacy and security concerns, and their relationship to risk perceptions may provide a solution. The relationship between privacy and security is investigated using the Theory of Planned Behavior. The model proposed in this study, investigates the relationship of trust, privacy and security concerns to the risk perception adoption of e-commerce. The results from a field study validate the model.

Determinants Of Knowledge Sharing Behaviors: Developing And Testing An Integrated Theoretical Model, Anitha Chennamaneni Aug 2007

Determinants Of Knowledge Sharing Behaviors: Developing And Testing An Integrated Theoretical Model, Anitha Chennamaneni

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

Knowledge sharing has been identified as the key enabler of knowledge management. To leverage knowledge resources and to support knowledge sharing, organizations are employing knowledge management systems. While knowledge management systems are important, practical implementations have found that technology alone cannot guarantee that knowledge will be shared. The objective of this research study was to examine factors that promote or discourage knowledge sharing behaviors of knowledge workers in the organizational context. Drawing from multiple streams of research including social psychology, organizational learning, knowledge management, information systems and so forth, this research developed an integrated theoretical model and unveiled three sets …

A Typology Of Cluster Concentrations Based On Factor Conditions Of Production And Evolution Of Supply Chain Infrastructures, Pamela J. Zelbst Aug 2007

A Typology Of Cluster Concentrations Based On Factor Conditions Of Production And Evolution Of Supply Chain Infrastructures, Pamela J. Zelbst

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

If the reader would imagine a 500 piece picture puzzle of which only one single piece is available for research, then it is obvious that any conclusions concerning the puzzle as a whole would at the very best be limited to what the researcher could extrapolate from that single piece of the puzzle. This study contends that to comprehend the puzzle it must be viewed as a whole picture, admittedly comprised of different pieces, but nonetheless only accurately understandable in regard to interaction and interconnectivities when viewed from a macro perspective. Accordingly, concentrations should be viewed from a holistic, macro …

Towards A Systemic View Of Organizational Dynamic It Capability: An Empirical Assessment, Anurag Jain Aug 2007

Towards A Systemic View Of Organizational Dynamic It Capability: An Empirical Assessment, Anurag Jain

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

In an increasingly complex world characterized by hyper-competition and turbulence, an organization's ability to sustain its competitive advantages depends not only on how it acquires its capabilities, but also on how it orchestrates the relationships among them. While the resource based view of the firm and the literature on dynamic capabilities have provided strategic insights to the successful deployment and expeditious management of scarce resources, there is very little research on dynamic capabilities from an IT perspective. In particular, there is no common understanding of what the phrase "dynamic IT capability" means or how it can be achieved. This study …

An Empirical Examination Of The Influence Of Information Technology And Trust On Supply Chain Dyad Relationships And Performance, Anil Singh Aug 2007

An Empirical Examination Of The Influence Of Information Technology And Trust On Supply Chain Dyad Relationships And Performance, Anil Singh

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

Reacting to increased competition, companies are adopting inter-organizational information systems (IOS) that share information across the supply chain partners. This sharing requires trust. To better understand the phenomenon of trust between partners, we develop an integrated model of trust in supply chains with theoretical underpinnings of transaction cost economics and environmental factors like Information Technology and Power. The framework also takes into consideration; the association between trust and final outcome measures such as performance and satisfaction through supply chain relationship. By assessing the interconnectedness of trust in inter-organizational information systems, with environmental factors, our research model will help researchers as …

Data Mining (DM) has gained increasing attention in academia and growing importance in business over past decades. This is a study to examine the current status of DM in both research and practice with a focus on the role of statistics for the advancement of the field. Being multi-disciplinary in nature, DM challenges researchers to work together and be aware of the progress made in other fields in order to contribute towards the development of the field. By employing citation analysis techniques and using publicly available citation data, I empirically examine how DM reference fields, such as statistics, machine learning, …

Task Complexity And Effectiveness Of Pair Programming: An Experimental Study, Venugopal Balijepally Aug 2007

Task Complexity And Effectiveness Of Pair Programming: An Experimental Study, Venugopal Balijepally

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

Extreme Programming, which is recently gaining popularity as an alternate software development methodology, involves two programmers working collaboratively to develop software. This study examined the efficacy of pair programming by comparing the effectiveness of collaborating pairs with those of programmers working individually. Student subjects participated in a controlled laboratory experiment. Two factors were manipulated in the experiment: programming task complexity (high vs. low) and programmers working individually vs. in pairs. The performance of programmer pairs was compared with those of the best performer and the second best performer from among nominal pairs. An important finding of the study is that …

Implementation Of Enterprise Information Systems: A Comparative Study Of Enterpise Application Integration (Eai) Vs Enterprise Resource Planning (Erp), Randall W. Brown

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

This dissertation is a two part study which examines and compares two of the most common Enterprise Integration technologies: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI). The first part examines the perceptions of individuals toward each of the technologies. The second part of the study compares and contrasts the two Enterprise Integration technologies with respect to the factors leading to success (or failure). The model determines three levels of factors and is derived from the two-factor motivational studies of Herzberg and Maslow's Hierarch of Needs. In addition, it attempts to discover which groups of factors may be more …

This dissertation empirically explores the role of the lead directorship in the corporate governance system and strives to empirically examine the association between the lead directorship and firm performance. I measure firm performance by three empirical proxies: Tobin's Q, returns on assets (ROA) and stock returns. I explore the research question on the relationship between lead directorship and firm performance in both cross-sectional and inter-temporal contexts. The sample consists of S & P 500 firms from 2001 to 2004 that have all the required financial, stock returns, and other relevant information. Overall, the empirical results of both cross-sectional and inter-temporal …

The Effects Of Religious Fundamentalism On Individual Belonging, Thomas W. Moore Jul 2007

The Effects Of Religious Fundamentalism On Individual Belonging, Thomas W. Moore

Management Dissertations

In the last several years there has been an increase in the interest of religion in the workforce (Mitroff & Denton, 1999; Konz & Ryan, 1999; Mohamed, Wisnieski, Askar, & Syed, 2004; Marques & King, 2005). A number of reasons for this interest, such as the graying of the workforce, increased distrust of upper management, an increase in demand for longer work hours and higher profits, and recent reductions in employee retirement and health care benefits, have been theorized as some of the causes (Burack, 1999; Bell & Taylor, 2001; Mohamed et al, 2004). Although there has been increasing interest …

What Drives Firm-Level Consensus Growth Forecasts? Cash Flow News Or Expected Return News?, Giao X. Nguyen Jul 2007

What Drives Firm-Level Consensus Growth Forecasts? Cash Flow News Or Expected Return News?, Giao X. Nguyen

Business Administration Dissertations

Recent findings in the finance literature document that analysts adjust their growth forecasts in response to major news, proxied by large changes in company stock price. However, Campbell and Shiller (1988) argue that stock prices, themselves, carry two sets of information: news about changes in cash-flow expectation (i.e. cash flow news) and changes in discount rate (i.e. expected return news). The former one directly relates to changes in expectation about the fundamentals of the company while the latter one to the changes in market expectation. Hence, are analysts more concerned about expectation of the permanent movement in the stock price …

Business Administration Dissertations

Academic research in various areas of entrepreneurship has gained momentum over the past three decades. A primary topic of interest has been the characteristics of entrepreneurial organizations, often referred to as the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of the firm. The current study investigates past contributions in this stream of literature, seeking to provide definitive evidence of previously examined relationships. Further, the study analyzes several moderating influences and provides a new model for assessing a firm's EO. A meta-analytic statistical procedure is applied in the empirical portion of this dissertation. The base models of interest are the relationships between EO, innovativeness, proactiveness …

The Pricing And Determinants Of The Discretionary Component Of Employee Stock Option Value, Chii Shyan Kuo May 2007

The Pricing And Determinants Of The Discretionary Component Of Employee Stock Option Value, Chii Shyan Kuo

Accounting Dissertations

In this study, I first re-examine the pricing effect of employee stock option (ESO) value. I find a negative association between ESO value and share price, supporting the view that investors view ESO value as an expense of the firm. Further, I find a negative relation between the nondiscretionary component of ESO value (i.e., the expected ESO value) and stock price; this finding indicates that markets view the full ESO value as well as the nondiscretionary component of ESO value as an expense of the firm. Additionally, I find the discretionary component of ESO value (i.e., the unexpected ESO value) …

A Communication-Centered Approach To Leadership: The Relationship Of Interpersonal Communication Competence To Transformational Leadership And Emotional Intelligence, Marilyn Macik-Frey May 2007

A Communication-Centered Approach To Leadership: The Relationship Of Interpersonal Communication Competence To Transformational Leadership And Emotional Intelligence, Marilyn Macik-Frey

Management Dissertations

Communication is frequently cited as a critical component of leadership. This study takes a significant theoretical departure from that view and embraces the realm of communication as a lens through which we understand leadership. It proposes that leadership is inherently communicative. Communication is viewed as more than a technique or component of leadership, but rather the essence of leadership (Barge, 1994; Hackman & Johnson, 1991; Vickrey, 1995). Communication is almost universally included in the study of leadership (Capowski, 1994; McLean & Weitzel, 1992; Vickrey, 1995), but is not typically viewed as a foundational element or as the central process from …

Sociolinguistic Cues, Perceived Race, And Employment Selection Outcomes: An Exploration Of The Aversive Racism Framework, Faye K. Cocchiara May 2007

Sociolinguistic Cues, Perceived Race, And Employment Selection Outcomes: An Exploration Of The Aversive Racism Framework, Faye K. Cocchiara

Management Dissertations

The limited number of available positions to job candidates has led to increased competitiveness among job seekers and the development of new and more efficient employment screening methods by human resources personnel. As a result, job candidates are likely to participate in a telephone interview at some point during the selection process. It is during these interviews that important perceptions about employment potential are made. A number of factors influence perceptions about the future potential of job candidates. In the absence of face-to-face interaction, decision makers may rely on how candidates sound over the telephone to make judgments about the …

The Effects Of Supervisor-Subordinate Goal Congruence On Performance And Turnover Intentions During Expatriation, Marshall Pattie May 2007

The Effects Of Supervisor-Subordinate Goal Congruence On Performance And Turnover Intentions During Expatriation, Marshall Pattie

Management Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how the quality of the relationship between sending supervisors and expatriates is related to turnover and performance. Utilizing goal congruence and social exchange theories, it is hypothesized that the quality of the relationship between sending supervisors and expatriates mediates goal congruence and the two outcome variables: performance and turnover intentions. Additionally, it is hypothesized that three international factors related to sending supervisors and their business units as well as repatriate plans should be related to goal congruence. The goal examined is the degree to which the expatriation fits into expatriates' career paths at the firm. Regression analysis …

The Change In Financial Analysts' Forecast Attributes For Value And Growth Stocks, Pieter De Jong Apr 2007

The Change In Financial Analysts' Forecast Attributes For Value And Growth Stocks, Pieter De Jong

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations

This research will concentrate on the changes in earnings forecasts, forecast accuracy and forecast dispersion for growth and value stocks after Reg FD. Each topic is presented in a separate essay. The first essay tests if growth and value stock returns respond more to forecasted earnings changes than they do to changes in earnings and whether these stock returns respond in a different fashion before and after Reg FD. This phenomenon is stronger for growth stock portfolio strategies than it is for value stock portfolios. After Reg FD, the overall impact of earnings expectations on stock returns is smaller, especially …

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English Jan 2007

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English

Finance and Real Estate Theses

In 2003 HUD ruled that flipped properties, which are defined as recently acquired properties that have been resold, often within days, and for a substantial profit, are ineligible for FHA insured mortgage financing. This research uses the HUD ruling as the basis for this study. Their ruling was based on the perception that property flipping had a negative effect on home prices among other things. The study uses hedonic modeling to empirically determine if houses that have previously flipped have any influence on value when compared to the non-flipped properties in the same market. Through a regression analysis, it is …

Default Prediction For Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, James Scott Dudley Jan 2007

Default Prediction For Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, James Scott Dudley

Finance and Real Estate Theses

Commercial mortgage default has become a topic of interest for a large number of parties due to the emergence and continued growth of the secondary mortgage market. With the multitude of parties holding a vested interest, it is important to develop a highly efficient method of monitoring collateral performance and ultimately be able to confidently predict or anticipate default. This study shows the correlation between appearance of a loan on a Watchlist and its potential to become delinquent in the future. While testing this hypothesis, a model is created that incorporates several other variables readily used to predict collateral performance …

Mortgage Lending In The Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex: Screening For Racial Bias Using Hmda Data, Seanna Wesson

Finance and Real Estate Theses

This study will look at loan data to screen for potential lending discrimination in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. The data used for screening purposes is the 2003 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) Loan Application Register (LAR). HMDA data does not provide a complete picture of an applicant's creditworthiness. It lacks important information such as an applicant's employment and credit histories. As a result, this study cannot make a conclusive finding of racial bias in mortgage lending in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Area. However, this study can determine if there are any indicators of racial bias that would warrant deeper investigation.
