Differential Effects Of Local Identity And Global Identity On Two Important Aspects Of Consumer Behavior: Price-Quality Judgments And Creativity, Sijie Sun

Marketing Dissertations

Globalization has substantially influenced the world economy and also individuals. As a person with a cross-cultural background, it is fascinating to observe that different identities change individuals’ behavior. My dissertation focuses on cultural psychology and creativity with a specific focus on analyzing the effect of consumers’ local or global identity influences different aspects of consumer decision-making. In the first essay, consumers often rely on price to judge a product’s quality, especially when they do not have sufficient knowledge about attributes. However, how is such a tendency affected by consumers’ local-global identity, product type(e.g., services vs. goods; hedonic vs. utilitarian), and distribution …

Two Timing Work And Home, The Relationship Of Individual Values With Boundary Permeability Preference And Boundary Permeability Behavior, Faezeh Amirkamali Aug 2018

Two Timing Work And Home, The Relationship Of Individual Values With Boundary Permeability Preference And Boundary Permeability Behavior, Faezeh Amirkamali

Management Dissertations

Boundary theory (Ashforth et al., 2000, Clark, 2000; Nippert-Eng, 1996) discusses how individuals build, keep, arrange, and cross the boundaries around work and family domains. However, the process through which people manage boundaries in work and home domains is not well-understood. In this study, I focused on boundary permeability as the key factor that explains how boundaries differ on the integration-segmentation continuum and investigated how people manage the boundaries of home and work domains. I proposed that individual values including achievement, hedonism, stimulation, and tradition are directly and indirectly associated with work-to-home and home-to-work permeability preference through work role identity …

Marketing Ploy Or Strategic Initiative? An Investigation Of Deceptive Advertising, Pamela A. Richardson-Greenfield

Business Administration Dissertations

The number of commercial messages that consumers are exposed to on a daily bases is unknown, although some experts estimate it is at least 500 ads per day. Most pundits in the field of advertising agree that it is ubiquitous. For advertisers and marketers, it is critical for them to create advertising messages that break through the clutter and capture the attention of today’s consumers—who are distracted and overwhelmed. One tactic that practitioners employ to capture consumers’ attention in this challenging environment is deceptive advertising, which exaggerates—or even lies—about the attributes of a promoted product. This dissertation explores this topic …

A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of The Relationship Between Anthropomorphism And Consumers’ Responses: Effects, Mechanism, And Boundary Conditions, Franklin G. Velasco

Marketing Dissertations

Almost one in three brands sold to adults and more than five in six brands sold to children use some form of anthropomorphic representation in promoting their products. Marketers probably hold an inherent belief that anthropomorphism increases consumer preference for their products. Extant research, however, offers no clear evidence to support this. Such mixed findings suggest that this is a prolific and complex problem that could benefit from a synthesis of research on the topic. In response to this call, this dissertation presents two essays applying the meta-analytic approach to understand where the inconsistency comes from and to identify the …

Firm-Specific Information Environment And Analyst Forecast, Wei Hsu May 2018

Firm-Specific Information Environment And Analyst Forecast, Wei Hsu

Accounting Dissertations

I examine how firm-specific private and public information affect analyst forecast revisions. I find that when managers easily beat (struggle to meet) the consensus forecasts in the previous quarter, financial analysts revise their earnings forecasts upward (downward). The revision magnitudes are higher when there is more private information. Similarly, I find that when managers provide upward (downward) earnings guidance, analysts revise their forecasts upward (downward) more when there is more private information. In contrast, the revision magnitudes are lower when there is more public information. Additionally, I find that the magnitudes of analysts’ downward revisions increase with private information prior …

The Role Of Time Horizons In Shaping The Antecedents And Consequences Of Hedge Fund Activism, Anna Obedkova May 2018

The Role Of Time Horizons In Shaping The Antecedents And Consequences Of Hedge Fund Activism, Anna Obedkova

Management Dissertations

While the general stream of shareholder activism literature examines the antecedents and consequences of hedge fund activism, this dissertation investigates this phenomenon from a different angle. I examine the impact of time-related antecedents on the choice of campaigns initiated by hedge fund activists and the consequences of such interventions. To be specific, I study the impact of the shareholder mix, i.e. long-term (dedicated) vs. short-term (transient) ownership, and firm investment horizon on the choice of two most common hedge fund demands: governance changes and business strategy-related changes. Building on prior research, I argue that governance changes are associated with long-term …

Three Essays On Expanded Relationship Marketing, Ashish Kalra

Marketing Dissertations

Customer engagement has become a recent buzzword in marketing and has emerged as a hot topic among practitioners and academics. However, there is no consensus on how to define customer engagement. This has made it difficult for researchers to advance the theory of customer engagement and researchers have been unable to offer any specific managerial insights on how to enhance such behaviors. This dissertation addresses these gaps by systematically reviewing the customer engagement literature, offering a unified framework to advance theory, and subsequently developing managerially driven insights. In the first essay, we adopt relationship marketing theory and service-dominant logic to …
