Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise Sep 1961

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise

Biology ETDs

The Ostracoda (Gk. ostrakon, a shell, and eidos, form) are extremely interesting crustaceans that differ from most crustaceans in possessing strongly calcified, bivalve carapaces, Ostracods occur in great abundance in all types of waters, both marine and non-marine. With the exception of very transient waters, probably as many as 90% or more of the bodies of fresh water in North America contain ostracods. Because the carapaces are easily fossilized, ostracods are abundant in deposits ranging from the Ordovician to the present.

The Hemodynamic Changes In Anesthetized Dogs Subjected To Hypoxia And Cold, Virden A. Dohner Jul 1961

The Hemodynamic Changes In Anesthetized Dogs Subjected To Hypoxia And Cold, Virden A. Dohner

Biology ETDs

The combined effects of hypoxia and cold no doubt were known by the ancients in the areas of the world where there are mountains of considerable height. But the ancients feared the mountains (6) and therefore have left no precise information which might incline one to believe they noted symptoms of physiological significance.

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk Jul 1961

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk

Master's Theses

Studies ware made of the effects of temperature and nutrient levels on salinity optima for growth and sporulation of Chaotomium Globosum and two marine Pyranomycetes, Torpedospora radiata, and Halosphaeriopais sp. Methods of culture and evaluation of sporulation were also investigated.

Discussion focused on ecological implications of data, in particular, on the probable survival value to a marine-fit fungus or a Phoma pattern mechanism-envolving vegetative and reproductive phases. As the seasons progress, the region where concentrations and proportions or salts are most favorable remains similar to that where vitamin requirements are least and biotic factors are most favorable.

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas Jul 1961

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas

Masters Theses

Foreword

Thirty years ago, endocrinology was a laboratory curiosity appreciated by few veterinarians. In those rare instances when the new science escaped from the laboratory and reached the clinic, the endocrine preparations used were extremely crude and often ineffective. In the growth of endocrinology as a science, availability of pure crystalline hormones has played an essential role, and to chemical synthesis must be credited the preparations which make specific endocrine therapy possible today.

In the last two decades endocrinology has come into its own in veterinary medicine, especially in regard to sex endocrinology. But only in the last ten years …

A Study Of The Mitotic Karyotypes Of Five Species Of Culicine Mosquitoes Found In New Mexico, David A. Laycock May 1961

A Study Of The Mitotic Karyotypes Of Five Species Of Culicine Mosquitoes Found In New Mexico, David A. Laycock

Biology ETDs

Karyotypic studies were made of five species of mosquitoes: Culex tarsalis Coquillett, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say, Culiseta incidens (Thomson), Psorophora signipennis (Coquillett), and Aedes dorsalis (Meigen). Slides of tissue from the limb buds were prepared by the squash technique. All five species were found to have a diploid number of six. The study shows that Aedes dorsalis, Psorophora signipennis, and Culiseta incidens have virtually identical mitotic karyotypes, with two pairs of large and one pair of somewhat smaller chromosomes. Culex tarsalis and Culex pipiens quinguefasciatus have karyotypes that contain three sizes of chromosomes. In Culex tarsalis there are obvious size …

Biology ETDs

The purpose of the experiment was to examine the influences of selected auxins upon seedling development post germinal cultures of excised embryos of Pinus ponderosa Laws (ponderosa pine). Seedlings were studied on an agar medium and later in quartz sand with added nutrients.

Mammals Of Mount Taylor, Valencia County, New Mexico, Eugene E. Schroeder May 1961

Mammals Of Mount Taylor, Valencia County, New Mexico, Eugene E. Schroeder

Biology ETDs

During the summer of 1960, three months were spent in making a comprehensive study of the kinds and ecological distribution of native mammals in and above the Transition Zone on Mount Taylor of Valencia County, New Mexico.

Mount Taylor, and old volcanic pile, rises 11,301 feet above sea level. Three boreal life zones, the Transition, Canadian, and Hudsonian were assigned to Mount Taylor.

Small mammals were collected by two sampling methods, quadrant and line trapping. However, mist nets were used for capturing bats. Quadrants were placed in various plant communities for three successive nights. Numbers and kinds of mammals recorded …

Some Aspects Of The Life History Of The Silky Pocket Mouse In New Mexico, Richard B. Forbes May 1961

Some Aspects Of The Life History Of The Silky Pocket Mouse In New Mexico, Richard B. Forbes

Biology ETDs

Pocket mice of the subgenus Perognathus, especially those of the little known species Perognathus flavus Baird, present several interesting ecologic and taxonomic problems. A prerequisite of studies of these problems is a knowledge of extent of individual morphological variation attributable to age. A purpose of his paper is to investigate the relationship of age to size, molt and pelage, reproductive activity, and season in the silky pocket mouse. Another purpose is to analyze the summer food habits of P. flavus as revealed by study of several large series of pocket mice collected during August of 1958.

Geographic Variation Of The Hispid Cotton Rat In New Mexico, A.L. Gennaro May 1961

Geographic Variation Of The Hispid Cotton Rat In New Mexico, A.L. Gennaro

Biology ETDs

A total of 520 cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, was examined to determine the kind and amount of geographic variation of these animals in New Mexico.

The distributional history of Sigmodon hispidus in New Mexico may be revealed by a relationship between color variation of these animals and soil color of areas from which these animals were taken. This relationship suggests, firstly, that Sigmodon hispidus has occupied the southern Rio Grande Valley for a longer period of time than it has areas east of the Rio Grande Valley, and secondly, that Sigmodon hispidus has only recently occupied the Deming Plain. …

The Effects Of Certain Environmental And Biological Factors On Rally Calling In The Chukar Partridge, H. Warrington Williams May 1961

The Effects Of Certain Environmental And Biological Factors On Rally Calling In The Chukar Partridge, H. Warrington Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Naturalists for many years have known that birds sing most at dawn and at dusk, but to which of many physical variables they are responding has not been completely determined. This problem has taken on importance in the field of wildlife management because calling rate has been used as an index of abundance for numerous game birds, namely the Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus (Kimball, 1949); the Mourning Dove, Zenaidura macroura (McClure, 1939); the Bobwhite Quail, Colinus virginianus (Bennitt, 1951; Rosene, 1957): and the Woodcock, Philohela minor (Pitelka, 1943).

Studies On The Relationship Of The Redside Shiner (Richardsonius Balteatus) And The Longnose Sucker (Catostomus Catostomus) To The Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) Popluation In Yellowstone Lake, Kenneth E. Biesinger May 1961

Studies On The Relationship Of The Redside Shiner (Richardsonius Balteatus) And The Longnose Sucker (Catostomus Catostomus) To The Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) Popluation In Yellowstone Lake, Kenneth E. Biesinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Biologists have been concerned about the presence of longnose suckers (Catostomus catostomus) and redside shiners (Richarsonius balteatus)and their effect on the cutthroat trout population in Yellowstone Lake. This investigation was made to determine the distribution and certain interactions of these species with cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake. The effects of the presence of lake chub (Hybopsis plumbea) and longnose dace (Rhinichtys cataractae) are considered to a lesser extent.

The Taxonomy Of A Pentastomid Parasite From An Indian Calotes Versicolor, Shirangam Kuppuswami Krishnaswami Jan 1961

The Taxonomy Of A Pentastomid Parasite From An Indian Calotes Versicolor, Shirangam Kuppuswami Krishnaswami

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Class Pentastomida is ranked under the Phylum Arthropoda by most authors, but its position is questionable in view of its unusual body structure, and probably the group should be regarded as occupying an isolated place among the invertebrates. The members of the Class Pentastomida are endoparasitic in the respiratory passages and lungs of vertebrates. They are veriform with flattened cylindrical annulated body; they are unique in that the body is non-segmented, but the muscles are metamerically arranged and the integument is chitinous with numerous glands. These data alone would justify the argument that they should be assigned an isolated …

A Physiological Comparison Of Isopods In The Transition From A Marine To A Terrestrial Habitat : With Notes On Their Morphology And Behavior, Gary John Brusca Jan 1961

A Physiological Comparison Of Isopods In The Transition From A Marine To A Terrestrial Habitat : With Notes On Their Morphology And Behavior, Gary John Brusca

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is of five species of isopods common to the Dillon Beach area, each of which represents a different level in the transition toward land life. Cirolana harfordi was used as a completely marine form. Idothea (Pentidotea) wosnesenskii represents a step toward land life as it inhabits an area uncovered by most low tides. Ligia occidentalis is found in the splash zone, receiving spray from the action of the surf. This illustrates another, higher, level in the transition. Alloniscus perconvexus was the fourth species studied. It is commonly found burrowed in the sand in the area of the berm, …
