Student Success Of Online Vs. In-Person Biology Courses At Virginia Community Colleges, Jennifer Claire Scott
Student Success Of Online Vs. In-Person Biology Courses At Virginia Community Colleges, Jennifer Claire Scott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Community colleges have a significant role in preparing students for STEM-related careers through certificates, degrees, and transfers to four-year institutions. In addition, online education is a growing mode of higher education, particularly for community college students. However, community college and online students are both at a high risk of attrition and show a lower success rate for degree completion. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in attrition and success between students in online and in-person biology courses at Virginia community colleges. Also, this study addressed downstream effects of online education by examining course completion of second-semester biology …
A Microbiome Analysis Of The Relationship Among Crayfish Ectosymbionts And Their Environment, John Hoverson
A Microbiome Analysis Of The Relationship Among Crayfish Ectosymbionts And Their Environment, John Hoverson
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this project was to determine if there are differences present between the α-diversities of the crayfish microbiome and its surrounding water and sediment. Furthermore, this project sought to discover if these differences hold when microbiomes are evaluated between crayfish of first and second stream orders. Finally, this project sought to determine if the presence of branchiobdellidan ectosymbionts on the crayfish caused further differences in the crayfish microbiome. While the hypothesized patterns between crayfish, ectosymbionts, and stream order were not found to exist, a significantly different microbiome was observed between water, sediment, and crayfish, and the α-diversity of …
Dna Aptamer-Drug Targeting Chemotherapy: Investigation Of Cell Cycle Inhibition Via S15 Aptamer – Norcantharidin Complex, Shannon Fehr
Dna Aptamer-Drug Targeting Chemotherapy: Investigation Of Cell Cycle Inhibition Via S15 Aptamer – Norcantharidin Complex, Shannon Fehr
Senior Honors Theses
Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death in both men and women in the United States (Bray et al., 2018). Cancer treatments are often non-specific and kill many dividing cells within a patient causing unwanted side effects. Norcantharidin (NCTD) is a synthetic FDA approved treatment for cancers including non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). NCTD suppresses cell proliferation by inhibiting cells from exiting the G2 phase of the cell cycle. Aptamers are short single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules with ligand directed self-annealing capabilities allowing selective binding to specific targets. This paper will discuss the hypothesized effects of using …
Investigation Of Undocumented Heart Disease In Cadaveric Donors, Crystal Danae Passburg
Investigation Of Undocumented Heart Disease In Cadaveric Donors, Crystal Danae Passburg
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
For nearly a century, heart disease has been the leading source of death and disease in the United States, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of individuals every year and burdening millions more with diminished health and severe disability. However, despite the significant known prevalence of heart disease, studies suggest that many more individuals—and particularly those within the female and elderly populations—may possess undiagnosed heart disease which remains undetected even after death due to the lack of autopsy examination. In the absence of autopsy, many cases of heart disease may never be identified, resulting in a skewed understanding of …
The Genesis Of Sars-Cov-2 Virus And The Origin Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Alan L. Gillen
The Genesis Of Sars-Cov-2 Virus And The Origin Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Alan L. Gillen

The current outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, fig. 1), causing a respiratory-tract illness, first started in Wuhan, China, and has been escalating worldwide. The official disease name became known as COVID-19 in mid-spring 2020. It shares some characteristics of the SARS virus of 2002–3. Early on, with many cases in Wuhan, China, it was reported that the outbreak had some association with animal markets, which indicated that there was animal-to-person transmission. Like SARS-CoV-1, the suspected animal source of the virus is bats. We have not seen this virus before, and our bodies were not ready for this, nor …
Physiological And Molecular Outcomes Of Chronic Post-Weaning Folate Deficiency, Abigail Joan Lawton
Physiological And Molecular Outcomes Of Chronic Post-Weaning Folate Deficiency, Abigail Joan Lawton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Folate is an essential B vitamin that serves as a primary one-carbon carrier in a number of essential cellular reactions; among these reactions are synthesis of purines, thymidylate, and methionine. As a result of these synthesis reactions, folate plays a key role in regulating nucleic acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, maintenance of DNA stability, and production of S-adenosylmethionine for methylation of nucleic acids, neurotransmitters, phospholipids, histones, and other proteins. As such, folate deficiency is associated with a number of adverse outcomes including various cancers, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive defects. Despite mandatory folate fortification in grains in many developed countries, a …
Possible Roles For Essential Oils In Chemoprevention And Suppression Of Cancer, Chad Kirk Lillestolen
Possible Roles For Essential Oils In Chemoprevention And Suppression Of Cancer, Chad Kirk Lillestolen
Senior Honors Theses
Cancer represents one of the costliest and most prevalent diseases to afflict the modern world, even though treatments have evolved steadily over the years and produce an increasingly positive outlook with each development and innovation. Essential oils have been used medicinally- among other purposes- for thousands of years and have begun to attract attention for possible applications to the field of oncology. Numerous investigations and publications have shed light on the possible chemopreventative (antioxidant and antimetastatic) uses of these oils, alongside cancer suppressive (apoptosis-inducing and cytotoxic) abilities that they may possess. With the high annual incidence of cancer and the …

The immune system is an intelligently made system designed for interaction with microbes even in a perfect world; it is more than a defense. However, in a post-fall world, it is primarily a body’s defense system. Battle imagery is appropriate for describing the interaction with pathogens and parasites. A person’s blood becomes more potent over time as that person prevails and overcomes pathogens and parasites with its newly formed antibodies in high numbers. Antibodies have the secret locked away to defeat the germ that has invaded. The second infection usually has minimal harm; hence, the “wise” blood is more likely …
Range Limitation Of The Peaks Of Otter Salamander (Plethodon Hubrichti) Due To Competition With The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) In Sympatry, Timothy R. Brophy, Norman G. Reichenbach
Range Limitation Of The Peaks Of Otter Salamander (Plethodon Hubrichti) Due To Competition With The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) In Sympatry, Timothy R. Brophy, Norman G. Reichenbach
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Peaks of Otter salamander, Plethodon hubrichti, is a montane species found at altitudes above 442 m within a 117 km2 area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, USA. In areas where this species is sympatric with the eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) it seemed likely that P. hubrichti populations were either depressed or eliminated. The habitability of areas beyond the current range boundaries for P. hubrichti is supported by several disjunct populations in areas sympatric with P. cinereus. From 2009 to 2012 we tested whether P. hubrichti was negatively impacted by competition with P. cinereus by removing …
