We present results from a continuing interferometric survey of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with the Submillimeter Array, including high-resolution (beam size ~2 arcsec) imaging of eight additional AzTEC 1.1 mm selected sources in the COSMOS field, for which we obtain six reliable (peak signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) >5 or peak S/N >4 with multiwavelength counterparts within the beam) and two moderate significance (peak S/N >4) detections. When combined with previous detections, this yields an unbiased sample of millimeter-selected SMGs with complete interferometric follow up. With this sample in hand, we (1) empirically confirm the radio-submillimeter association, (2) examine the submillimeter morphology—including …

We report an overdensity of bright submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the 0.15 deg2 AzTEC/COSMOS survey and a spatial correlation between the SMGs and the optical-IR galaxy density at z≲ 1.1. This portion of the COSMOS field shows a ∼3σ overdensity of robust SMG detections when compared to a background, or ‘blank-field’, population model that is consistent with SMG surveys of fields with no extragalactic bias. The SMG overdensity is most significant in the number of very bright detections (14 sources with measured fluxes S1.1 mm > 6 mJy), which is entirely incompatible with sample variance within our adopted …

We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 4.547 with an estimated LIR = (0.5-2.0) × 1013 L. The spectra, mid-IR, and X-ray properties indicate the bolometric luminosity is dominated by star formation at a rate of >1000 M yr−1. Multiple, spatially separated components are visible in the Lyα line with an observed velocity difference of up to 380 km s−1 and the object morphology indicates a merger. The best-fit spectral energy distribution and spectral line indicators suggest the object is 2-8 Myr old and contains >1010 M …

We have used the Submillimeter Array to image a flux-limited sample of seven submillimeter galaxies, selected by the AzTEC camera on the JCMT at 1.1 mm, in the COSMOS field at 890 μ m with ~2'' resolution. All of the sources—two radio-bright and five radio-dim—are detected as single point sources at high significance (>6 σ), with positions accurate to ~0.2'' that enable counterpart identification at other wavelengths observed with similarly high angular resolution. All seven have IRAC counterparts, but only two have secure counterparts in deep HST ACS imaging. As compared to the two radio-bright sources in the sample, …

We present high-resolution 890 μm images of two 20 mJy submillimeter galaxies, SMM J123711+622212 and MIPS J142824.0+352619, obtained using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Using submillimeter interferometric observations with an angular resolution of 25, the coordinates of these high-redshift sources are determined with an accuracy of 02. The new SMA data on SMM J123711+622212 reveal an unresolved submillimeter source offset to the east by 08 from an optical galaxy found in deep HST images, suggesting either a large galaxy with a dusty central region or an interacting galaxy system. The SMA image of hyperluminous (LFIR = 3.2 × 10 …

We present the multiwavelength identifications for 23 sources in the Canada-UK Deep Submillimeter Survey (CUDSS) 14h field. The identifications have been selected on the basis of radio and near-infrared data, and we argue that, to our observational limits, both are effective at selecting the correct counterparts of the SCUBA sources. We discuss the properties of these identifications and find that they are very red in near-infrared color, with many classified as extremely red objects, and show disturbed morphologies. Using the entire CUDSS catalog of 50 sources, we use a combination of spectroscopic redshifts (four objects), 1.4 GHz : 850 …

A Survey Of 557 Ghz Water Vapor Emission In The Ngc 1333 Molecular Cloud, Ea Bergin, Mj Kaufman, Gj Melnick, Ronald L. Snell, Je Howe

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

Using NASA's Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS), we have examined the production of water in quiescent and shocked molecular gas through a survey of the 556.936 GHz 110-101 transition of ortho-H2O in the NGC 1333 molecular core. These observations reveal broad emission lines associated with the IRAS 2, IRAS 4, IRAS 7, and HH 7-11 outflows. Toward three positions we detect narrow (Δv ~ 2-3 km s-1) emission lines clearly associated with the ambient gas. The SWAS observations, with a resolution of ~4', are supplemented with observations from the Infrared …
