Journalists in the affluent industrialised world have since the mid-80s adopted information and communication technology (hereafter referred to as the internet) as part of their daily work. The internet has also enabled geographically isolated journalists to build an extensive network of contacts and access diverse information sources. Journalists, and citizens alike, are increasingly publishing their work for access by a global audience. This has effectively forced a redefinition of what constitutes professional practice in journalism. Academic Library Seating: A Survey Of Usage, With Implications For Space Utilisation, Michael K. Organ, Margie H. Jantti

Between June and October 1996 the University of Wollongong Library conducted a survey of patron seating usage with the aim of a) quantifying such use; and b) identifying areas where seats could be removed to accommodate the growth of the collection. The survey indicated that maximum usage of the 648 seats available for study was 66%. This supported a conservative reduction of seating numbers by 12%, resulting in minimal impact on patron usage. The removal of seats enabled the installation of additional shelving and a compactus. The findings have facilitated collection expansion for a further five year period.

Basking is common in emydid turtles and is generally accepted to be in thermoregulatory behavior. In 2004, we quantified and described the basking behavior of turtles in the Central Canal of Indianapolis. This canal system runs through an urban landscape that is dominated by fragmented woodlots, residential areas. and commercial areas. We observed that basking turtles exhibited variable basking behavior. with spatial and temporal shins in basking behavior from east-facing banks in the morning to west-facing banks in the afternoon. Turtles in the Central Canal are subject to frequent disturbance, which altered basking behavior. Many turtles forewent aerial basking on …

Carap's attempt to develop an inductive logic has been criticized on a variety of grounds, and while there may be some philosophers who believe that difficulties with Carnap's approach can be overcome by further elaborations and modifications of his system, I think it is fair to say that the consensus is that the approach as a whole cannot succeed. In writing a paper on problems with inductive logic (and with Carnap's approach in particular), I might therefore be accused of beating a dead horse. George Mansour has been booking film in Boston-area movie theaters for 46 years. In the early 1980s, in addition to booking films for more mainstream commercial and art movie houses like the Orson Welles in Cambridge and the Nickelodeon just outside Kenmore Square, Mansour booked films for the South Station Cinema, a gay porn house in Boston. His work for the South Station Cinema, Mansour told The History Project in a recent interview, was the catalyst for what would become the Boston LGBT Film Festival.

Modeling Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan

Philosophers of science increasingly believe that much of science is concerned with understanding the mechanisms responsible for the production of natural phenomena. An adequate understanding of scientific research requires an account of how scientists develop and test models of mechanisms. This paper offers a general account of the nature of mechanical models, discussing the representational relationship that holds between mechanisms and their models as well as the techniques that can be used to test and refine such models. The analysis is supported by study of two competing models of a mechanism of speech perception.

In this journal theme introduction, first, I explain how comparative philosophy as explored in the journal Comparative Philosophy is understood and how it is intrinsically related to the constructive engagement strategy. Second, to characterize more clearly and accurately some related methodological points of the constructive-engagement strategy, and also to explain how constructive engagement is possible, I introduce some needed conceptual and explanatory resources and a meta-methodological framework and endeavor to identify adequacy conditions for methodological guiding principles in comparative studies. This paper summarizes our history with designing coherent real-time processing algorithms within Kyma that enable the spontaneous processing of acoustic instruments using the Capybara-320 and Pacarana synthesis engines in interactive real-time performance. Compositional and performance issues for the current work, System of Shadows, are examined, discussed, and performed during the demonstration, focusing on the composer’s Kyma processing algorithms and the musical score used by both performers. We posit relevant data surrounding the interactive performance issues involved in a complex real-time processing work of this nature, and discuss our collaborative creative process. This study explores the relationship between state-citizen relations and changing notions of volunteering in Japan. I map Japan's state-citizen relations through an analysis of the transformations of volunteering in Japan from “hōshi” (mutual obligation) to "borantia" (borrowed from the English "volunteer"). The article broadly considers these paradigm shifts in terms of the context of the role International Non Profit Organisations (INPOs) play in Japanese foreign policy.

This article traces some of the crossings of the literary, political, moral, and epistemological valences of “narcissism” in the work of literary critic Barbara Johnson, exploring how Johnson implicitly works within and against the view, as expounded by the Practical Criticism and others, of “morality” as a conduit between literature and politics. In contrast, Johnson works to read the differences within moral and epistemological schemas, betraying the pretenses of any moral “stance” without evading the necessity of holding political positions.
