The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson
The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson
Women's and Gender Studies
Previous studies of communication in dialysis centers primarily focused on communication between nurses and patients. In this study, ethnographic methods were used to explore the dominant communication performances enacted by dialysis staff members, including registered nurses, patient care technicians, technical aides, a social worker, and a dietitian. Findings suggest a dialectic between extreme routinization of care and continual adaptation. The dominant routine involved repeating the same preparation, treatment, and discharge process 3 shifts per day, thrice weekly for each patient. At the same time, near-constant adjustments to scheduling, coordination of tasks, and problem solving were needed to maintain the performance …

Felber's book is more than just a close account of the 1897 baseball season: on the way to the September showdown between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Beaneaters, his readers attend what passed for spring training in the 1890s, observe the struggles of the lone umpire on the field, and follow the efforts to open up Sunday baseball by thwarting the Blue Laws.

Impurity And Back Contact Effects On Cdte/Cds Thin Film Solar Cells, Hehong Zhao
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
CdTe/CdS thin film solar cells are the most promising cost-effective solar cells. The goal of this project is to improve the performance for CdS/CdTe devices by improving the open circuit voltage Voc and current density Jsc. Efforts focused on increasing the Voc, which include increasing the doping concentration by introducing Phosphorus and Antimony, finding and testing new back contact materials, and varying the ambient of CSS CdTe. In addition, the effect of Zn2SnO4 on the cells' performance was also studied.
Electrical characterization of the thin films and completed devices were carried out …
Prickled Lilly Perch, Jillian Ludwig
Prickled Lilly Perch, Jillian Ludwig
All Theses
The Prickled Lilly Perch series consist of graphite drawings and designed wallpaper, functioning as a device to mediate and reflect on morality. This work illustrates and investigates the cyclical system of birth, life, and death through multivalent, polar conditions. These opposing implications of birth, life, and death are investigated through concept and form, and can be seen through the visual language of whimsy, fantasy, subtle narration, symbols, decoration, and delicate detailing. Operational tools to suggest birth, life, and death are described through transitioning forms, an implied direction upon the human form, aging of a plant, portals, an irrational use of …

My oil on wooden panel paintings demonstrate a curiosity and fondness for a traditional subject, the human figure, and utilize a representational vocabulary to examine an interest in current modes of interpersonal interaction. The work has evolved in conjunction with an investigation of contemporary figurative painting with the purpose of translating a traditional genre and subject matter into a present context of remediation and digital social networking. The resulting paintings utilize recurrent art historical themes of the isolated figure and the sublime, and also contribute to a contemporary conversation surrounding painting's relationship to new media and photography in the twenty-first …
A Comparison And Contrast Of The History Of Christianity As It Developed In Cappadocia And Armenia During The First Five Centuries Ad, Judy Henzel
All Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine key political, cultural or environmental factors which affected the rise and development of Christianity in two specific regions of eastern Anatolia during the first to fifth centuries AD. Hagiography and chronicle often portray the progress of Christianity as deterministic and providential. However, unique cultural and political elements proved very influential in shaping the success and forms of Christianity in Cappadocia and Armenia, particularly in the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

Isaiah's Burden Prophecies As Spirtual Formulas, Justin Brent Top
Isaiah's Burden Prophecies As Spirtual Formulas, Justin Brent Top
Theses and Dissertations
The Book of Mormon makes it clear that Isaiah's message is of great importance to the modern reader. In order to facilitate modern and personal spiritual application of Isaiah's writings, spiritual "formulas" or principles may be discovered or formulated. These formulas are statements of truth based on the prophet's writings that may be applied in multiple situations and time periods. Such formulas of truth offer valuable insighst across time. These formulas may be understood by analyzing the historical setting of the chapter(s) under review, and through critical examination of the text itself. These formulas provide a solid foundation upon which …

It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion
It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis draws connections between today's network society and the workings of gothic literature in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century. Just as our society is formed and affected by the flow of information, the eighteenth-century culture of sensibility was formed by the merging and flow of scientific "technology" (or new scientific discoveries) and societal norms and rules. Gothic literature was born out of this science-society network, and in many ways embodies the ruptures implicit in it. Although gothic literature is not a network in the same sense as informationalism and the culture of sensibility are, gothic literature works according …

Byu Students' Beliefs About Language Learning And Communicative Language Teaching Activities, Sarah C. Bakker
Byu Students' Beliefs About Language Learning And Communicative Language Teaching Activities, Sarah C. Bakker
Theses and Dissertations
Learner beliefs, which contribute to attitude and motivation, may affect language learning. It is therefore valuable to investigate the malleability of learner beliefs, and to determine whether potentially detrimental beliefs can be ameliorated. This study examines how instruction of the principles of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) affects students' beliefs about classroom activities and their beliefs about language learning in general. The 68 first-year German students at Brigham Young University who participated in this study were asked to rate the effectiveness of three activities typical of communicative language teaching: Dialogue activities, Peer Interview activities, and Information-gap activities. They were also asked …

Synthesis Of Novel Cysteine Peptide Nucleic Acid (Cpna), Mehul J. Ajmera
Synthesis Of Novel Cysteine Peptide Nucleic Acid (Cpna), Mehul J. Ajmera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many diseases are caused due to abnormalities in production of specific protein. Across this protein the conventional lock and key mechanism shows binding at the specific cites of protein. However use of antisense technology can prevent formation of protein. It does so by binding to mRNA and prevents transcription. The structural modifications lead to synthetic molecules with 18-mer units which show significant improvement in binding properties, this gives birth to a new class of oligomers called Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA). We herein report cysteine based PNA called CPNA.
