Asiatic Cholera In Kentucky 1832 To 1873, Nancy Baird May 1972

Asiatic Cholera In Kentucky 1832 To 1873, Nancy Baird

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Asiatic cholera has been called the scourge of the nineteenth century, for it caused the untimely death of millions throughout the world. During its four visits to the United States, unknown thousands of Kentuckians fell victims to the disease. In attempting to prevent the dreaded scourge, Kentuckians became more conscious of the need for cleaner cities, pure water and adequate sewage disposal. Modern waterworks facilities, sewage treatment and disposal facilities have provided the means by which the United States has conquered this scourge of the nineteenth century, for with these facilities cholera is the easiest of all communicable diseases to …

The Minister's Role With The Drug Problem, Roger Dennis Wolff Mar 1972

The Minister's Role With The Drug Problem, Roger Dennis Wolff

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Because of the increasing use of drugs in this country today, the writer has a deep concern for the potential dangers inherent in the problem. On August 21, 1971, the American Broadcasting Company presented on Channel two in Portland, Oregon, "Heroes and Heroin." On the program they quoted President Nixon, as saying, "drug abuse is America's number one enemy." On June 17, 1971, President Nixon asked congress for 155 million dollars to help stem drug abuse. He described drug addiction as having "assumed the dimensions of a national emergency."

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons Feb 1972

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons

Faculty Scholarship

Unlike conventional moral standards and other social rules, laws can be deliberately laid down and changed by specified procedures. It therefore seems reasonable to think of laws as issuing from or adopted by lawmakers who are ordinary human beings. Since laws tell us what must or must not be done, and since there is some temptation to understand all laws on the same pattern, it is natural to think of them as either commands or prohibitions. This is indeed a traditional view.

A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains : A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen

Dissertations and Theses

More than one hundred years have passed since the Chinese laborers first landed in this country in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet their history remains cloudy. This phenomenon is quite understandable if one considers the facts that most of the laborers were illiterate, did not have the ability, and never intended, to speak for themselves. It is true that many scholarly works have been published, but few were written by Chinese historians. As a matter of fact, Chinese scholars are unaware that a small number of their countrymen played a strange, pitiful role in American history. The published works reflect the …

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer Jan 1972

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

So badly wounded that he had to be propped up in a chair to face the firing squad, James Connolly was executed by the British on May 10, 1916 in Dublin's infamous Kilmainham Jail. He had been one of the leaders of the abortive Easter 'Rising against English control of Ireland. This event in itself was sufficient to guarantee him a significant place in Irish history but Connolly had achieved prominence in other activities as well. Besides being a revolutionary nationalist he had been a Marxist and a labor leader, had founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party and had played …
