The Political Character Of Adventist Rhetoric Until The End Of The Civil War, Jeffrey Boyd Smith Dec 1983

The Political Character Of Adventist Rhetoric Until The End Of The Civil War, Jeffrey Boyd Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis attempts to account for the emergence, development, and function of Seventh-day Adventist apocalyptic rhetoric within its social context. As the title indicates, the argument is that the rhetoric was political in character, having been derived from the apocalyptic rhetoric of American "civil religion," which originated in the colonial wars with the French during the eighteenth century. After tracing the formation of Adventist rhetoric from William Miller's preaching of the Second Coming to John N. Andrew's interpretation of the third angel's message found in Revelation 14, the author concludes with an analysis of this rhetoric's influence on Adventist behavior …

Stratigraphy And Geologic History, Bunces Key, Pinellas County, Florida, Douglas E. Crowe Dec 1983

Stratigraphy And Geologic History, Bunces Key, Pinellas County, Florida, Douglas E. Crowe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bunces Key, a narrow, linear, barrier island on the west-central coast of Florida, was founded in 1961. Its growth and development since that time is well documented by aerial photography. Cores taken from the Key and surrounding areas reveal a stratigraphic succession of facies reflecting rapid vertical aggradation. Sedimentation began on a gently sloping platform through the landward migration of large scale bedforms (sand waves) during fair weather periods. Migration of these bedforms ceased when emergence and lack of continued overwash precluded further movement. Vertical accretion to supratidal levels resulted from the continued onshore transport of sediment and subsequent welding …

Women's Sports And Physical Education At The University Of Tennessee: 1899-1939, Adam R. Hornbuckle Dec 1983

Women's Sports And Physical Education At The University Of Tennessee: 1899-1939, Adam R. Hornbuckle

Masters Theses

Sports historians have demonstrated that the early twentieth century, particularly the 1920s and the 1930s, was a period of both increasing and decreasing opportunities of women to participate in skilled and competitive athletics. Most would agree that a philosophy of anti-competition and universal participation as advocated by the Women's Division of the National Amateur Athletic Federation (WDNAAF) steered women's collegiate sports and physical education during the period. However, they disagree over the extent of the application of that philosophy and its effectiveness once put into practice. While examining the development of women's sports and physical education at the University of …

Femininity And Self-Esteem In Professional Women, Shirley Ellen Harper Nov 1983

Femininity And Self-Esteem In Professional Women, Shirley Ellen Harper

Dissertations and Theses

Research in sex-roles has found masculinity and androgyny to be correlated with self-esteem while femininity has a low or negative correlation with self-esteem. Much of the research in this area is based in studies of androgyny. Androgyny is the ability to respond in a feminine or masculine manner, depending on the situation rather than being limited to only feminine or masculine behavior because of sex-role stereotypes. In the research on self-esteem some studies have reported androgynous individuals measure high in self-esteem. Other studies have found that masculine characteristics contribute more to the self-esteem than androgynous characteristics. These results, taken together, …

A Working Model For The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents, Harvey C. Klapstein Oct 1983

A Working Model For The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents, Harvey C. Klapstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

During the last decade, institutional treatment of delinquents has shifted decidedly toward community based programs designed around a family unit model. Throughout the country, various state and local agencies have acquired large, older homes in well-established neighborhoods and turned them into residences for delinquent adolescents. These homes are similar to half-way houses in their size and operation. House parents, usually a young married couple, live in the house and provide supervision for five or ten juveniles. During the day, these residents either go to school or work, and during the evening they engage in various recreational and school related activities. …

Ringers Of Bells And Teachers Of Civilization : The Work Of The California Franciscan Missionaries, 1769-1821, Gilberto Vega Sep 1983

Ringers Of Bells And Teachers Of Civilization : The Work Of The California Franciscan Missionaries, 1769-1821, Gilberto Vega

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1769 Spain took active and decisive actions to settle the vast region of her empire known as California. To accomplish the feat she turned to the willing hands of the Franciscan missionaries. The friars willingly answered their call and through their labors assured Spanish hegemony over the region. Both soldiers and friars had participated in the project but the latter's role has usually been underestimated.

The usual mental picture of the Franciscan monks that settled California is one that belittles their greatness. Such views regard the friars as crude religious fanatics with little education and intelligence, whose only pleasure …

An Edition And Study Of The Old English Seasons For Fasting, Chadwick Buford Hilton Jr. Aug 1983

An Edition And Study Of The Old English Seasons For Fasting, Chadwick Buford Hilton Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an edition and study of the Old English Seasons for Fasting. Seasons in interesting to the student of Old English for several reasons: it is the longest regularly stanzaic poem in OE; its English stand on the Ember fast controversy and its attack on lax priest are atypical of OE verse as is the poem's intended lay audience. The dissertation is in three sections: Chapter I introduces and describes the extant text (ff. 257r-260v, British Library MS. Add. 43703), discusses the school of composition, and provides new support for Wulfstan's influence on the poem, describes the …

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee Aug 1983

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to tell William Campbell's biography, simultaneously examining not only his better known military achievements, but also his contributions as a frontier justice, member of the House of Delegates, and an American patriot. Nearly all documentary evidence concerns Campbell's life after 1770. Thus, the primary object of this paper is his last decade, his period of public prominence. Since Campbell's fame was wrought to a large degree by the events of the American Revolution, a major objective of this thesis is to determine Campbell's impact on that struggle for independence.

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding Aug 1983

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding

Master's Theses

In most of the published histories and memoirs of the city of Richmond there is little or no mention of its post Civil War immigrant population. If any ethnic group is referred to, it is almost invariably either the Germans, the Irish or the Jews, in spite of the fact that it is evident from even the most casual perusal of the Richmond city directory or the telephone directory that there are many city residents whose ancestors were not the traditional Anglo-Saxons, their slaves, or members of the three above mentioned groups.

The Albigensian Heresy And The Gnostic Tradition, John Stine Penman Aug 1983

The Albigensian Heresy And The Gnostic Tradition, John Stine Penman

Masters Theses

That the Albigensian heresy represents a resurgence of early Christian Gnosticism is the thesis of this work. The study defines Gnosticism in terms of its pattern of prevalent characteristics and traces the course of Gnosticism and its emergence as the Albigensianism of the Middle Ages. Using the finding of Hans Soderberg's La Religion des Cathares: Etudes, sur le gnosticisme de la basse antiquite et du moyen age as a point of departure through the analysis of documents discovered since 1949, the study shows that Gnosticism and the Albigensian heresy represent a continued tradition of religious expression as a recognizable alternative …

A Search For The Archetype Of The Greek Gospel Lectionary, Karl Rutz Jul 1983

A Search For The Archetype Of The Greek Gospel Lectionary, Karl Rutz

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The text of the Greek Gospel lectionary has been the object of fairly extensive scholarly research for only the last thirty years. In this period a strange scholarly consensus has come about. Although no one would maintain that the body of manuscript evidence for the Greek New Testament is homogeneous, a rather widespread opinion today is that the Greek Gospel lectionary is textually a unit.

The Conflict Of Krishna And Yahweh As Warrior: A Comparison Of The Conflicts Of Krishna In The Puranas And Of Yahweh As Warrior In The Old Testament, With Special Emphasis On The Themes Of History, And Salvation, And Their Relevance To Human Life, Arockiam Rajaian Jul 1983

The Conflict Of Krishna And Yahweh As Warrior: A Comparison Of The Conflicts Of Krishna In The Puranas And Of Yahweh As Warrior In The Old Testament, With Special Emphasis On The Themes Of History, And Salvation, And Their Relevance To Human Life, Arockiam Rajaian

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The conflicts of Krishna cannot be understood simply as stories or interpreted as isolated events. They have to be understood within the framework of Vaishaava theology as exemplified in the Puranic literature. Viewed from this perspective, one will find that they have profound theological significance. In the Old Testament also we find the motif “Yahweh as Warrior." The question arises whether a comparative study of the conflicts of Krishna and the battles of Yahweh is feasible, and what is the distinctiveness of the Old Testament message. Therefore, an attempt is made in this paper to analyze the conflicts of Krishna …

Some Principles Of Christian Mission To Muslims, James S. D. Langford Jun 1983

Some Principles Of Christian Mission To Muslims, James S. D. Langford

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis is an effort to determine what principles should be formulated in Christian mission to Muslims to lead them to the saving power of Jesus Christ. The subject matter has been divided into two parts: 1) information relevant to theological doctrines and 2) the recommendations or findings.

In the first part in regard to the doctrine of sin, Christianity advocates faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ as the remedy for His believers, while Islam believes that man is good by nature and Allah's remedy is the Quran. Consequently, Muslims do not recognize a- need for salvation in …

Fallen Angels: William Faulkner's Lost Generation, Ron Buchanan May 1983

Fallen Angels: William Faulkner's Lost Generation, Ron Buchanan

Theses & Honors Papers

In his address upon receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 10, 1950, William Faulkner stated that the only topic "worth writing about" is "the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself ."1 Throughout his career, Faulkner attempted to convey this idea; regardless of the actual subject or the characters, this theme weaves itself through the author's works. Even Faulkner's works of the 1920s and early 1930s demonstrate this concern with the psychological and emotional problems of his characters. Among the characters most troubled are the veterans returning home after fighting in Europe during World War I …

Current Eschatology: Militarism Superimposed Upon Daniel?, Janet Lorraine Sedgley May 1983

Current Eschatology: Militarism Superimposed Upon Daniel?, Janet Lorraine Sedgley

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The objective of this study is to look at current eschatological literature in an attempt to determine if it reads militarism back into the book of Daniel.

"Current" is defined to mean books dating from 1960 to the present, 1983. Eschatological is interpreted to mean the doctrine of Christ's second coming. It does not, for the purposes of this project, include the doctrines of death, resurrection or immortality. Militarism is defined as "predominance of the military class or prevalence of their ideals; the spirit which exalts military virtues or ideals: the policy of aggressive military preparedness. " Both the ideals …

There will be a brief summary reflection on the various principles which emerge in the …

Politics In Amos, Miroslaw M. Suski May 1983

Politics In Amos, Miroslaw M. Suski

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One of the characteristics for the end of this twentieth century is a political chaos and a lack of solid foundations. The cry for peace is louder than ever in the past history of human life. Yet, the actions of man and their consequences bring forth only injustice and the oppression of the poor. The "self" of man does not change, even if it functions under different so-called political systems.

Perhaps man's politics or its policies are false or simply they are wrongly executed. It is a repeated mistake, when certain known things are separated from the style and actions …

A Study Of Recent Research On The Concept Of Holy War In The Old Testament, Brian Truog May 1983

A Study Of Recent Research On The Concept Of Holy War In The Old Testament, Brian Truog

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The main purpose of this thesis is to gain a general overview of recent scholarship in the area of Holy War in the Old Testament. Holy War is a "problem" for the Christian for at least two reasons. First, the concept of holy War in the Old Testament is often a major point used in stressing the discontinuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Contrasts are set up between the Old Testament as a book of Law and the New Testament as a book of Gospel. The Old Testament is seen as containing a primitive form of religion …

Secularization And Challenges Which Confront Contemporary Brazilian Lutheranism: Some Insights In The Light Of Boaventura Kloppenburg And Some Lutheran Theologians, Gerhard Grasel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In order to find out some answers to the issues, problems, challenges and questions, the writer of this study chose to study the universal phenomenon of secularization based on many different scholars; the Brazilian culture; Boaventura Kloppenburg's view of secularization, and some responses based on Luther and some Lutheran theologians to the issues which appeared in this study.
