Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman Dec 1978

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman

Art & Art History ETDs

Many of the concepts for my imagery are drawn from an attitude of affirming the decorative in art and a personal choice to further explore those possibilities. Ornamentation can enhance art, not because it is superfluous and not because it can embellish life with beauty, but as in the ornamental arts themselves it can magnify qualities already present in material life and work. In this presentation I present my decorative ideas in art from a contemporary perspective in terms of an art historical context a well as through my individual vision represented by paintings, lithographs, and paper pieces. Both sections …

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa Dec 1978

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa

Art & Art History ETDs

The "picto-reliefs" are a solution for the integration of painting and sculptural elements. This integration is resolved by an abstract format where lines, planes and bands are projected in a constructivist manner. In this paper, an examination is made of the relationships that exist between visual images and "sonorous" images, between visual rhythms and musical relationships, and between color and certain qualities of sound. The bands are a key element in the "picto-reliefs". The bands create a three-dimensional form in the painting, therefore transforming the painting into a relief. The bands also possess ''musical power”, since according to the color …

The American Efforts To Modernize The Egyptian Army Under Khedive Ismail, Robin Joy Love Buxton

From 1869 to 1878 approximately fifty American military officers were invited to Egypt by Khedive Ismail for the purpose of modernizing the Egyptian army. During that time the American officers led by General Charles P. Stone designed a staff system for the Egyptian army and they established a series of technical schools not only for the staff officers but for the rank and file as well. In addition to the reorganization, the American officers led exploratory expeditions into central Africa, they refortified the Egyptian coastline and they built roads and lighthouses. In conjunction with their expeditions, the officers produced numerous …

In the past, this function was performed by the society's religious institutions.Today, as in the past, people who want solutions.to the problems they experience, or who want to gain pathways to possible solutions, look to their religion, their church organization, their clergyman, to their God. An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease Dec 1978

An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to devise a codification of twentieth-century cadential techniques used by some of the major representative composers. It is because Debussy had such a profound impact upon twentieth-century music -·because of his innovations and influences upon this century's composition - that he is included in this paper. His music will serve as the beginning step away from traditional cadence procedures. Twentieth century compositions which are non-tonal and basically tonal will be studied for their non-traditional cadential procedures. Traditional procedures refer to those classical clichés which one expects to hear at cadence points, such as: IV-V-I; …

Christology And The Cleansing Of The Temple: Integrating Biblical And Dogmatic Theology, Gerhard Bode

A biblical, historical approach to the study of Christ is vital. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the integration of dogmatic and biblical theology, specifically demonstrating how the findings of biblical theology can be implemented by dogmatic theology to enhance the understanding of the person and work of Christ.

After the war, Blackmar engaged in a number of unsuccessful partnerships but continued to publish music until his death in 1888. He also established business in New York and San Francisco for brief periods. It was primarily as a Confederate music publisher that A. E. Blackmar made his greatest contribution to American sheet music publishing. …

The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong Nov 1978

The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis deals with neither the meaning of the terms nor with the exegesis of the passages in which these terms are found. Nor shall we attempt to re-interpret or relate what Paul said about "cosmic powers" to the modern thought-forms. The purpose of this work is rather to examine, first of all, the terms employed by Paul to describe the forces of evil in the light of his own Jewish background. We shall not be concerned so much with the question: What does Paul mean? as with the query: Where did Paul get the terms and ideas for what …

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis will examine the significance of the defense system that was a result of the Libyan wars against the Romans, Byzantines, and the Vandals. For economic and strategic reasons these nations were involved in long and bitter wars which lasted over six centuries. The policy of the long distance military expeditions, which was the main instrument of the Romans in subduing the natives in the early Empire, had failed to achieve its goals. Thus, the alternative was to erect a network of roads and forts in strategic spots such as water points, commanding hills, along the caravan routes and …

The Civil War In East Tennessee: A Social, Political, And Economic Study, Charles Faulkner Bryan Jr. Aug 1978

The Civil War In East Tennessee: A Social, Political, And Economic Study, Charles Faulkner Bryan Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

By the mid-nineteenth century, East Tennessee had evolved into an unique Southern region. Divergent patterns of growth, society, politics, and economics marked the eastern counties as distinct from Tennessee's other sections, a situation greatly influenced by the region's geographic isolation. By the eve of the Civil War, the region's people perceived themselves as different from their fellow Tennesseans; and in many ways a deep-seated distrust of the rest of the state was commonplace. Therefore when Governor Isham Harris, backed by overwhelming popular support in Middle and West Tennessee, made moves to withdraw the state from the Union in the spring …

Richmond And The Sturdy Beggar : A Local Study Of Unemployment Relief 1929-1935, Dorothy Herin Brinkley

Master's Theses

While studying the Great Depression's impact on the United States in a graduate se.minar, the period of 1933 and Roosevelt 's New Deal programs for the unemployed appeared to mark a major dividing point in attitude toward public treatment of the unemployed. Searching for a way to investigate this idea, I began a study of Richmond, Virginia, to determine whether Richmond's experience with unemployment during the depression had resulted in any lasting changes in its view of unemployment relief. The method chosen was a chronological study of unemployment relief in Richmond from 1929 to 1935 to accomplish the following purposes: …

However, the author utilizes heretofore overlooked primary materials and presents a different point of view on the Inter~American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace-- the perspective of Ambassador Weddell.

Sing No Sad Songs For Me : A Study Of The Influence Of The Oxford Movement Upon Christina Rossetti As Evidenced In Her Poetry, Debbie J. Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Christina Rossetti was largely influenced by the religious reformation known as the Oxford Movement; this study attempts to record that influence by discussing the etiology and the doctrines of the Movement in relationship to Christina's life and her poetry. A partial biographical study is offered, which relies primarily upon William Rossetti's Memoir to the Poetical Works and The Family Letters of Christina Georgina Rossetti. The …

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz Aug 1978

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz

Theses and Dissertations

This project is a study of selected organ pieces (from the 24 published) of French composer Jehan Alain (1911-1940). Although a catalogue of works of Alain lists 93 titles, the works for organ represent the composer's major field of concentration during the last six years of his life. Alain, who died during World War II at the age of 29, made a significant contribution to the twentieth-century organ repertory despite his short lifetime.

The procedure of study was, first, to examine existing secondary sources--a biography by Bernard Gavoty, and an article on the performance of Alain's organ music by the …
