Effects Of Human Relations Training On The Social, Emotional, And Moral Development Of Students, With Emphasis On Human Relations Training Based Upon Religious Principles, Stephen R. Covey

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of human relations training on 222 students in organizational behavior labs were measured in this study. Eighty students were randomly assigned to one of four sections taught by the same instructor--two traditional sections and two stewardship sections-in a Solomon Four-Group Experimental Design. The two stewardship sections used individualized goal selection and accountability procedures with discussions and readings incorporating religious principles. Four data-gathering instruments were used to measure the social, emotional, and moral development of the students . A one-way analysis of variance on pre- and posttest questionnaires from all 222 students showed no significant differences among any of …

The Bijou Theatre: 1909-1949, Robert A. Ellis

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the history of the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, and to ascertain the importance it had on the community during the first four decades of its existence. The wealth of talent which played on its stage during these forty years of legitimate drama (much of it coming from touring stock companies) make the theatre a landmark within the city of Knoxville.

This study should help further the resolve of the general populace of Knoxville to preserve the Bijou as an important monument to Knoxville's cultural heritage. The renovation of the old …

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe Jul 1976

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes Jul 1976

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes

English Language and Literature ETDs

The dissertation examines contemporary American Indian literature to see how emerging writers interpret the traditional Indian tribal value, reciprocity. While focusing on Southwestern Indian literature, the study views reciprocity as a Pan-Indian value. Defined as interdependence, the dynamics of the web of life, the 'law' that describes the interworkings of relationships, reciprocity is apparent in the treatment of food, kinship, point of view, marriage, space, advice, and prayer ( the key word of each chapter).

In American Indian culture, the web of life is not a static metaphor, but an actual description of what goes on between woman and man, …

The Sound And The Fury: An Archetypal Reading, Theresa Lee Pearson Jul 1976

The Sound And The Fury: An Archetypal Reading, Theresa Lee Pearson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Though The Sound and the Fury has received considerable critical attention since its publication in 1929, certain issues have yet to be resolved. Primary among these are the related issues of the novel's unity and of the possibility of an optimistic theme. The theory of archetypes postulated by C. G. Jung provides a model that helps to solve these problems. Archetypes are patterns of human experience though, as Jung insists, they can never be "reduced to a simple formula." However, one can speak of models that parallel the literary experience. The model that parallels this novel is that of an …

Harvey Ellis As Architect And Draftsman: A Clarification And Re-Evaluation, Ellen Threinen Jul 1976

Harvey Ellis As Architect And Draftsman: A Clarification And Re-Evaluation, Ellen Threinen

Art & Art History ETDs

Harvey Ellis as Architect and Draftsman is first and foremost an attempt to sort out the facts of Harvey Ellis' career. This is necessary because over the years authors have lost the proper perspective on his life and work. Ellis has become known as a genius-has been regarded as the equal of Richardson, Sullivan, and Wright. This attitude has led to the exaggeration of possible events into actual events. Harvey Ellis having been an employee of Richardson and Sullivan is a case in point. Once the perspective of Ellis as a mediocre easily influenced designer, but an excellent draftsman is …

Apollonian And Dionysian Aspects Of Greek And Roman Antiquity In Pablo Picasso's Prints, Griffin Philip Gaddie Jul 1976

Apollonian And Dionysian Aspects Of Greek And Roman Antiquity In Pablo Picasso's Prints, Griffin Philip Gaddie

Art & Art History ETDs

Greco-Roman antiquity strongly influenced Picasso's work--particularly his prints. This influence extends beyond the "classical" aspect of antique culture--called by Nietzsche the Apollonian aspect after Apollo and his attributes of reason, balance, etc.--to include the emotional, bacchanalian aspect as well, which Nietzsche called the Dionysian, after Dionysus, the god most associated with these qualities. Picasso's early training included neo-classic exercises; drawings from plaster copies of antique sculpture, which were to form his first impression of antiquity, and remained an important influence throughout the history of his "antiquarianism," By 1907 however his exposure to non-classical art and to the revolutionary influence of …

The United States Great Britain And The Status Of Thailand (Siam), 1940-1946, Peter Goodwin

History Theses & Dissertations

This paper traces the changes in the attitudes and policies of the United States towards the Southeast Asian country of Thailand during the Second World War. From a position of indifference the United States assumed an active role in the emergence of Thailand as a sovereign nation at the conclusion of the war, encouraging pro-American factions and opposing a traditional power of the area, Great Britain.

The emphasis of the paper is on the different attitudes held by Britain and the United States and the efforts to reconcile them. The British expected recompense by the Thais for allying themselves with …

Four Views Of The Nature And Role Of Women In Sixteenth Century Protestantism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anabaptism, And English Puritanism, Marilyn Fagal Thomsen Jun 1976

Four Views Of The Nature And Role Of Women In Sixteenth Century Protestantism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anabaptism, And English Puritanism, Marilyn Fagal Thomsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Never in its fifteen-hundred year history had the Roman Catholic Church been so shaken as when, in the sixteenth century, a mere handful of men advanced the Scriptural doctrines that were to result in the rise of Protestantism. The sole authority of the Bible, the priesthood of all believers, and righteousness by faith alone rapidly took hold in a large part of Europe, especially in Germany, Switzerland, the Lowlands, and England, where the Lutherans, Calvinists, Anabaptists, and Puritans came to the fore.

Because life in the sixteenth century was so closely tied up with the church, such a revolution was …

The Effectiveness Of The Tarmac Reading Program, Dan G. Wilder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the Problem. It was the problem of this study to determine if educationally-deprived students participating in the TARMAC Diagnostic-Prescriptive Reading Program would show significant differences in reading abilities compared with educationally-deprived students who were not participants in that program. Limitations of the Study. The following limitations were imposed upon the study: 1. Initial grade levels in reading in control and experimental groups were measured by California Achievement Test scores as criteria for defining educationally deprived. 2. The 1975-76 school year was used as the experimental period. 3. The results were limited to one school and forty student participants. …

Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett May 1976

Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett

Dissertations and Theses

At the beginning or the program my work was strongly oriented toward the individual objects used in the paintings and lacked any cohesive means or unification. Collage was used as an attempt for unification but more was still needed. It was not until I let go or observed or preconceived images and allowed the image to develop from the free now or washes and lines that I was able to allow the picture to give ideas back to me. The pictures were now growing from themselves and from the ideas suggested to me, without having to force the image prior …

Grotesque In Dickens, O. James Morgan May 1976

Grotesque In Dickens, O. James Morgan

Senior Scholar Papers

Dickens's use of the grotesque in his novels undergoes a variety of changes. For convenience sake, and to better illustrate the developments of the grotesque, I divide the novels into three separate groups. The first group, the period of experiment, included the novels from Pickwick Papers through Barnaby Rudge; the second group, the period of transition, includes the novels from Martin Chuzzlewit through David Copperfield; and the third, the period of a new vision. included the novels from Bleak House through Edwin Drood. Basically, I see the development of the grotesque involving a change in Dickens's conceptions of society, as …

El Machismo En Mexico Y Tres Novelas De Mariano Azuela, Enrique M. Santamaría May 1976

El Machismo En Mexico Y Tres Novelas De Mariano Azuela, Enrique M. Santamaría

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation surveys what several social thinkers have said about machismo and the manner in which the concept figures in Mariano Azuela's fiction. The word is a modern term, non-existent in Castillian dictionaries, which derives from the word macho. It is applied to certain individuals to describe characteristics of destructive and narcissistic behavior usually accompanied by an exaggerated and false show of force, boldness and masculinity.

Rebuilt, Jim Sagel May 1976

Rebuilt, Jim Sagel

English Language and Literature ETDs

Rebuilt is a collection of free verse, rooted in the cultural traditions of the American Southwest. The sense of magic and the supernatural which runs through the folktales of both the Spanish and Indians of northern New Mexico forms a basis for these poems. This material is not simply lifted from the sources but is altered to shape "rebuilt'' images that attempt to cope with the unreality of the late twentieth century. The thematic concern of these poems centers on frustration, a sense of powerlessness from the most intimate level of personal relationships to a society's guilt over its own …

A Pastor's Guide To Understanding Abortion And Its Theological And Ethical Implications, John Richard Tusant May 1976

A Pastor's Guide To Understanding Abortion And Its Theological And Ethical Implications, John Richard Tusant

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Babies are God's opinion that the world should go on. Babies are also the life-line for humanity. This continuing life-line proposes certain questions concerning the life and the death of babies as the pastor deals with humanity.

God has created man and woman to reproduce and replenish the earth, as seen in Genesis 9:7. However, the issue that faces society and particularly the pastor is, unwanted infants. The issue of unwanted infants has consequences that will govern the father and mother's thoughts and actions for life. Generally, people who question the importance of God's ways in the issue to be …

The West Coast Jesus Movement: 1965-1975, Thomas John Hinderliter May 1976

The West Coast Jesus Movement: 1965-1975, Thomas John Hinderliter

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In the mid 1960 1 s, a new and unique phenomenon began to hit the religious establishment in America. Hippies, drug addicts, and the restless youth of America began converting to Christianity in unprecedented numbers. The new Christians became known variously as Jesus freaks, Jesus people, and street Christians. The developing movement became known as the Jesus revolution or the Jesus movement.

It is the purpose of this study to trace the development of the Jesus movement on the West Coast from 1965 to 1975.
